Allies of South Sudan's arrested vice president denounce weapons ban - Africa
The army demand came amid fears of renewed fighting in the conflict-wracked country following the March 26 arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar, a longtime rival to President Salva Kiir.
Along with the weapons ban, the army also told Riek Machar's SPLA-IO forces to report to government offices or barracks "to resume their normal duties", according to a SPLA-IO statement.
"This is completely a misplaced assumption of command by the SSPDF," it said, using the army's official abbreviation, ordering "all its forces and armed civilians in its controlled areas to remain armed and vigilant".
Riek Machar and Salva Kiir entered a power-sharing deal in 2018 that has gradually unravelled, risking a return of the civil war that killed around 400,000 people in the African nation.
More than 20 of the vice president's political and military allies have been arrested since February, with some held incommunicado.
South Sudan has been bedevilled by instability and insecurity since it independence in 2011. The country has remained impoverished despite its natural resource wealth.
African Union mediators arrived last week in Juba for talks with Salva Kiir, according to the South Sudanese presidency.

Chad opposition leader sentenced to 20 years for inciting violence - Africa
Chad's criminal court on Saturday sentenced Success Masra, the country's former prime minister and opposition leader, to 20 years in prison after convictions on charges including incitement to hatred and revolt and complicity to murder. The charges stemmed from a deadly clash between herders and farmers in May. Masra was also fined 1 billion CFA francs, or almost $1.8 million. Before leaving the courtroom, Masra gave a message to his supporters: 'Stand firm.' Following the verdict Kadjilembay Francis, Masra's lawyer, told reporters: 'He has just been subjected to ignominy and unworthy humiliation.' He said he will appeal the sentence. Masra and 67 co-defendants, mostly people from the same Ngambaye ethnic group, have been on trial accused of causing a clash between herders and farmers in May in Logone Occidental in the southwest of the central African country. The fighting left 35 people dead and six others injured. He has denied the charges against him. Masra, who was prime minister between January and May last year, is the head of the Les Transformateurs party and has been a sharp critic of Mahamat Déby, Chad's current president. Déby took power in 2021 after his father Idriss Déby Itno was killed while fighting rebels in the country's north. He had ruled the country for 30 years. Déby legitimized his presidency with an election earlier this year, which was opposed by Masra and his party. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

African Union Stresses Rights-Based Approach to Justice for Africans
By Ahmad El-Assasy Ambassador Amr Aljowaily, Director of the Citizens and Diaspora Organizations Directorate (CIDO) at the African Union Commission, stressed that a rights-based approach is a fundamental pillar for achieving international justice and reparations for Africans. He made the remarks during the High-Level Dialogue on Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance held in Accra, Ghana, within the framework of the African Union's 2025 Theme of the Year activities. Aljowaily noted that the African Union Executive Council's ministerial meeting, held last July in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, formally approved the terms of reference for two key mechanisms tasked with implementing the Theme of the Year: the 'Committee of Experts on Reparations' and the 'Reference Group of Legal Experts.' These mechanisms will work to develop a unified African position on reparations to be presented in all relevant international forums. He added that international human rights instruments will serve as an important reference for the two African mechanisms in safeguarding the rights of African peoples and those of African descent, as well as in achieving justice and reparations for crimes of colonialism, apartheid, and the transatlantic slave trade in parliamentary and international platforms. The CIDO Director concluded his remarks by noting that both mechanisms are expected to begin work in the final quarter of this year, preparing a preliminary report to be presented at the upcoming African Union Summit in February. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
