Can Cardiff start another cup run?

BBC News13 hours ago
It is now 13 years since Cardiff City came close to pulling off one of the great League Cup shocks when they made it all the way to the final before losing out to Liverpool in a penalty shootout.A Bluebirds side featuring the likes Peter Whittingham, Kevin McNaughton and Aron Gunnarsson – plus goalscorers Joe Mason and Ben Turner – pushed Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Co all the way before being beaten in agonising fashion at Wembley.Cardiff begin this year's crack at what is now the Carabao Cup when they host League Two Swindon Town on Tuesday (19:45 BST).Brian Barry-Murphy's team will be keen to continue their unbeaten start to the season, even if there will be no great expectation regarding a cup run in a campaign where efforts will be focused on a potential promotion push.In truth, Cardiff have not had a great deal to shout about in the League Cup since that memorable run to the final, having made it beyond the second round on just three occasions since. In 2023-24, they overcame Colchester and Birmingham before being well beaten at Blackburn. That was the first time Cardiff had reached the third round since 2014-15, when they saw off Coventry and Port Vale before being well beaten by Bournemouth.
Cardiff's one other visit to the third round since Wembley was in 2013-14, when the then Premier League club were knocked out at West Ham having overcome Accrington Stanley after entering at the second-round stage.Cardiff's uninspiring record over the past 13 years has included several disappointing losses, including two round-one defeats to Northampton Town and a first-round exit at the hands of Bristol Rovers in 2016-17.Last year, Erol Bulut's team got past Rovers before being outplayed by Southampton in round two.The hope will be that after an encouraging opening-day win over Peterborough and last Thursday's draw at Port Vale, Cardiff can maintain momentum by getting the better of Ian Holloway's Swindon side."There was too much goalmouth action for my liking and we didn't have enough control," Barry-Murphy said in the wake of the trip to Vale Park, where Cardiff were fortunate to avoid defeat."That's great for us because it gives us a lot of areas to improve through the season."

Tottenham leave Bissouma out of Super Cup squad due to persistent lateness

Thomas Frank has flexed his muscles to Tottenham's squad by excluding Yves Bissouma from the travelling party to face Paris Saint-Germain owing to persistent lateness. Spurs make their Uefa Super Cup debut in Udine on Wednesday in a fiendish early test for their manager, who is overseeing his first pre-season since moving from Brentford in June. Frank has wasted no time pressing home his standards and explained he had opted against selecting Bissouma, the Mali international midfielder, because of multiple lapses. 'Bissouma has not travelled with the team because of disciplinary reasons,' Frank said after their arrival in north-east Italy. 'He has been late several times and the latest time was one too many. With everything you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and there also need to be consequences. This time there was a consequence for that.' Frank suggested the punishment applied only to this fixture and that he would 'follow up when I come home'. The infraction will heighten doubts over Bissouma's future. He has entered the final year of his contract with little sign a new deal is imminent and his three seasons at Tottenham have been decidedly mixed. The club suspended him from the trip to Leicester last August after he was recorded inhaling nitrous oxide and their former manager Ange Postecoglou said he 'sometimes lets the game drift by him' after the defeat by Fulham in March. Although the Super Cup sits below Uefa's three other major club competitions in terms of prestige, Frank played up the importance of following their Europa League win by toppling the Champions League holders. 'It's a massive game,' he said. 'A great challenge and an even bigger opportunity. That's how my brain works, I see opportunities instead of pressure. So for me, massive opportunity. We will definitely embrace it and we will do everything.' Spurs's squad for the coming Premier League season remains incomplete and they are trying to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace under the noses of Arsenal. Frank did not take the bait when asked about any deal for the forward. 'There are a lot of good players out there, there are also a few from the PSG team, but I don't think we can buy them right now.' he said. 'In general, players in and players out, I'm only speaking if something is done or not done.' On the brighter side, Dominic Solanke has recovered from an ankle injury that has plagued his summer and should take a place on the bench. Destiny Udogie is also available after a knee problem.

PSG 'are not unbeatable' - Davies and Vicario eye 'great things'

Paris St-Germain are not "invincible" and Tottenham are "ready to fight together" for Wednesday's Super Cup, says defender Ben Davies and goalkeeper Guglielmo get their season underway when they face Champions League winners PSG in will be the first opportunity for silverware for new boss Thomas Frank but, despite PSG losing in the Club World Cup final to Chelsea, it will still be a tough test against the French champions."It's quite clear we will be playing against one of the best teams in world football right now," Davies said."They have so much talent all across the pitch and it's definitely going to be a challenge."But, over the summer we saw that, whilst they played some incredible games, they are not unbeatable and invincible. We need to take some confidence from that and try and put our best foot forward to win the game tomorrow."Vicario, who will be playing in his home country when the sides step out at the Stadio Friuli, added: "I am one of the oldest players in the dressing room. Now is the moment to step up and to take responsibilities."I see a group of players ready to fight together. I don't want to give them any advice but we need to drive this team to the best possible version that we can achieve."We need to start doing that from tomorrow night. I think we can do great things together."

Revealed: Man United to open mega pop-up PUB at Old Trafford which can hold over a THOUSAND fans - and it will be open on time for the first game of the season against Arsenal!

Manchester United are to open a 'pop-up pub' at Old Trafford. Officials will unveil vast, 900 square metre-marquee behind the Stretford End in time for their first match of the season on Sunday against Arsenal. The new addition will have room for 1,000 supporters, and be viewed as a form of 'fan village' at Old Trafford. Starting from this weekend's Arsenal season-opener, the new addition will be free to enter and will open three hours before the match starts. The move is aimed at bringing fans to the stadium early and helping to generate and atmosphere in the build up to kick-off. United also believe it will provide an opportunity for local businesses. Manchester-based brewer Shindigger, will provide the beer while food will be supplied by city-centre-based eaterie Yard and Coop. Around 1,000 fans will be able to fit in the gigantic watering hole at Old Trafford from Sunday There will be a fast-pour system via units which can fill a pint in 10 seconds, music from local bands - and for the Arsenal game Denis Irwin will be the first club legend in attendance. Club partners Estée Lauder and Cadbury will provide giveaways, while fans can hang their flags on the marquee wall. The idea came from a consultation with supporters, who said they wanted more to see and do around Old Trafford. Should the pop-up be successful, it could see its stay extended. United are reluctant to spend big on new infrastructure at their current home given they hope to a new stadium in the next five years. However, officials believe the marquee could become popular and satisfy what they see as an immediate need.
