The last eight games have been a dream for the New York Yankees, but there's one bad moment that sticks out from that stretch.
It wasn't the one loss the Yankees had against the Minnesota Twins before rattling off five wins in a row. It was Saturday's putrid start for All-Star pitcher Max Fried, who allowed seven earned runs to the St. Louis Cardinals, including two home runs.
Fried somehow got the win in that outing, but his ERA ballooned to over three for the first time since his first appearance. As recently as June 25, Fried's ERA was 1.92; it's now risen to 3.26.

(Photo by)As the Yankees get set to begin a critical four-game series with the Boston Red Sox that will unofficially kick off the stretch run, insider Chris Kirschner of The Athletic gave the opinion that Fried's slump is the most pressing issue facing New York these days.
"In my view, Fried's struggles are the biggest concern for the Yankees. He has a 6.80 ERA in his past eight starts, and there haven't been many positives in those outings," wrote Kirschner.
"Throughout this stretch, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has frequently said that it's been more of a command problem than a stuff problem. He's right."
In what could be a classic good news, bad news scenario, Kirschner also hinted that Fried's left index finger blister, which caused him to leave a start against the Chicago Cubs in July, could be contributing to his struggles.
"The Yankees have been adamant that Fried's blister has nothing to do with his struggles. However, his second-most used pitch against righties, his curveball, has seen a drop in Stuff+," Kirschner wrote.
"Before July 1, Fried's curveball had a 120 Stuff+, but it has decreased to 111 since. Notably, his curveball has graded slightly better in Location+ since July 1. The drop in stuff has coincided with an increase in opponent slugging percentage, going from a .321 before July 1 to a .409 slugging percentage after."
Fried is scheduled take on the Red Sox for the second time this season on Friday night at Yankee Stadium. Boston has a different look now; gone is Rafael Devers, who homered off Fried in June, but star rookie Roman Anthony and third baseman Alex Bregman, who was injured for six weeks, present tough new challenges.

Astros add Craig Kimbrel to address beleaguered bullpen

Craig Kimbrel has his latest MLB home, courtesy of a rough month for the Houston Astros. The Astros are signing the veteran closer straight to their big-league team, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The right-hander is reportedly on his way to Baltimore, where he'll join the team as it plays a four-game series against the Orioles this week. At 37 years old, Kimbrel is far removed from his days as one of the most dominant relievers in baseball. He remains fifth on the MLB all-time saves list, but only holds a 4.00 ERA over the past four seasons, a span of time in which his laborious and inconsistent performances have soured multiple fanbases on him. After particularly bad season with the Orioles last year, Kimbrel only managed to land a minor-league deal in a reunion with the Atlanta Braves for 2025. He failed to make the MLB team out of spring training, didn't get called up until the start of June and was designated for assignment after a single scoreless appearance. He later landed with the Texas Rangers, but was released Thursday after 24 appearances with their Triple-A Round Rock team. He posted a 3.86 ERA while in the Rangers organization. He could still be an upgrade for the Astros given how they've performed lately. The team ranks 27th in bullpen ERA over the past 30 days and will be without closer Josh Hader until around the end of the regular season. After leading the AL West by as many as seven games, Houston were 14-23 since July 7 entering Thursday and is currently attempting to keep the Seattle Mariners at bay.

Red Sox Discussing Massive Move to Send All-Star Starter to Bullpen: Report

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox, who kicked off a critical four-game series with their archrival New York Yankees with postseason implications Thursday, are discussing moving a two-time All-Star starter to their bullpen. According to Chris Cotillo of Walker Buehler is not guaranteed to make his next scheduled start Monday in Baltimore. More news: Red Sox to Promote Top Prospect After Scorching Start at Triple-A: Report It would be Buehler's second start against the Orioles in less than a week, a tough task for any pitcher. Wednesday in Boston, he allowed four hits, four walks, and two runs in four innings against the Orioles. Baltimore held on to win 4-3 in 11 innings. Although Baseball Reference pegged Boston's odds of making the postseason at 88 percent Thursday morning, that could easily change by Monday. And manager Alex Cora might be wise to reconsider the best role for Buehler, who's 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA in his first season since signing a one-year, $21.05 million contract with the Red Sox last winter — at least temporarily. Promising Steelers CB is in Major Jeopardy of Losing Roster Spot

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cory Trice is a promising player, but he just can't stay healthy. Trice has missed the first two preseason games with a hamstring injury that was suffered on Aug. 1 during the Friday Night Lights practice. With Trice missing this much time, it will not be surprising if he gets cut at the end of this month. 'The guy is an NFL corner. He can play in this league. It's just a matter of him being available,' Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Monday. Trice has been snake-bitten by the injury bug his entire playing career. His size and physicality make him an attractive dime backer or potential tight end eraser if he can stay on the field. The problem is that there's not much evidence that he can do that, as unfortunate as it is. Once he was finally healthy enough to suit up, he was baptized by fire against the Bengals' star receivers in the regular season finale. The team's seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Purdue, Trice missed his entire rookie season with an ACL injury. He played in just six games in 2024, missing 11 games due to a hamstring injury that occurred while covering a punt against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 22. Trice was on injured reserve for a significant portion of the season. Trice has been a player with high hopes from the Steelers, despite being a seventh-round draft pick and has been considered by some a potential future starter. 'Just mentally, I'm just in a way better space with the knowledge I've been getting, I've been learning so many things from all the guys previously, like D-Jack and Pat P, and now I got Slay,' Trice said during the first week of training camp. 'I've just been learning so much, and I already know my talent gonna show.' Trice revealed that he trained with All-Pro outside linebacker T.J. Watt this offseason. The two have formed a close bond over the years. Watt even gave Trice a shoutout during his first press conference this year and last year in Week 2 when Trice had a clutch red zone interception. With mentors like Watt, Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey, Trice is hoping to take that next step and have a breakout year in 2025. Unfortunately, that might not come to fruition in Pittsburgh due his inability to stay healthy. Alan Saunders provided reporting from Pittsburgh.
