Concrete boxes pushing complete, but Mahakalipadpu twin RuB not commissioned

Notwithstanding about three weeks at its disposal to complete the approach roads for the twin Railway Under Bridge (RuB) at Mahakalipadpu, the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) has been unable to do the job, thereby indefinitely postponing commissioning of the crucial RuB. While Southern Railway's Palakkad division had completed pushing the last of the four concrete boxes for the twin RuB on April 17, and removed the last girder beneath the Mangaluru Central-Shoranur Down line on April 23, MSCL has completed only a portion of the approach road on Jeppinamogaru side. Work on the approach road at Morgan's Gate side was yet to commence, by which time rains began lashing the coast. MSCL had promised to facilitate commissioning of the twin RuB by May-end, thereby ending over four years' ordeal of thousands of road users in Mangaluru who were forced to take a detour via Pumpwell Circle all these days. With rains arriving at the coast much earlier than expected, the MSLC had to stop work on the approach road. Working in dry spells Blaming rains that started on May 15 for the incomplete approach roads, a senior MSCL official said the Smart City would get the road work completed during dry spell projected till June 14. The Railways has to lay a water drain pipeline to pump out water from the RuB till Netravati river, following which work on the approach road on Morgan's Gate side would be taken up, he said. The MSCL and the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) are to complete approach roads from the existing railway level crossing towards the twin RuBs, as the Railways would close the level crossing gate once the RuBs are commissioned. MSCL has also proposed to continue one of the two approach roads on the Moily Kere stretch till Netravati river to connect the Netravati promenade. In-charge Deputy Commissioner K. Anandh said he would instruct MSCL to complete the work on the approach roads at the earliest. Critical works over Divisional Railway Manager Arun Kumar Chaturvedi told The Hindu that the Railways has already completed all critical works, including pushing of the boxes, on its part. 'The drain line to Netravati river could be laid once the Mangaluru City Corporation shifts a water piepline in the path. It is a day's work,' he said.

Telipok water woes due to pipe bursts

Published on: Wednesday, May 28, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 28, 2025 By: Sidney Skinner Text Size: A technician welds a 'bend joint' along the leaking MSCL distribution main in Taman Puterajaya. A series of pipe bursts is to blame for the water woes which Telipok consumers, off Mile 13 Jalan Tuaran, have been experiencing for some time. The fluctuating levels at the reservoir overlooking Donggongon, on the other hand, has given rise to the erratic supply which their counterparts, living off Jalan Minintod-Bantayan in Penampang, have been receiving for over a month In view of this, the Water Department will be monitoring the supply to Taman Puterajaya and Country Heights Apartments, to try and minimise any unnecessary disruptions from occurring at both properties over the coming Harvest Festival- Agung's Birthday public holidays. A spokesman for the agency said one of its contractors was in the midst of repairing a section of a Mid-Steel-Cement-Lined (MSCL) pipe in Taman Puterajaya which sprung a leak on Tuesday. 'The emergency work on the distribution main, with a diameter of 200 millimetres, got underway from 9.30am yesterday,' he said. 'Consumers in the vicinity were notified a half an hour earlier to use what reserves they had in their storage tanks sparingly.' Advertisement This was the third such notice which the Department had issued to the public about a burst in this part of Telipok since the beginning of month. The earlier notices were issued on May 3 and May 25, according to the spokesman. 'Different parts of the same MSCL pipe which spans some 800 metres on Lorong Puterajaya 2 have become damaged in each instance. 'This has happened due to wear and tear as the main was first installed beneath the verge here years ago. 'Contrary to what some quarters may think, it is not a case of shoddy workmanship on the part of our technicians as the leaks did not happen in the same section of the supply-line.' Aside from those in the neighbourhood, the spokesman said, the repairs also affected consumers at the Apartments and Shophouses in Puterajaya area. 'Our tankers have been going around the affected properties from time to time to deliver treated water to these individuals.' Where Country Heights was concerned, the spokesman said the supply to the property had been affected by falling levels the agency's R6B reservoir. 'The diminishing volume at the Donggongon reservoir was only a temporary setback which happened for a few days last week and over the weekend,' he said. 'We managed to raise the levels somewhat this week to improve the supply to the Apartments.' A spokesman for the company, which manages Country Heights, said the property had periodically lost its main incoming supply between 10pm and 6am since April. 'Even when the supply did not disappear, the pressure was very low,' he said. 'It was only about five to 10 per cent of what it should be.' 'Owing to this, there was not enough water in our ground tanks for us to give our tenants a supply the following morning.' He said the firm generally released water for a few hours twice a day – once in the morning and then at night. 'The management has had to control the flow of water from our elevated and ground tanks to the 6,000 occupants on the property. If the supply is not controlled, then those living on the upper floors would have no chance of getting any water at all.' The spokesman said this task had become exceedingly difficult since April 17, when there had intermittently been 'zero' input to the Apartments' tanks at night. He said multiple calls had been made to the Department's Careline since then about the water woes at Country Heights. 'On May 13, we wrote to the agency about this problem. We are still waiting to receive an official response to our correspondence.' The Department spokesman said one of its technicians went to Country Heights, shortly after being contacted by the media last week. 'He found that water was reaching the bulk-meter but the pressure of the supply was low,' he said. 'A security guard for the Apartments even climbed up to a balancing tank for the property and noted that that the supply was barely entering the receptacle.' The spokesman said the agency's staff had been keeping an eye on the property since then. 'If things take a turn for the worse, we will consider sending a tanker to replenish the contents of the ground tank for the property.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? City wrestlers to get modern training facilities

