Public irked over delay in reopening of Botanical Garden
Much to the disappointment of residents and tourists alike, the green lung of the city, the Botanical Garden, has been kept out of bounds during peak summer after agriculture department closed the facility for Puducherry Smart City Development Limited (PSCDP) to take up renovation work of the garden.
The garden was closed for public in 2024 for renovation works which included, landscaping, sprucing up of the garden, construction of an amphitheatre, jogging track, pathways, reconstruction of ticket counter, improvement of fountains and provision for battery-operated joy train at a cost of ₹9.11 crore. The works were scheduled to be completed in January this year.
While there have been claims and counter claims by the agriculture department and PSCDP over the status of the work, the public are angry over the closure of the facility for so long. PSCDP officials said they had met the Director of Agriculture around two weeks ago and explained about all the works done. A book regarding the works completed was submitted to the department, said a PSCDP officer.
However, an official in the Agriculture Department maintained that some more works were pending and it would take a few more days for reopening the garden.
'When we went to the garden during Christmas vacation last year, we were told by the security personnel that it will be opened in January this year. After the closure of school in April, we went again but the garden remained closed. We were told it will take at least a month for its opening. After Bharathi Park, the Botanical Garden is the only place for us to relax in a natural environment. The government should have planned for reopening the facility during summer vacation,' said Ravikanth, a resident of Lawspet.
The security guards posted at the entrance say a lot of tourists come on a daily basis to visit the place. ' All major works were completed weeks ago and even new battery operated vehicles have been procured and kept ready for tourists. The toy train is also ready. Only the signage board work is going on,' said a guard posted near the entrance of Marimalaiadigal Salai.
The garden was established in 1826 by the French botanist George Samuel Perrottet on an experimental basis to preserve the unique vegetation of the region. The 22-acre garden has a collection over 2, 400 trees, 213 genus types and 293 species. The garden is the venue for the annual flower show in Puducherry.

Puducherry rolls out caravan tourism
Travellers visiting Puducherry, a former French outpost, for its scenic beaches and heritage architecture can soon hire fully-equipped camper vans with queen-size convertible beds, washroom, smart television, speaker systems, air-condition, and a kitchenette among others. Puducherry is the latest to join the bandwagon of caravan tourism, which is considered a luxury segment. The caravan culture has grown in popularity in recent years in India, especially in the southern States of Karnataka and Kerala. In a move aimed at strengthening its tourism appeal, the Puducherry Transport Department has opened its doors and brought camper vans and caravans under a formal tax structure. This key initiative facilitates the issuance of permits not only for Puducherry-registered vehicles, but also for vehicles from other States, through a convenient tax system for three, seven and 30-day durations. According to Transport Commissioner A.S. Sivakumar, 'The new tax policy notified by the Government covers vehicles registered as camper vans or caravans, classified under Public Service Vehicle, Contract Carriage, or Transport categories, regardless of their seating capacity.' Tax structure The annual tax structure for light and medium vehicles and heavy vehicles is ₹32,000 and ₹48,000 respectively. The vehicles can be hired for three days, seven days and 30 days duration with tax slabs ranging from ₹860 to ₹4,200 for light and medium vehicles and ₹1,340 to ₹8,800 for heavy vehicles. He added, 'This structured framework is expected to significantly boost tourism, especially in the growing segment of road-based travel and adventure tourism. It allows travellers from across India to explore Puducherry in their own caravans, bringing both convenience and compliance under one roof.' With Puducherry being a preferred destination for movie shooting, the move is expected to provide a fillip for film tourism. With Puducherry's unique blend of French colonial charm, scenic beaches, and heritage architecture, the region has long been a favoured location for film and advertisement shoots. The new temporary tax permits make it easier for film production units to bring in their mobile vans, crew caravans, and support vehicles, encouraging more filmmakers to consider Puducherry as their prime destination. According to an official, 'This initiative will lead to increased footfall from road trip enthusiasts and eco-tourists, growth in mobile tourism and camper-based holidays, and greater influx of film production teams, enhancing Puducherry's profile as a creative hub.' While many States have caravan tourism, the issue of permits has not been explored so far. As a result, vehicles face hurdles during transit. However, Puducherry has come out with a formal structure. This will ensure that Puducherry cements its place as a tourism-forward and film-friendly destination, welcoming travellers, explorers, and creators alike - with clear rules, smoother logistics, and open roads, Mr. Sivakumar added.

