Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Ruben Amorim lay flowers at Anfield memorial as Man United pay tribute to Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva

Daily Mail14-07-2025
Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Ruben Amorim have laid flowers on behalf of Manchester United at the Anfield memorial for Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
Fernandes and Dalot lifted the Nations League trophy alongside Jota last month after Portugal beat Spain on penalties in Munich, just weeks before the Liverpool star and his brother died in a car crash in northern Spain.
Jota was returning to Liverpool for pre-season training after winning the Premier League title last season when his Lamborghini left the road in Zamora. Jota was 28 and his brother, a player for Liga Portugal 2 side Penafiel, was 25.
The United duo and the club's Portuguese coach Amorim arrived at Anfield on Monday dressed all in black carrying a wreath in memory of the two brothers and a card that read: 'Rest in peace Diogo and Andre, with deepest condolences from everyone at Manchester United.'

Fernandes and Dalot were pictured standing with their heads bowed in front of the tributes at Anfield as they paid their respects to their late teammate.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Fernandes posted a heartfelt message on social media earlier this month, saying: 'Friend, colleague and companion in a thousand battles, it is difficult to understand how it is possible for someone to leave so soon. May you and your brother find the peace you need to look after those you lost so soon and suddenly. My condolences to your entire family.'
Dalot added simply: 'Devastating... speechless... much strength to the family.'

Leah Williamson makes England vow as Lionesses celebrate Euros win in style

Leah Williamson has captained England's Lionesses to back-to-back European Championships successes and spoke on stage during the squad's victory parade in central London Leah Williamson insists England's days of fighting for titles are far from over, with the back-to-back Euros winners preparing for the 2027 World Cup. Lionesses captain Williamson has now skippered the side to two straight European Championships victories. ‌ She lifted the trophy once more at Tuesday's celebration parade in central London, and told fans there was plenty more to come. "I've been crying all the way down The Mall," Williamson said on stage at the Queen Victoria Memorial. ‌ "This is unbelievable, probably one of the best things we've been a part of." She added: "My message is, everything we do, obviously we do some things for ourselves and the team, we do it for the country, we do it for young girls. ‌ 'This job never existed 30 years ago. We're making history with everything we do. "Thank you so much for being with us, staying with us. This is not done yet." England did things the hard way at Euro 2025 in Switzerland but successfully defended the title they won on home soil three years ago. Williamson's Arsenal team-mate Chloe Kelly was England's saviour throughout the knockout stages as they came from behind to beat Sweden, Italy and Spain - with all three matches going to extra-time and two decided on penalties. "There are loads of ways to win a football match,' Williamson added. 'We repeatedly did it the hard way. But you can see how much we care about playing for England and how much we love it. ‌ "2022 was a fairytale. This feels really hard-earned. We're really proud of ourselves." England boss Sarina Wiegman has a contract until the end of the 2027 World Cup, which will be held in Brazil. The draw for the European qualifying phase will be held in November, with the first qualifying matches themselves taking place in February next year. ‌ England made it all the way to the final of the last World Cup, which was held in Australia and New Zealand. Spain won the trophy on that occasion, but the Lionesses got their revenge on Sunday in Basel. "Pressure? What pressure?' said Kelly, who scored the winning penalty in the final. 'It feels so good to stand with these girls and all the backroom staff. Thank you to everyone who turned out. "It's so special. This medal is so special. Everyone knows exactly what it takes to win it. But it's so hard to win. Sarina has done it so many times. It's so special. I'm so proud to be English." ‌ Wiegman pointed to the quality running through the squad after England bounced back from losing their opening game to end up lifting the trophy. 'There is a huge pool of talent in this team,' Wiegman said. 'We want to play to our strengths always. The bonding of this team in this tournament made the absolute difference. 'Everybody was ready to step up and support each other. It was just amazing to be a part of." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Ruben Amorim's dream Man Utd XI with Ollie Watkins joining another big signing

Manchester United are preparing for their first full season under Ruben Amorim and the Red Devils manager wants a new-look XI to turn their fortunes around and qualify for Europe We're approaching the final month of the summer transfer window and Manchester United still have plenty of work to do. The Red Devils got off to a lightning-fast start by signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves on the first day of the window, triggering his £62.5million release clause. ‌ Bryan Mbeumo's arrival, however, was much more complicated and Ruben Amorim had to be patient. Weeks of fraught negotiations with Brentford culminated in United agreeing to pay up to £71m for him last Monday. ‌ That takes the Red Devils' spending to £133.5m, a hefty sum in isolation but far behind the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. United don't have an unlimited budget, though. ‌ They're reliant on sales, with four members of Amorim's bomb squad - Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia - still at the club. But that hasn't stopped United from working on deals. Mirror Football understands that in their search for a new striker, Ollie Watkins has been identified as their No.1 target. Aston Villa insist that the 29-year-old isn't for sale at any price but Old Trafford chiefs are hoping to get a deal done for between £40m and £45m. They're not just focussed on attack, as at the other end, Amorim wants competition from Andre Onana. Royal Antwerp prospect Senne Lammens has been linked but now there's chance to sign one of the world's best. Gianluigi Donnarumma has reportedly been made available by Paris Saint-Germain, who've agreed a £34m deal for Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. Therefore, if United were able to make the finances work, they could offer the Italian - whose contract in Paris expires next summer - a move to the Premier League. Donnarumma would play behind a three-man defence, something which he's used to at international level. Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and the currently injured Lisandro Martinez are likely to be Amorim's preferred defensive trio. ‌ The wing-back positions are crucial for the Red Devils boss and it'll be a battle between Amad, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui on the right. As for the left-hand side, January signing Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw and teenager Diego Leon will compete. Where would Manchester United finish with this XI? Give us your prediction in the comments section. ‌ Bruno Fernandes, who snubbed a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia earlier this summer, is likely to move into a deeper role as a result of United's forward-heavy recruitment. Casemiro would be a stable partner for the big occasions but Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo each offer something different. Up front, it takes no working out. Should the Red Devils land Watkins, he'll reunite with former Brentford team-mate Mbeumo and play alongside Cunha in a Premier League-proven trident.
