Matang water main repairs halted due to technical issues, completion expected by early morning

The burst 750mm pumping main along Jalan Batu Kawa-Matang near Emart Moyan. KUCHING (Aug 7): Ongoing repair works on a major 1100mm Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pumping main along Jalan Matang, near Taman Heng Guan here were temporarily halted today due to unforeseen technical challenges. In a statement, Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (formerly Laku Management Sdn Bhd) said the repair operation was suspended around 3.30am due to complications involving dewatering, poor site conditions, and other technical issues. 'Inspection revealed that the pipe had been dislocated. Although three-quarters of the circumference had already been welded, a leak was still detected at the bottom section,' the company read. The company said repair works will resume once the site is stabilised and all necessary safety measures, especially around nearby Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) cables, are in place to ensure the safety of workers and surrounding infrastructure. In a separate incident, Sarawak Water reported a second incident involving a burst 750mm MSCL pumping main near Emart Moyan along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa stretch at about 11pm on Wednesday. 'The affected pipeline was immediately isolated to prevent further road damage and flooding in the vicinity. Repair works commenced at 12pm this afternoon and are expected to be completed by 4am (Aug 8),' the company added. As a result, residents in the following areas may experience low water pressure or temporary supply disruptions throughout the repair period: Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa (from Tondong traffic light to Malihah Methodist Church) Jalan Sungai Moyan Jalan Batu Kawa Bazaar Jalan Batu Kawa Tondong-Bau Jalan Sin San Tu A & B Jalan Moyan Indah, Jalan Min Chung Jalan Kim Pang Jalan Kim Cho Sin Jalan Rantau Panjang Jalan Batu Kawa Chong Jin Chong Jalan Pei Yuan Selatan Jalan Genesis Industrial Park Other surrounding areas Sarawak Water assured that it is actively monitoring the situation and working to restore full water service as safely and quickly as possible. 'We appreciate the public's patience and cooperation during this period. All personnel involved are reminded to exercise extreme caution, particularly when working near SEB cables,' it added. Delay in RUB work causes traffic bottlenecks in city

1 2 Mangaluru: The long delay in opening the twin railway underbridges (RUB) at Mahakalipadpu in the city is causing severe traffic snarls on the Pumpwell bypass road, the main entry point to Mangaluru city. The Palakkad division of the Southern Railway has already completed the pushing of all the four concrete boxes. However, the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) could not complete the concrete roads on either side of the RUBs. The MSCL authorities say that the work can be started only if the Railways complete the laying of the pipeline to clear the water at the site. A series of protests were held seeking the authorities to complete the RUB work at Mahakalipadpu ever since the road from Jeppu to Jappinamogaru was closed to facilitate the RUB work. The Rs 50 crore 4-lane RUB project was initiated on March 29, 2021, by the then MP of Dakshina Kannada Nalin Kumar Kateel and Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath. Currently, all vehicles from Kerala, Ullal, Konaje, Mudipu, and other places enter Mangaluru city via Pumpwell bypass road, leading to traffic snarls during peak hours. Once the RUB at Mahakalipadpu is commissioned, the traffic density on the Pumpwell bypass stretch will reduce considerably. DYFI Dakshina Kannada district secretary Santhosh Bajal said that a lack of willpower among elected representatives is a major hindrance that leads to delays in development works. He said an action committee formed to demand completion of the RUB at Mahakalipadpu has held several protests and submitted memorandums to the authorities. "We will hold a dharna in front of the office of MSCL or Railways if the work gets delayed further," he added. Tulunada Rakshana Vedike founder president Yogish Shetty Jeppu, who has been at the forefront of protests for the cause, called upon the public to, "Join hands and seek authorities concerned to expedite the work." MSCL general manager (technical) Arun Prabha KS said that water accumulates at the RUB site, making it difficult to take up the development of the road. "Railways will have to lay a 300m pipeline, but they have laid only about 120m so far. We have been working at the site and will expedite the work once the pipeline laying work is completed," he added.

200 smart AI powered cameras start to detect traffic violations

Mangaluru: Nearly 200 smart cameras installed on Mangaluru city roads by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) have started capturing images of traffic violators. Once implemented fully, the intelligent traffic management system will send auto-generated traffic slips to the mobile phones of vehicle owners. Mangaluru City traffic police have already commenced the trial run, and violators have been receiving alert messages on their phones. However, the system will be officially launched in July, and thereafter, violators will have to pay penalties as per the Motor Vehicles Rules. The high-resolution cameras installed at prominent locations in the city started detecting various violations, including two-wheeler riding without a helmet, car driving without a seat belt, wrong-side driving, and signal jumping. The MSCL installed nearly 200 artificial intelligence cameras at various locations on the main roads of the city. High-resolution cameras equipped with AI tools are monitoring traffic flow and effectively detecting violations. The cameras provide real-time visuals, while the AI tools analyse the captured footage to identify and track traffic offences. DCP (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar told TOI that the entire system is under a trial run and it will be made fully functional from July 1. "Those who violate traffic rules will receive messages on their mobile phones during the trial run. However, we are not framing charges based on the camera inputs for the time being. We are planning to launch the system from next month with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC). All cameras are linked to the NIC. After completing all necessary procedures, the system will be in place to check traffic violations in the city. In the next 10 days, we will be able to rectify all technical issues," he said. Smart cameras have been installed on MG Road, Bendoorwell, Mangaladevi, Pandeshwar, Mallikatta, Bejai, and several other locations.
