722 Tok Nan tribute gathering cancelled amid ‘restrictive' conditions by MBKS
KUCHING (July 12): The organising committee behind the proposed July 22 gathering to honour Sarawak Independence Day and pay tribute to the late Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem (Tok Nan) has announced the cancellation of the event, despite receiving a permit to proceed at Song Kheng Hai ground here, on Friday.
The event organising chairman Peter John Jaban said, in a statement today, that there was no longer any point in holding the event due to the restrictive conditions imposed by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), and the last-minute approval which came only after organisers raised concerns in the media about the delayed response.
'The approval letter was issued at the eleventh hour, with conditions that are both restrictive and unreasonable, including a ban on the symbolic release of pigeons, which traditionally represents freedom and unity, and a prohibition on vehicle shows, despite months of preparation by various local communities,' he said.
Peter described the terms as 'tyrannical', claiming they contravened democratic norms and the principles of freedom of expression.
'We are sad to cancel what was meant to be a community-driven initiative. This event was organised by the community, for the community. No public funds were used — it was entirely powered by volunteers, private sponsorships, and passionate Sarawakians who wanted to celebrate their shared heritage, free from political or institutional agendas,' he said.
He added that after submitting the permit application on April 7, 2025, organisers continued with three months of preparation.
However, the official approval, which arrived only on the evening of July 11 and was not even signed by the mayor, left with them insufficient time to execute the event properly.
'We wish the various councils the best of luck with their alternate programmes, such as the Unity Walk being organised this year by MBKS.
'We thank all our contributors — the big bikers, classic car enthusiasts, as well as the Kancil and sports car communities — who were looking forward to participating,' he said.
Peter also expressed regret to those who had made long-distance travel plans, including motorhome travellers from Limbang and cultural troupes from rural villages.
'Unfortunately, the onerous conditions imposed by MBKS would have precluded them from taking part. We offer our heartfelt apologies to every supporter who believed in this people's movement,' he said.
Peter also thanked the cultural troupes and performers, including villagers from across Sarawak, who had committed their time, energy, and resources to participate.
'We also applaud the efforts of the three councils in marking the occasion this year, their first time doing so, although we are saddened by the lack of engagement during the planning of their event.
'Nevertheless, we remain open to constructive and timely discussions for this and future events, to ensure continued community representation in the spirit of this celebration,' he added.
Peter also acknowledged the Unity Walk as an excellent way to bring the people together and pay tribute to the late Tok Nan, a leader who declared July 22 as a public holiday and stood for Sarawak's autonomy, unity, and pride.
'This was never about politics. It was about pride. It was about the community and the people of Sarawak,' he added.
'It was also about Sarawak First. Though this event is now cancelled, our spirit as Anak Sarawak remains strong. We will continue to pursue inclusive, respectful, and community-led efforts to honour our heritage.' 722 gathering MBKS Peter John

S'wak DAP Youth tells critics to stop blaming Putrajaya for legacy failures
Sarawak DAP Youth pushed back against criticism of the federal government's success in reducing borrowing, telling detractors to take responsibility for the state's underdevelopment instead of placing the blame solely on Putrajaya. Treasurer Wong King Yii rebuked Kota Sentosa assemblyperson Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, who earlier said a reduction in borrowings means nothing to Sarawakians who live without basic essentials.

