Free entry demanded for medal winners at Smart City swimming pool

Time of India16 hours ago

Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada Swimming Association has demanded that winners of state and national level swimming events be given free entry at the Yemmekere Swimming Pool complex.
Association president Yathish Bykampady told reporters on Friday, that the contract to maintain the new swimming pool has been awarded to a private agency, which does not allow swimmers trained by external coaches.
Following persistent requests from people's representatives for the past 15 years, a new swimming pool of international standards has been developed by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) exclusively for athletes.
However, the new swimming pool, where practice sessions were held until Dec 2024, has been handed over to We One Aqua Centre, and athletes are being denied entry, he said.
"We have requested district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to allow swimmers who have won national and state level medals to have free entry at the Yemmekere Swimming Pool. Following this, the minister sent a directive to the deputy commissioner. However, no action has been initiated even after two months," Yathish said.

The Yemmekere Swimming Pool was built at a cost of Rs 24.9 crore, with Rs 2 crore reserved for three years of maintenance. However, the private agency has been allowing training for swimmers on a conditional basis, he said.
Pool director denies allegations
Meanwhile, Naveen Padil, director of We One Aqua Centre, which secured the tender from MSCL to run the pool, told reporters that he made a security deposit of Rs 50 lakh and is paying Rs 2.6 lakh as a monthly fee after taking over the pool through an open tender.
Refuting the charges made by the Dakshina Kannada Swimming Association, Naveen said that they have not denied entry to national level swimmers.
"Based on requests from people's representatives and officials, we have given free entry to swimmers who won national and international medals at the swimming pool. However, we have made it clear that coaches will not be allowed due to technical reasons," he added.

Siddaramaiah Govt Gave Conditional Nod To RCB's Vidhana Soudha Event, Anticipated Huge Crowd

Last Updated: The victory celebrations for RCB, which lifted the IPL trophy after 18 years, turned tragic on Wednesday as 11 people were killed in a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium The Karnataka government had granted written permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for an event at Vidhana Soudha to celebrate the victory of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL, a communication accessed by CNN-News18 has revealed. The letter, dated June 4, was a swift response to KSCA's request on June 3, but came with a comprehensive list of stringent conditions, anticipating a large gathering. The victory celebrations for RCB, which lifted the IPL trophy after 18 years, turned tragic on Wednesday as 11 people were killed in a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium near the Vidhan Soudha. Foremost among the government's concerns was the potential for damage to the iconic Vidhana Soudha premises. 'As a large crowd is expected, precautions must be taken to ensure no damage is caused to the grand steps, statues, roads, or gardens," the letter stated, making it clear that KSCA would be liable for full repair costs in case of any mishap. Other key conditions included obtaining prior permissions from the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, BBMP, and other authorities, ensuring no obstruction to traffic or office work, and maintaining strict cleanliness. Plastic items were strictly prohibited. Financial stipulations were also laid out, requiring a Rs 10,000 advance security deposit for refreshments and a non-refundable Rs 10,000 cleaning fee. Crucially, a substantial security deposit of Rs 15 lakh was mandated for tents and other arrangements. The government also insisted on mandatory certifications for any structural or electrical installations on the grand steps, emphasising the KSCA's sole responsibility for any untoward incidents. Further safety measures included the deployment of firefighters, fire tenders, and health department medical staff. Drone usage was strictly banned as the area is a no-drone zone. The letter also stipulated that furniture must be removed within three hours of the event's conclusion to avoid forfeiture of the security deposit, and that KSCA was responsible for identifying and managing invitees. The letter comes amid a blame-game between the government and the organisers over the event that killed 11 and led to over 45 being injured. CNN-News18 had earlier reported that Bengaluru Police were not in favour of the felicitation ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha. The chaos erupted with RCB announcing the victory parade in a social media post on Wednesday morning. What ensued was utter chaos—uncertainty over the parade's status, conflicting information about ticket requirements, poor communication, multiple rescheduling, and finally the tragedy. The chief minister had then blamed the Karnataka Cricket Association, which had organised the event, saying: 'We did not organise the event, the cricket association did. Our duty was to provide security. The crowd turnout should have been equal to the number of passes given. What can we do if more people come? Let's see what the investigation finds, whether (lapses by) association or police," he said. First Published: June 07, 2025, 13:32 IST

Trouble for Virat Kohli? Complaint filed against RCB superstar in Bengaluru after Chinnaswamy stampede

Social activist HM Venkatesh submitted the complaint against RCB superstar Virat Kohli on Friday at Bengaluru's Cubbon Park Police Station, whose jurisdiction covers the M Chinnaswamy Stadium where a stampede on Wednesday left 11 dead. read more Virat Kohli has had quite the topsy-turvy week, from fulfilling his lifelong dream of lifting the IPL trophy with RCB to being named in a police custody following a tragic incident in Bengaluru. AP Following the arrest of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's marking head and the detention of three executives from event management firm DNA Entertainment, a complaint has been filed against batting superstar Virat Kohli in connection with the stampede that had broken out at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru earlier this week and had left 11 dead. According to news agency Asian News International, social activist HM Venkatesh submitted the complaint on Friday at the Cubbon Park Police Station, whose jurisdiction covers the Chinnaswamy Stadium that had witnessed tragic scenes on Wednesday. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It was also at the Cubbon Park Police Station where Bengaluru Police had filed a First Information Report (FIR) in which the RCB franchise had been named as accused number one, with DNA Entertainment and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) named as accused number two and three respectively. Why has a complaint been registered against Kohli Venkatesh's complaint against Kohli doesn't name the batting superstar and former India and RCB captain as the individual directly responsible for causing 11 deaths and leaving several more – 75 according to some reports – injured. Instead, it accuses the 36-year-old of promoting 'gambling through IPL' which 'incited' people to gather outside the Chinnaswamy in large numbers, leading to the tragedy. 'Virat Kohli of the Bangalore RCB team is the most prominent among those who participated in such gambling and incited people to gather in a specific place and caused this tragedy. Therefore, we request you to please make Virat Kohli and his team members accused in the FIR of this tragedy and take action,' read Venkatesh's complaint at the Cubbon Park Police Station. The complaint will be considered under the already registered case against RCB and other parties and will be examined during the course of the ongoing investigation. Kohli and wife Anushka Sharma had returned to London via Mumbai a day after the victory celebration in Bengaluru, which had taken place less than 24 hours after RCB defeated Punjab Kings by 6 runs to end a 17-year wait for a maiden IPL title. RCB marking and revenue head Nikhil Sosale, however, was arrested at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport in the early hours of Friday in connection with the stampede case upon a directive from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and also ordered an investigation into the incident. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Sosale had moved the Karnataka High Court later on Friday describing his arrest as arbitrary and illegal", but failed to get interim relief from police custory, with Justice SR Krishna Kumar adjourning proceedings to Monday. The Karnataka HC, however, did grant interim conditional relief to senior KSCA officials, stating that no coercive action could be taken against them so long as they co-operated with the ongoing investigation and did not leave their jurisdiction.
