Man Utd vs Arsenal player ratings: Fernandes and Rice produce excellence

Arsenal's slim hopes of catching Liverpool in the Premier League table were dealt another blow by a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
Declan Rice's second-half equaliser brought Mikel Arteta's side back into the game after Bruno Fernandes had given United a first-half lead with a powerful free-kick.
Could not be criticised for Rice's powerful effort and otherwise stood up well to Arsenal's shots from distance. Distribution was inconsistent. 6
A mentally challenging afternoon, having to keep an eye on Arsenal's midfield runners and worry about Merino's physical approach. Coped with it well, overall. 6
Like De Ligt, seemed happy enough to be focusing on Arsenal's collection of midfielders rather than a true centre-forward. Solid showing. 6
French defender was made to worry about Timber's overlapping runs but the game mostly took place in front of him. Substituted with a knock. 6
Denied by a spectacular Raya save shortly after the break, when he should have scored. Remained energetic and diligent. 6
Hardly touched the ball in the first half but still produced a moment of genuine quality with his powerful free-kick. Another sign of his importance. 7

Not the day to demonstrate his quality on the ball, instead doing his best work without possession on the edge of his box. Battled hard throughout. 7
Won his individual battle with Nwaneri and, despite looking awkward on the ball at times, produced an excellent cross which Mazraoui almost converted. 6
United's most threatening player throughout, causing plenty of problems for Arsenal with his speed on the counter-attack. 7
United's inability to keep hold of the ball meant he had to worry more about his defensive duties than his attacking possibilities. Worked hard without shining. 5
Found it difficult to overpower Saliba for most of his 76 minutes on the pitch, aside from one impressive turn. Could not finish his one chance. 5

Strange positioning on the Fernandes free-kick provided the United captain with a huge target. An embarrassing moment, but he made some fabulous saves afterwards. 6

The former Ajax defender is always composed on the ball and he tried to push forward throughout the game. Showed his skill in assisting Rice's goal. 7
For most of the game he was the dominant man in the physical battle with Zirkzee. Seemed comfortable throughout the afternoon. 6
Arsenal's dominance of possession meant that the Brazilian had very little defending to do, before he denied Hojlund a late goal with an excellent block. 6
Looked defensively uncomfortable whenever he was faced with Garnacho on the counter-attack. Replaced by Lewis-Skelly before the hour. 5
Arsenal's most industrious player for most of the game, buzzing around midfield and looking for openings. Simply did not have the runners in front of him. 7
Tidy in possession, as usual, but seemed reluctant to play the adventurous forward passes that Arsenal needed at times. Removed with 15 minutes to play. 6
Pulled Arsenal back into the game with his excellent finish and then produced a magnificent defensive challenge to prevent Hojlund from scoring a late winner. 8
"BELTER." 🎙️A fine Declan Rice strike draws Arsenal level! pic.twitter.com/z7wDT5evHj

Teenage sensation could not produce any spark in the final third on this occasion. He was well managed by Dalot as he tried to cut inside. 5
Simply does not look comfortable as a centre-forward, understandably. Dragged an early shot wide before moving into midfield. Almost gave away a late goal. 5
Curled wide from the edge of the box and almost reached Odegaard's scooped pass. Busy without ever looking likely to really hurt United's defence. 6
Substitutes
Martinelli (Nwaneri 58)Lewis-Skelly (Calafiori 58)Tierney (Partey 76)

'Don't settle for this': Postecoglou wants ambition from Tottenham after Europa League success

LONDON (AP) — Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has urged the club to show ambition after ending its 17-year trophy drought as he awaits a decision on whether he will stay on for a third season at the English team. Tottenham claimed its first piece of major silverware since 2008 by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final last month, earning in the process a spot in next season's Champions League. Advertisement Postecoglou remains in the dark about his future, though, with his status affected by Tottenham's 17th-placed finish — its lowest since the Premier League was founded in 1992. In an interview with Australian Broadcasting Corp. — published Monday — while on a family holiday in Greece, Postecoglou said he hasn't wanted to let the club 'just enjoy the moment' because he 'wanted us to think about what's next.' 'Don't settle for this,' he tells ABC's Australian Story. 'We've got a taste of it now. My players have got a taste for it. The club's got a taste for it. Well, let's make sure we're back here again.' Those comments explain why, during Tottenham's trophy parade, the 59-year-old Australian declared in front of tens of thousands of fans in north London: 'Season three is always better than season two.' Advertisement However, away from winning the Europa League, Tottenham has been on a downward trajectory in the Premier League since the team's strong start to Postecoglou's first season in charge. This season, he clearly made Europa League success the priority over results in the Premier League, rotating heavily and protecting the fitness of various key players. Tottenham lost 22 of its 38 league games and that woeful record has increased the scrutiny and pressure on Postecoglou. 'That was when the laser focus came in,' Postecoglou said in Australian Story when explaining why he essentially sacrificed the league. 'Every decision I made was around, 'Well, how do we navigate this to get to where we want to?'' ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Joe Montemurro appointed Australia Women's head coach after Lyon exit

Joe Montemurro has been appointed head coach of the Australia Women's national team. It was announced on Sunday that Montemurro, 55, would be departing Lyon after a single season in charge, and he will officially begin his position at Australia on June 16. Australia have been without a permanent manager since Tony Gustavsson resigned following the side's group stage elimination at the 2024 Olympics. Former USWNT head coach Tom Sermanni has led the team on an interim basis. Advertisement Montemurro will oversee the team for the first time in a pair of friendly double-headers against Slovenia and Panama in June and July as Australia build towards the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup on home soil. Football Australia interim chief executive officer Heather Garriock described Montemurro's appointment as coming at a 'critical time' for the team ahead of the Asian Cup next year, 2027 World Cup in Brazil and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Montemurro takes the role after almost a decade coaching in Europe with Arsenal, Juventus and Lyon, winning league titles at all three clubs. He moved to Europe following spells in charge of Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City, and the national team job marks his return to his home country Australia and first position in international management 'I'm here because of the love of the game here and the love of the opportunity to come back,' he said. 'All these years that I went through the coaching journey in Australia, all these years through the A-League… to be given the opportunity to lead one of the best brands in the world, one of the most exciting teams in the world, and to do it at home, it's something quite emotional.' Australia reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Women's World Cup, which they co-hosted with New Zealand, and were beaten in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. They exited the Paris Olympics at the group stages after winning just once at the tournament. 'Every one of the criteria, Joe ticks,' Garriock added. 'That's the reason why we fought so hard to get Joe back to Australia. He's Australian, and Australian-based. He loves football, he loves the nation. He wants to develop the next generation, and he knows how to win a few trophies.'
