Mangaluru: The long delay in opening the twin railway underbridges (RUB) at Mahakalipadpu in the city is causing severe traffic snarls on the Pumpwell bypass road, the main entry point to Mangaluru city.
The Palakkad division of the Southern Railway has already completed the pushing of all the four concrete boxes. However, the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) could not complete the concrete roads on either side of the RUBs. The MSCL authorities say that the work can be started only if the Railways complete the laying of the pipeline to clear the water at the site.
A series of protests were held seeking the authorities to complete the RUB work at Mahakalipadpu ever since the road from Jeppu to Jappinamogaru was closed to facilitate the RUB work.
The Rs 50 crore 4-lane RUB project was initiated on March 29, 2021, by the then MP of Dakshina Kannada Nalin Kumar Kateel and Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath. Currently, all vehicles from Kerala, Ullal, Konaje, Mudipu, and other places enter Mangaluru city via Pumpwell bypass road, leading to traffic snarls during peak hours.
Once the RUB at Mahakalipadpu is commissioned, the traffic density on the Pumpwell bypass stretch will reduce considerably.
DYFI Dakshina Kannada district secretary Santhosh Bajal said that a lack of willpower among elected representatives is a major hindrance that leads to delays in development works. He said an action committee formed to demand completion of the RUB at Mahakalipadpu has held several protests and submitted memorandums to the authorities. "We will hold a dharna in front of the office of MSCL or Railways if the work gets delayed further," he added.
Tulunada Rakshana Vedike founder president Yogish Shetty Jeppu, who has been at the forefront of protests for the cause, called upon the public to, "Join hands and seek authorities concerned to expedite the work."
MSCL general manager (technical) Arun Prabha KS said that water accumulates at the RUB site, making it difficult to take up the development of the road. "Railways will have to lay a 300m pipeline, but they have laid only about 120m so far. We have been working at the site and will expedite the work once the pipeline laying work is completed," he added.

Pakistan Suffers Rs 1,240 Crore Loss After Airspace Ban On Indian Flights: Report

After India suspended the Indus Water Treaty on April 23 in response to the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian-registered aircraft. However, according to a local media report, Islamabad has suffered massive financial losses after the shutdown as the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) lost over Rs. 1,240 crore (PKR 4.1 billion) in over two months. According to ANI, Dawn reported the figure of losses, citing a statement by the Pakistan Ministry of Defence in the National Assembly on Friday. Furthermore, as per the report, the closure came into effect from April 24, when Islamabad withdrew overflight permission for all Indian-registered aircraft and those operated, owned, or leased by Indian carriers. The closure of airspace has backfired on the Pakistani economy. According to the Dawn, the revenue of PAA from overflying charges plunged between April 24 and June 30, nearly affecting 100-150 Indian aircraft daily and slashing Pakistan's transit air traffic by almost 20 percent. Also Read: '6 Pak Aircraft Were Downed During Operation Sindoor': Air Force Chief Pakistani Ministry Admits Financial Losses The Pakistani Defence Ministry has admitted the financial losses but attempted to justify the decision to close airspace for all Indian aircraft and said, "Sovereignty and national defence take precedence over economic considerations." Meanwhile, the officials also claimed that the measures issued by Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) were for "strategic and diplomatic" reasons. According to the ministry's data, PAA's average daily overflight revenue in 2019 was 508,000 dollars, compared to 760,000 dollars in 2025, meaning the ban is costing Pakistan far more now than during the previous standoff, Dawn reported. Pakistan Airspace Closure Pakistan's airspace is open to all except Indian airlines and aircraft, and the ban has been extended twice and is now set to last until the last week of August. Furthermore, Indian carriers continue unaffected on other international routes, while Pakistani airlines are still barred from entering Indian airspace. India-Pakistan Tensions On April 22, terrorists gunned down 25 Indian citizens and one Nepali citizen in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. The incident sent shockwaves through the nation. The responsibility for the attack was claimed The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), however, later it distanced itself from the incident. After this, New Delhi took several diplomatic measures against Islamabad, and the airspace closure was a part of the same. India banned all Pakistani-operated, owned, or leased aircraft, including military flights, from entering Indian skies from April 30.

'Project was launched under UPA govt': Priyank Kharge accuses BJP of 'hijacking' credit of Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the inauguration of Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge has accused the BJP of "hijacking" credit for the project. Kharge claimed the metro expansion was launched under the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government and that the state government had contributed more to its completion than the PM Modi-led NDA government. In a post on 'X', Kharge said: "I welcome Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to Karnataka for the inauguration of the Yellow Line Metro. As BJP desperately tries to shift the focus from #VoteChori to #CreditChori by hijacking the credit for the Yellow Line phase 2, let's set the record straight. The Metro project was launched under the UPA Government led by Dr Manmohan Singh. In the first phase, the UPA Government bore a significant portion of the cost, outpacing the State Government's contribution. "After the BJP came to power, their commitment to the project dwindled, with the Central Government's share decreasing drastically in subsequent phases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lana Green Is Retiring - Her Final Jewelry Pieces Are 80% Off Artisan Weekly Read More Undo Meanwhile, the Karnataka Government has shouldered the bulk of the expenses, contributing over Rs 12,000 crores, covering land acquisition costs and additional expenses," Kharge said. "In stark contrast, the Central Government has provided a paltry Rs 8,000 crores, effectively washing its hands of its responsibilities. This lack of support forced BMRCL to take loans to cover the remaining project costs," he added. Kharge also highlighted what he called 'inequality' between Karnataka's contributions to the national economy and the funds it receives from the centre. "While Karnataka's contributions to the Centre continue to grow year after year, the returns to the state diminish and the Metro Yellow Line project is a glaring example of this," he said. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the Yellow Line from RV Road (Ragigudda) to Bommasandra, part of Bangalore Metro Phase-2. The 19km stretch, with 16 stations, has been built at a cost of around Rs 7,160 crore. Its opening will expand Bengaluru's operational metro network to over 96km.
