Disney's grandchildren divided over new animatronic of Walt as one calls it 'dehumanizing'

Yahoo2 days ago

Disney's Imagineers are working on a new animatronic of iconic American visionary Walt Disney, but some members of his family have opposing views about whether it celebrates his legacy or dehumanizes him.
Disney's Main Street Opera House plans to unveil a new theme park attraction called Walt Disney – A Magical Life, featuring an audio-animatronic of the company's founder.
But Joanna Miller, one of Disney's grandchildren, slammed the idea of an animatronic as "dehumanizing" in a viral Facebook post. Among her claims, she suggested that her grandfather had told early Imagineer Sam McKim he never wanted to be commemorated with an animatronic. She went on to speak to the Los Angeles Times about why she believes it goes against her grandfather's wishes.
Shortly after she wrote her post, she met with Disney CEO Bob Iger and Disney Imagineers to see the animatronic in production, crediting the current company head as being "very kind" and noting he listened to what she had to say. The robot itself, however, left her cold.

"I think I started crying," Miller told the L.A. Times. "It didn't look like him, to me."

She wrote in a separate letter to Iger, "I strongly feel the last two minutes with the robot will do much more harm than good to Grampa's legacy," and worried people "will remember the robot, and not the man."
As for claims that Disney would not have wanted to be commemorated as an animatronic, Imagineer Jeff Shaver-Moskowitz said, "In all our research, we never found any documentation of Walt saying that. We know that it's anecdotal and we can't speak to what was told to people in private."
After Miller's comments were published, The Walt Disney Family Museum shared a statement with Fox News Digital indicating other family members feel far more positively about the animatronic of the Disney family patriarch and were included in the process of its production.
"Walt Disney Imagineering invited museum Board members—five of Walt Disney's grandchildren and three of his great-grandchildren—to view the progress of the attraction's development, which included a preview of the new Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt in its animated form," the statement said.
"As part of their meticulous eVorts to produce a historically accurate likeness, Walt Disney Imagineering also reached out to the team at The Walt Disney Family Museum for guidance in identifying items that Walt Disney regularly wore," it added.
Chris Miller, Disney's eldest grandson and a member of the museum's Board of Directors, said in the release, "I watched the show with my sisters Tammy and Jenny and the Imagineering team welcomed our feedback."
He added further, "The level of innovation and technological advancement has exceeded anything that has been seen before in Audio-Animatronics. While our family has our own memories of Walt as our grampa, we left the presentation feeling confident that he will be depicted in the show as the public remembers him from his introductions on the "Disneyland and Wonderful World of Color TV" series."

Tamara Miller, Disney's granddaughter and vice president of the museum's Board of Directors, offered similar praise.
"It was an honor to be welcomed by Imagineering to preview the 'Walt Disney – A Magical Life' attraction. Having this representation at the park that grampa built is the right place for this, to educate people about who he was and introduce him to new audiences," she said in the release. "This attraction is a great opportunity for an audience to get a good representation of him. We believe that our grandfather would have been enthusiastic about the project. I look forward to having my children and grandchildren see this representation of my grandfather."

Jared Leto Responds To Sexual Misconduct Allegations

This story contains discussion of sexual misconduct. Jared Leto is responding to allegations, including several claims of sexual misconduct, from multiple women. Earlier today, Air Mail published a story that included interviews with nine women who claimed that the actor and musician had behaved inappropriately towards them. Some women alleged that the incidents took place while they were underage, and one anonymously claimed that 'It's been an open secret for a long time." The reporting accuses Jared of, among other things, allegedly appearing nude in front of model Laura La Rue when she was 17 years old, and allegedly exposing himself and masturbating in front of an 18-year-old before placing their hand "on him." In a statement to Air Mail, Jared's rep "expressly" denied the allegations in the story. They also directly addressed Laura's allegation, claiming that hers and Jared's "communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate" and that she "later applied to work as Mr. Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions." In the story, Laura denied having ever applied to work for him. In response to another accuser's allegation that he would call her in the middle of the night and didn't "know if he was on drugs," Jared's rep claimed that the actor 'has not had a drink or used drugs in over 35 years.' The rep also told the publication that 'there was never any recruiting, complaints or impropriety" in response to allegations that Jared had hosted parties with the intent for young women to go skinny-dipping. The publication also reported that these allegations against Jared surfaced after DJ Allie Teilz reposted a Facebook status from 2012 on IG, alleging that she was "assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17." Jared's reps say that her "allegations are demonstrably false." You can read the entire report containing the allegations that Jared is denying here.

Why You Should Plan Your 2025 Disneyland 70th Anniversary Trip in This Specific Window

