Look inside the charming Edinburgh dog exhibition that's already selling out of paintings
From Gainsborough's portraits, to William Wegman's weimaraner photographs, our pups have always been celebrated in art.

Now, at an Edinburgh gallery, they're hosting a show that's dedicated to our four-legged pals.
Woof! The Dog Show opens at the Morningside Gallery on Saturday May 24, and runs until June 8. It features 50 new pieces of work - mainly paintings but with a few sculptures in the mix - from the likes of Joe Hargan PAI PPAI, Gordon Mitchell RSA RSW, Joyce Gunn Cairns MBE, Stuart Buchanan and Gordon Wilson.
As Eileadh Swan, director of the venue, says: 'It really is an incredible showcase of work from some wonderful contemporary artists, each with their own take on this timeless theme'.
To run alongside the exhibition, they're hosting a children's drawing competition, with illustrator and author Catherine Rayner, who created books including the Molly, Olive and Dexter series., as the head judge. They've already had around 700 entries from local schoolchildren, and the winning artworks will hang in the gallery alongside the main exhibition on Saturday May 31 and Sunday June 1, with an accompanying catalogue to feature all of the entries.
We asked Swan to tell us more about the exhibition.
Why did you decide to put together a dog-themed show?
One of our team is a dog lover and she had been researching famous dog paintings. She showed us various books and we chatted about Picasso and Hockney in particular. We also have a lot of doggy visitors to the gallery - Morningside and Bruntsfield are full of dogs and people do love them, so we thought it would be great to bring these two elements together - dogs in art and peoples' love of dogs. There are all sorts of reasons why people buy and engage with art, but one of the main ones is that they find it meaningful and have an emotional connection to the work, so this exhibition really ticks that box. It's also an opportunity to do something a little fun and really lean into the silly and joyful nature of dogs, and their individual characters. Just hanging the exhibition has already generated so much interest from passers-by, so we can't wait to welcome everyone in to enjoy the show.
Why is Morningside such a dog-friendly area?
There are a lot of dog-friendly cafés and shops locally, plus so much green space for dogs and their owners to enjoy.
How did you decide on the shortlist of artists?
We asked many of our regular artists to take part - some of them occasionally feature dogs within their paintings and others were delighted to take up the theme and challenge. The exhibition is not a collection of dog portraits, but rather a celebration of dogs - the paintings featured often have a narrative and story and the dogs are part of a larger context. Others focus on the faces, the softness of the fur, or the naughty glint in the eye - there's a real range within the exhibition but everything involves dogs in some way.
Some work has already sold, why do you think those particular pictures went so fast?
People often keep an eye out for new paintings from their favourite artists. We had a small dog painting by Fiona Macrae that everyone loved in our January 2025 Small Paintings Exhibition. A larger painting by the artist was the first to go this time as people were watching out for her work. Joe Hargan was quick to follow, again because his work has a large following - he often features dogs within his paintings (and cats!).
Are the sculptures as popular?
The Gemma Rees sculptures are very popular - they are lifelike and convey so much of the character of each dog. As a group in the window they create quite a stir with people gathering round, smiling and pointing out their favourites. They are just so engaging and even seem to warm the hearts of the doggy-indifferent.
Any personal favourites in the line-up?
I love Gordon Mitchell's Peggy because it's such a striking image. Also the big Joe Hargan painting A Question of Balance, as I'm a fan of the colour, composition and of course the dog painting within a dog painting - classic Hargan! And Richard Twose's Green Sofa, which is sumptuous, poised and elegant, with the dog looking out at the viewer, a perfect subject. But there are just too many to choose one!
Tell us more about the children's competition
We've often thought about connecting more with our local community in different ways. This started as a small idea and it's really grown arms and legs. We thought we would get a hundred entries if we were lucky and planned a little catalogue, but have ended up with over 700 entries - we're really bowled over by the enthusiasm. Illustrator and author Catherine Rayner agreed to judge the entries and we're looking forward to sharing a digital catalogue of all of the works by these budding young artists. We will also enjoy welcoming some of the children to see the show and of course for the winners to see their entries hanging as part of the exhibition.
Will you do a cat-themed show in the future?
Possibly!
The exhibition is open to the public, with all welcome to the Private View from 2 - 4pm on May 24., Morningside Gallery, 94 Morningside Road, Edinburgh (0131 447 3041, www.morningsidegallery.co.uk)