Mangaluru: The long-standing request from wrestlers in the coastal city for modern wrestling facilities will soon become a reality. The Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), in collaboration with the Dakshina Kannada District Amateur Wrestling Association, has initiated the construction of two wrestling rings adjacent to Nehru Maidan. Association president Dilraj Alva said that the new wrestling rings will be a boon for wrestlers, especially talented young athletes in the district. "Though Mangaluru city has infrastructure for various sports and games, there is no state-of-the-art infrastructure to hold wrestling events here. The coastal district has contributed to the wrestling world with many of the wrestlers bagging state and national medals for the past several decades. However, wrestlers in the district lack modern wrestling rings, where district, state, and national events can be organised," Alva said. The project, estimated to cost more than Rs 1 crore, is scheduled for completion within a year, he said. "Though the project was commenced with an estimate of Rs 1 crore, it may require more funds to complete it. While primary work related to the structure has begun, the process of inviting tenders to procure foam padding, mats and other structural components is in progress. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 40대 이상이세요? 한 번 시작하면 멈출 수 없어요. 준비되셨나요? In the later phase, initiatives will be taken to develop a spectators' gallery and other facilities," he said. "Currently, wrestlers in the district receive training in traditional garadis and vyayama shales. However, to participate and win medals at national and international events, wrestlers need better infrastructure as the rules are different there. The new wrestling ring will have features that suit national and international standards, and it will provide training for budding wrestlers of the region," he said. It was freedom fighter and former MLA late M Lokayya Shetty who took initiatives to open an association for amateur wrestlers in the district many decades ago.

Panel to decide fee, maintenance for new indoor stadium

Mangaluru: With chief minister Siddaramaiah dedicating the new state-of-the-art indoor stadium at Urwa in the city, the department of youth empowerment and sports is awaiting a nod from the state to take over the facility from Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL). The indoor stadium, which meets national standards and specifically designed for badminton and kabaddi, was developed on 1.1 acres belonging to the department of youth empowerment and sports at a cost of Rs 36 crore by the MSCL. The foundation for the 1,300sqft sports complex with four floors was laid on November 2, 2021. According to officials, it may take at least a few weeks to make the new indoor stadium fully functional. Pradeep D'Souza, deputy director of the youth empowerment and sports department said that the process of handing over the stadium is under way. "A stadium committee headed by the deputy commissioner will prepare an action plan regarding future maintenance after the handover process. The MSCL has already given a letter requesting the department of youth empowerment and sports to take over the stadium. A final clearance from the department is expected soon," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Once the stadium is taken over, the department can either manage it directly by collecting necessary fees and rentals from the commercial outlets, or it can also be managed on an outsourced basis. However, a final decision in this regard will have to be taken by the govt through the department, he said. There are five exclusive courts for badminton on the third floor. Meanwhile, the ground floor has six badminton courts, which include three interchangeable kabaddi courts. While the stadium has space to park 60 four-wheelers and 100 two-wheelers, the building also has 34 commercial outlets for the purpose of generating income to meet its maintenance cost. Besides badminton and kabaddi courts, the complex also has space for an administrative office, separate washrooms and changing rooms for men and women, locker rooms, lifts, a gymnasium, dormitory facility, and cafeteria. While the first floor has a seating capacity of 400 for spectators, the same number of people can be accommodated on the fourth floor, D'Souza said.

Smart traffic signals trial faces delays and disruptions

Mangaluru: Mangaluru Smart City Limited 's (MSCL) newly implemented traffic management system at three primary junctions is experiencing glitches during its trial Ballalbagh Junction, the experimental traffic signal system resulted in significant delays, causing difficulties for drivers due to reduced vehicle movement speed. Additionally, the trial run of the new traffic signal system at other places, including the KSRTC Junction, led to traffic disruptions. Drivers of buses, autorickshaws, and other vehicles found the traffic signals at additional locations a hurdle during peak Prabha KS, general manager (technical) of the MSCL, told TOI that new traffic signals with artificial intelligence (AI) cameras were installed at around 13 junctions in the city at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore. "We completed the work on the installation of cameras and signal lamps at nearly 10 locations, where city traffic police may begin the trial run of the system. Since the project was just completed, it requires fine-tuning to solve issues. Since the entire system is AI-enabled, it will take time to regulate the traffic at the back end. Considering the traffic flow at each junction, decisions will be taken to change the timings of traffic signals. The challenges encountered during the testing phase will be resolved shortly," he cameras equipped with AI tools are in place to monitor traffic flow and detect violations effectively. The cameras will provide real-time visuals, while the AI tools will analyse the captured footage to identify and track any traffic (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar said that it may take a few days to streamline the new traffic system, which was introduced on a trial basis at an additional three locations in the city. "We will optimise the system following a thorough assessment of the current conditions. We will study the timings of the traffic flow during peak hours and rectify the initial challenges," he added.
