AI literacy must for teachers to ensure good use of tools by students: panel

While the deep penetration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in India is a serious concern, it could be turned into an opportunity with structured sensitisation and training programmes for both teachers and users, speakers at a panel discussion said on Monday.
A way forward would be AI literacy for teachers to ensure good use of AI in educational institutions, including schools. There need to be clear guidelines developed by academics on what these tools can be used for and these guidelines should be continuously monitored, the panelists stressed.
The discussion was the first of a series of dialogues started by Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE), titled Uyarkalvi Uraiyadalgal, and the topic was 'Impact of Generative AI on the Future of Education and Employment'.
Gayathri Devi Jayan, Indian Chapter President, Applied AI Association, said that children in the education system should be thinking more laterally rather than following a pattern. 'AI follows patterns. We are not AI, we are humans. How do we bring that into the curriculum should be the point of discussion,' she stressed.

Ravindran, Head, Department of Data Science and AI, and Head, Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, IIT Madras, said that popular LLMs (Large Language Models) have recorded significant biases in their responses. For example, when prompted about higher education opportunities in India, 'almost 80 % of the recommendations are asking you to go to the US or to Europe; they don't recommend higher study institutions in India even though the student is asking [about] India'. There was a need to step back and think about what could be responsible use of AI in the Indian context.
V. Ravindran, Director, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, said that AI was a sophisticated tool that mimics our brain and awareness on what it is and how it works should be brought to children at school level because, if used wrongly, their cognitive skills could be hampered and interpersonal relations and emotions can be affected.
Industry, too, was incentivising the use of minimal resources to maximise output and, therefore, the right mix of human expertise and AI tools are required to optimise operations, said Dhinakaran Vinayagamurthy, Lead, Quantum Innovation Centre, IBM Quantum India. Data bias and quality of output in AI models, he added, was much more of a serious concern in the industry.
Earlier, inaugurating the discussion series, Govi. Chezhiaan, Higher Education Minister, said that for the first time in decades, the State government this fiscal allocated Rs. 60 crore for refurbishing laboratories in higher education institutions strengthening the foundations for development of Tamil Nadu. Besides, two basic science research centres are coming in Chennai and Coimbatore at a cost of Rs. 100 crores.
Delivering the keynote address, Lakshmi Narayanan, Managing Trustee, Chennai Mathematical Institute, said that based on the available data, there was a case to demand more investment in higher education from the State government.
M.P. Vijayakumar, Vice-President, TANSCHE, said that in addition to the labs and the research centres, a science park would be built on East Coast Road at a cost of Rs. 100 crore and two STEM laboratories would be established in Madurai and Coimbatore at a cost of Rs. 10 crore each.

In April, Alphabet said it was still committed to spending some $75 billion this year to build data centre capacity despite the economic uncertainty resulting from U.S. President Donald Trump's global tariff offensive. Alphabet did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Andhra Pradesh's information technology minister Nara Lokesh, who is in Singapore to discuss investments with thegovernment and business leaders there, did not comment on the Google investment. "We've made certain announcements like Sify, which are public," he said, referring to a 550-MW data centre Sify Technologies plans to build in the state. "There are certain announcements which are not yet public. In October, we will make those announcements." STATE'S POST-SPLIT INVESTMENT DRIVE Andhra Pradesh, a state run by a leading ally of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was split into two in 2014, losing its former capital Hyderabad and a major revenue source to the newly created Telangana state. Andhra Pradesh has since been looking to attract investments to ease the financial strains of high debt and social spending. Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh has already been able to finalise investments in data centres with total capacity of 1.6 GW, adding that it aims to build 6 GW of data centres over the next five years from nearly zero currently. He expects the initial 1.6 GW of already agreed data centres to be operational in the next 24 months. That would be more than the 1.4 GW currently in operation in the entire country, according to real estate consultancy Anarock. "We're also working on getting three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam. We want to create enough of cable network, which will be two times what Mumbai has today," Lokesh said. Cable landing stations - typically located close to data centres requiring fast and reliable connections to global networks - are used to store equipment which receives and relays data from undersea cables. Lokesh also said the state was looking to build up energy infrastructure to meet sustainability requirements of data centres. He said he anticipated power generation capacity requirements of as much as 10 GW from the electricity-intensive industry over the next five years. "Majority will end up being actually green energy, and that's the unique value proposition that we bring to the table," he said. Some of the additional capacity will be coal-fired, however, as data centres require reliable, high volume power throughout the day, he added.

New Delhi: India is set to host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026, reinforcing its commitment to democratising Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the public good, the Parliament was informed on Wednesday. This landmark event aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making technology accessible to all and leveraging AI to tackle real-world challenges across healthcare, education, agriculture, climate, and governance, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told the Lok Sabha. The IndiaAI mission, which prioritises accountability, safety, equity, and the defence of privacy and human rights, is at the core of India's AI strategy. According to the statement, one of the main highlights is the creation of native Large and Small Language Models using Indian datasets. Currently, startups such as Sarvam AI, Soket AI, Gnani AI, and Gan AI are developing foundational models that are suited to the linguistic and cultural diversity of India. According to the statement, these models will be open-source, allowing other startups to create locally tailored applications. According to Minister Vaishnaw, to support scalable innovation, the government is also enhancing AI compute capacity by ensuring GPU infrastructure access and expanding the AIKosh Datasets Platform, which currently hosts over 1,000 datasets and 208 AI models, including Text-to-Speech tools in Indian languages. Additionally, the mission is funding 30 AI-based applications addressing public interest areas like health, climate, and governance. Through its IndiaAI Startups Global Programme, 10 startups are being mentored at Station F and HEC Paris, including PrivaSapien Technologies (privacy-enhancing AI) and Secure Blink (AI cybersecurity). Ensuring safe and trusted AI, India has established the IndiaAI Safety Institute to coordinate efforts on responsible AI. Projects under this initiative include AI bias mitigation, machine unlearning, and watermarking, as per the statement A strong legal framework that addresses AI-related risks like disinformation, deepfakes, and data misuse, such as the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (2023), IT Act (2000), and IT Rules (2021), supports the tech initiatives. A techno-legal approach underpins India's regulation, combining legislation with government-funded R&D on deepfake detection, privacy, and cybersecurity tools, according to the written reply. India's hosting of the 2026 summit further solidifies its position as a global leader in the development of AI that is inclusive, moral, and driven by innovation.