'I found the perfect 'blonzing' product for summer that rivals rhode'
'Blonzers' are on the rise for summer, and Mirror's shopping writer Grace tested out Refy's newest blush drop to see how it looked on the skin Popular beauty brand REFY is one of our favourites over here at the Mirror. From the popular Lip Sculpt to the Lash Sculpt mascara (loved by Molly-Mae by the way) and my personal favourite, the Brow Tint, Refy products never miss. And the brand has just extended its Cream Blush range with two new shades that are perfect for summer. The shades included are Rust, a deep, warm-toned burnt orange and Plum, a cool-toned deep berry. Thanks to Hailey Bieber sparking the berry-toned make-up trend, and her popular Toasted Teddy Pocket Blush from rhode, we're not surprised to see that orange and burgundy blush shades are on the rise. I'm a huge fan of orange and brown toned blushers that give that popular 'blonzed' or sunburnt look so I was so excited to see that REFY had launched these new shades. Refy Rust Cream Blush Review What I love most about REFY blushes is the smooth, buildable texture that melts into the skin and creates that natural sun-kissed flush, and this new Rust shade is no exception. I hate cream blushes that require you to work really hard with the formula, and luckily this blush is quite literally fool-proof. It glides efffortlessly onto the skin, especially when using the Refy Duo Brush to apply it. And priced at £16, it's a really wallet-friendly blush that only requries a little bit each time you use it. Creating that beautiful 'sunburnt' blush look that I aim for everytime I do my make-up, and this blush is really the shade of the summer. Although I've not personally tested out rhode's Toasted Teddy, it has that similar burnt terracotta tone that's so popular at the moment. I'm not the only fan of these cream blushes with Molly Mae raving about the shade Malaya. This is a cool dusty pink with neutral undertones, perfect if you like using a pink blush that's not overly bubblegum or coral pink and has more of a mauve-y depth to the shade. A few of my other favourite blushes that have that similar bronze-y feel includes the Morphe Cheek Thrills Multi Finish Face Trio Palette, a fairly new product but already a staple in my make-up bag and priced at £19. Plus the Nudestix Nudies All Over Face Matte Bronze, priced at £31.50, which I used as a blush rather than a bronzer.

Stanley Kubrick house inspires its own teen resident into film
A teenager who lives in Stanley Kubrick's former home says she has been inspired to become a film 17, said that living in Abbots Mead in Barnet Lane, Elstree, Hertfordshire, had "definitely sparked a bigger interest in the film industry".The house, which is up for sale, is where the American director managed productions for films such as The Shining, Barry Lyndon, A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space said she "did not know how famous he was until I went to film school". "I don't think I appreciated the history of this house enough until I started looking into things like media and I heard a lot about Stanley Kubrick," she said visitors to the home either "love or hate the property".She used to choreograph plays at school and in 10 years' time she said she would love to be an artistic director and follow in the footsteps of the film teacher at college said she would "love to come round and see it" when she revealed whose former home she lived in. Molly's mother Victoria said she had lived in the house for more than 40 years and when they first moved into the property "it was very creepy".She said there was a storm and the "wind whistled through the house" and floorboards creeped, and it felt like being in The time though, she said it became "a lovely family home".She said fans of Kubrick, "mainly Americans", have come to the house every few months and "it amazes me - the fans he still has".These visitors are allowed to walk around the outside and see the former garage where Kubrick edited films, Victoria said. Local Savills director Steven Spencer said a lot of Kubrick's "great work was done here and that is what makes this a piece of cinematic history".He said "we believe people have come from around the world just to see the shelves [in the workshop]" which featured in A Clockwork sitting room was used as "his cinema room where he watched his films probably for many hours until he was happy" he added. The nine-bedroom property, which has a blue plaque dedicated to Kubrick outside, is listed for sale with Savills for a guide price of £6,950, lived at the house between 1965 and 1979, before moving to Childwickbury Estate, near St Albans, where he stayed until his death in 1999. Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury enjoy luxury family staycation after rekindling romance
Molly-Mae and Tommy are enjoying a family staycation in the Cotswolds with their daughter Bambi Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury have taken to the Cotswolds for a charming family staycation, just weeks after they publicly rekindled their relationship. The 26-year-old old influencer and her boxer beau are enjoying a break with their two year old daughter Bambi. Molly-Mae took to Instagram Stories to share adorable images of the family-of-three's time away. Sharing a mirror selfie, Molly revealed in a caption: "Back from St Tropez and straight to the Cotswolds for a surprising staycation. This look is giving mum who's had approx 3 seconds to get ready." The Love Island star then shared an image from Aynhoe Park, the grand 17th-century country house on the edge of Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire, close to the Cotswolds, which she described as "heaven". Molly-Mae shared several photos of the house's interior, as well as cute pictures of Bambi toddling about with a mini pram. She said the mum and daughter were playing a game where her baby doll was 'put to bed' in every room. More snaps from the holiday showed Molly-Mae grinning next to Tommy with little Bambi in the foreground. Another showed Molly-Mae and Bambi enjoying pool time. Molly-Mae humorously described the challenge of telling Bambi she couldn't swim, comparing it to an impossible task, laughing: "Never gonna happen. It was freezing." Molly and Tommy, who first found love on Love Island in 2019, went Instagram official with their reunion a few weeks ago. The pair were seen enjoying ice creams with their daughter Bambi in a heart-warming day out. Their split last summer had come as a shock to many, especially since they had been building their dream life together since meeting on the show. They had bought a house together and welcomed their first child. In August, they both released statements about their separation on social media but in her Amazon Prime series, 'Molly-Mae: Behind it all,' the reality TV star teased her rekindled romance with her ex-fiancé. Molly-Mae opened up about her relationship with Tommy in the latest episode of her docuseries, admitting things have taken a positive turn since their split and "are looking so much better." The influencer shared her thoughts on the relationship, describing it as "worth saving", and expressed her desire to take things slowly with Tommy, rather than rushing into anything. On the documentary's reception, Molly-Mae expressed her gratitude on social media, writing: "I'm so overwhelmed by the response to the last three episodes of 'Molly-Mae: Behind it all.' "Opening up again wasn't any easier than the first time... I was so nervous to share more but seeing how much it's resonated with people has meant everything to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart." Just this week, Molly-Mae confirmed that a second series of the Prime Video show is in production, hot on the heels of Tyson and Paris Fury's announcement of a second season for their Netflix reality show.