Getting visa from Croatia Game Of Thrones: 10 IIM-Calcutta friends since 1979 plan reunion, permit delays spoil dream trip; Rs 4 lakh loss each
NEW DELHI: Ten friends from IIM Calcutta in 1979 and went on to make it big in life. Now in their 70s, they decided to have a reunion. Eight of them, with their spouses, and the rest two planned a visit to their dream destination - Croatia - and were supposed to leave India on May 20. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Barring seven foreign citizens in a group of 18, eleven needed Schengen visas from Croatia for which they applied well in time between Feb 14 and March 12, as they were told the processing time was about two months. The group had planned to celebrate the 70th birthday of one of them on the scenic Adriatic coast. That was the plan. And this is what happened: The very tedious task of getting visas from Croatia in India meant only nine of them - including four US citizens, two French and one Australian - could leave for Croatia as per the plan. The remaining nine had to either cancel or alter their travel plans at a huge cost, ranging from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 6 lakh per person. In short, the reunion did not happen. "We and our family members were constantly writing to the Croatian embassy to issue the visas but they did not even respond. Our travel agent tried to help but could do nothing. My wife and I finally got our passports back from the Croatian embassy in Delhi and are now leaving for UK and US," said Mumbai-based Ramakrishnan Rajaram, 75, who retired as president of a big textile company on May 23. "My original plan was to go with my wife to Croatia and then head for UK and US. We are now skipping Croatia. Rescheduling our tickets has cost me Rs 4 lakh," Rajaram said, sad that the reunion did not work out. The group has had several reunions in different parts of the world earlier without facing an issue like this. "All the 11 Indians in our group of 18 had applied well in time for the visa. They have very limited slots. Two of our friends decided to stay a day longer in Switzerland than Croatia during this trip. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Because of that, they applied to the Swiss embassy and got their Schengen visa in 3-4 days. We had applied for our Schengen visas with the Croatian embassy but didn't receive any. We kept chasing once the two-month period got over but the embassy did not respond. At our age, we don't know if we can have another planned reunion like this," said Rajaram. Pune-based Nandu Kulkarni, who retired from a software company, and his wife were to join the trip. They gave their visa interview at VFS's Croatia counter on March 6 and submitted their passports along with all documents. When they did not get any intimation about their visa status after May 6, the 60 days needed for processing the visas, they sent reminders to the embassy. However, right till the day of travel, they did not hear from the embassy. They set out from Pune for Mumbai airport, hoping they would get their passports through the travel agency in time for their trip but had to return to Pune disappointed. "Rajaram and I have travelled extensively all over the world on business and on vacations. We never had this kind of experience with any country," Kulkarni said. Travel agents, on condition of anonymity, told TOI that getting a Croatian visa appointment is very difficult. "We advise our clients to get a Schengen visa from some other country for going to Croatia. The travel agents of these people should have advised them accordingly," they said. Croatia has emerged as a much-coveted destination, particularly after the hugely popular HBO serial, 'Game of Thrones', was shot in the historic town of Dubrovnik and other places there. Bollywood too has been heading for this small country The Croatian embassy was asked why applications for visas were disappearing into a black hole despite the growing popularity of their country that was once a part of erstwhile Yugoslavia but no comment was received. The CEO of a leading foreign airline said the entire thing was baffling. "Post Covid, almost all tourist destinations are trying hard to woo visitors from India. Here is an incredibly beautiful country that Indians would love to visit but it has made it difficult for them to do so," he said.