Sarawak charts path to statewide piped gas access, says Premier
Abang Johari cooks tapioca as a symbolic gesture for the launch. BINTULU (July 23): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reaffirmed the Sarawak government's strong commitment to expanding piped gas infrastructure to every household in the state – a move aimed at enhancing energy accessibility and economic equity. Speaking to reporters after launching the piped natural gas supply to homes in Sungai Plan here today, Abang Johari said the initiative is part of a long-term master plan to ensure Sarawakians benefit directly from the state's own gas resources. 'This is just the beginning of our effort to supply gas to our people so they can enjoy the benefits of the gas extracted in our own backyard,' he said. He cited a successful pilot project in the Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) housing area in Miri, where residents have seen savings of up to 40 per cent or around RM40 monthly after switching from gas cylinders to piped delivery. Determined to extend these benefits across Sarawak, the Premier unveiled the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, which outlines a statewide piped gas distribution system. 'We are developing a network of gas distribution hubs throughout Sarawak in Bintulu, Kuching, Miri, and possibly Sibu from where piped gas can be channeled to surrounding areas, even reaching remote towns like Kapit,' he said. According to him, the concept of piped gas is not new to Sarawak, citing earlier systems in Lutong, Sarawak and Seria, Brunei, that predate the formation of Malaysia. Abang Johari emphasised that Sarawak's legal framework, particularly the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance, remains intact and continues to empower the state to regulate and manage its own gas sector. Under this framework, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) has been formally appointed the sole gas aggregator for Sarawak, with full authority to manage supply from upstream to end users. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for endorsing this via a joint declaration between the federal and state governments, which enabled Petros to operate as the sole legal and operational aggregator. 'All companies involved in the gas business must comply with our existing laws. This is a people-centric project, and through the hub-and-spoke model, it will benefit not just urban dwellers but rural communities as well,' he said. The roadmap, he added, will offer tiered benefits across various user groups – residential homes, SMEs, and heavy industries such as methanol production – with rates based on consumption levels. 'The greatest impact will be on ordinary Sarawakians, especially B40 households and those with lower incomes, by easing their cost of living,' he said. Abang Johari also welcomed the federal government's latest cost-of-living measures announced today, including fuel price reductions and other incentives. 'PMX announced his support, and we too are helping our people. Thank you for the initiatives. It shows that the people of Sarawak benefit both from Kuala Lumpur and from Petra Jaya, Kuching,' he said. Also present at the event were deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Petros chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Hamid Bugo and other state Cabinet ministers and their deputies. One-off RM100 cash aid a step in the right direction, says Kuching South Mayor
Wee speaks to reporters today. – Photo by Roystein Emmor KUCHING (July 23): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has welcomed the federal government's RM100 cash aid initiative, describing it as a timely move to ease the financial burden of Malaysians amid rising living costs. Speaking to reporters at MBKS today, Wee said the assistance, though modest in amount, reflects the government's commitment to help the people during challenging times. 'In times like these, everyone has a responsibility and a role to play,' he said. He was asked to comment on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement earlier today of the cash assistance aimed at easing Malaysia's rising cost of living. He said this one-off assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, will be credited via MyKad for purchases of essential goods between Aug 31 and Dec 31 at 4,100 stores nationwide. Wee also noted that the initiative shows leadership and concern for the rakyat's well-being. While some may see RM100 as a small sum, Wee believes it's a step in the right direction — one that shows sincerity and could lead to more substantial support in the future as the country's finances improve. 'During this hard time, you know, some of the people look at it as a small help, but it's an effort they put up. 'We start small, and when the country's finances recover, there might be more to come. 'So whatever effort they put in, it is good for the rakyat (people),' he said. Wee also urged the public to adopt a more constructive attitude rather than criticising such initiatives outright. 'Some of the people say it's only a RM100, but better than nothing, is it not? 'If we can help, I think it's an initiative worth supporting. 'If we receive it, RM100 is still RM100. 'Who knows? Maybe another few more months, you might receive RM500, then later on increase to RM1,000. 'So look at it in a more positive way,' he said. He called on Malaysians to remain united and supportive, especially when genuine efforts are being made to assist the public. 'We all want to be proud of our country. So when leaders make an effort, we should take it in a positive spirit. 'If you want to comment, make sure it's constructive, don't just criticise.' Wee concluded by encouraging Malaysians to stay positive and move forward together, even through difficult times. anwar ibrahim RM100 cash assistance Wee Hong Seng