Disneyland's 70th anniversary celebration is currently underway, and there are a ton of exciting new offerings available! Around every turn, you'll find colorful decor, an abundance of entertainment, special foods, and other magical details throughout the parks. The celebration runs from May 2025 to summer 2026, leaving a pretty big range of time to visit and enjoy the offerings. However, there is one specific window of time that you may want to consider as you're deciding when to visit, especially if you're a big Disneyland history buff! There is a set of new 70th anniversary additions that are opening slightly later this summer, including a new attraction! There is a small window of time in 2025 when you can visit and experience new additions with the full 70th anniversary entertainment, decor, etc., before the seasonal celebrations begin. We'll break down everything you need to know… READ MORE – On Disneyland's actual anniversary date of July 17, 2025, there will be three offerings debuting at Disneyland Park. The most major of these will be a new show featuring the first-ever Walt Disney animatronic called "Walt Disney – A Magical Life' debuting at the Main Street Opera House. The show will tell the story of Walt Disney's life through remastered footage and audio recordings, and at the end, we will see the Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney in his office. Mickey Visit founder Gavin recently visited Imagineering to learn more about this Audio-Animatronic Walt Disney figure and why they are choosing to create it now. Disney says that this will be their 'most lifelike audio-animatronic ever.' This will be a super exciting new addition and a good reason to plan your trip after this date, so you can enjoy this and the rest of the 70th anniversary offerings before the seasonal celebrations begin (see more on this below, including the specific window!) Also debuting on July 17 will be a new gallery experience in the Main Street Opera House, called "Evolution of a Dream," which will feature images, art, and artifacts that show Disneyland before, during, and after Walt's dream became a reality. There will be another special exhibit in the lobby highlighting Audio-Animatronics technology, including Walt's inspiration and how the technology has evolved over time. There will be certain items on loan from The Walt Disney Family Museum, including original items from Walt Disney's private apartment, that have never been publicly exhibited before at Disneyland Park. And last but certainly not least, there will be a third verse added to 'it's a small world' in honor of Disney Legend Richard Sherman on July 17. This verse was Richard Sherman's final Disney contribution. You can read the lyrics of this third verse in our separate article here. This beautiful new verse and the debut of the Walt Disney Audio-Animatronics figure are doubtlessly going to have quite an emotional impact on Disneyland fans. These are all very fitting additions for Disneyland's actual 70th anniversary date. If you want to visit with the full 70th anniversary atmosphere and offerings before the seasonal celebrations kick off at Disneyland, then you'll technically want to visit between July 17 and August 21 this year. We say 'technically' because you'll want to actually visit a few days sooner than August 21 if you want to experience all of the 70th anniversary decor in its full glory, as this is when they'll start putting the Halloween decor up in preparation for the celebration's start date on the 22nd. The 70th anniversary decor will return in full force after the seasonal celebrations end, but this won't be until the holiday celebration ends in January 2026. You can see our guides to Disneyland at Halloween and Disneyland at Christmas for an overview of the offerings and dates of these celebrations. When the seasonal celebrations kick off, we are assuming that the majority of the 70th anniversary decor will be taken down and replaced by Halloween decor. We will likely see some of the 70th anniversary decor remain in places like the castle, esplanade sculpture, etc. For both celebrations, certain entertainment offerings will temporarily pause for seasonal entertainment. For example, Paint the Night will continue throughout the year, but Wondrous Journeys will need to pause for the Halloween and Christmas nighttime spectaculars. Meanwhile, the Disneyland 70th foods and other smaller offerings like the MagicBand+ interaction points and Key to Disneyland scavenger hunt will likely be unaffected by the seasonal celebrations. See our ranking of all of the Disneyland 70th anniversary offerings here. If you want to visit in 2025 with all of the 70th anniversary offerings, including the new show and 'it's a small world' verse, then this window from July 17 to August 21 is the time to do it! READ MORE – There are a few key things to consider for a visit in July! In our Mickey Visit Disneyland crowd calendar, we project that there will be average crowds throughout most of the month, with the exception of weekends. You can also enjoy longer days and expanded hours of operation during this month, which is key for fitting in all of the Disneyland 70th anniversary entertainment. Unfortunately, one downside is that the weather is going to be hot. There are some good ways to stay cool that you'll want to read about in our tips for navigating summer at Disneyland, but you'll definitely want to have a plan for beating the heat! Jared Leto Denies Report of Inappropriate Sexual Conduct Allegations by 9 Women

Nine women have accused Leto of inappropriate conduct in an exposé published by Air Mail, including a strong denial from unnamed reps for the actor and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman. Some of the women noted in the Graydon Carter-backed weekly newsletter's Saturday report say they were underage when the actor allegedly engaged in sexually charged conversations or made forceful advances on them. U.S.-based spokespeople for Leto did not immediately return messages seeking comment. Rumors about Leto's behavior toward young and underage women go back to at least 2005, when the New York Post published a story that began, 'Jared Leto likes 'em young.' The actor was allegedly caught hitting on teen models staying at the Maritime Hotel. One woman Clavarino spoke to said Leto asked for her number when she was 16. He called her days later. 'I don't know if he was on drugs or what … It was the weirdest, grossest voice … [But] for me, it's Jared, you know? … And the conversations turned sexual. He'd ask things like, 'Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever [expletives]?' Model Laura La Rue also said she had a similar experience with Leto when she was 16. 'He asked how old I was. I said, 'I'm 16. How old are you?' she explained. Leto was then 36. A third woman explained she was 20 when she met Leto while out. 'We ended up hooking up a little at the club,' she told the outlet, and 'hung out a few times at his house, but he was weird. Look, I know some people are kinky, and that's fine. But his kind of kink — it just didn't feel right.' The actor also allegedly threw parties in 2007 and 2008 and 'recruited' young women to attend. 'I was 18 the first time I went, and I was definitely not the youngest person there,' a woman told Clavarino. 'The energy was all about getting the girls in the pool.' In May Los Angeles-based DJ Allie Teilz shared a Facebook status from 2012 in her Instagram Stories. 'Youre [sic] not really in L.A. until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage … In a kilt … And a snow hat,' she wrote more than a decade ago. 'I was assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17,' she wrote in another Instagram story. 'He knew my age and didn't care. What he did was predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.' 'Throwback to 2012, Jared Leto was a creep then … still a creep now, going on 15+ years of being Hollywood's most persistent predator in a kilt.' And another: '29+ years of being a pedophile. when does this end? protect our girls #jaredleto,' she also wrote. 'Let me be clear,' Teilz wrote in another Instagram story. 'What he's done is not OK: the sheer volume of these cases—and how young some of these girls were, just 14, 15, 16—breaks my heart.' Read the entire report at Air Mail.
