The ageless Gael Monfils will return to the Auckland Classic in January to defend his title, a year after becoming the oldest player to win an ATP Tour crown.
The flamboyant Frenchman, who turns 39 next month, beat Belgian Zizou Bergs in the 2025 final, making him the oldest player to win a tour-level title since Ken Rosewall triumphed in Hong Kong aged 43 in 1977.
Monfils, a 13-time ATP champion and former world number six, is the first player confirmed for the 2026 tournament, organisers said on Tuesday.
"I love the game. I love to compete," Monfils said in a statement.
"This title means a lot to me. It was definitely a week I will not forget."
The tennis showman remains a huge crowd drawcard, capable of pulling off big wins in his inimitable style.

NDP 2026 to be held at National Stadium to accommodate more Singaporeans

SINGAPORE - The National Day Parade (NDP) in 2026 will be held at the National Stadium, Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing said on Aug 19. This means that more Singaporeans will be able to watch the parade, as the 55,000-seat stadium has a larger capacity than the Padang, which can accommodate 27,000 spectators. The NDP was last held at the new National Stadium in 2016 - the only time it was held there. It will also commemorate 50 years since the NDP was first held at the old National Stadium, said the Ministry of Defence (Mindef). To mark Singapore's 60th year of independence in 2025, some 27,000 people attended the National Day Parade at the Padang on Aug 9, while another 200,000 enjoyed the extended celebrations at Marina Bay . In July 2022, Mr Ng Eng Hen, who was Defence Minister then, hinted that future NDPs could be held at the National Stadium . Mr Chan, who was speaking at an NDP 2025 appreciation function held at the Surbana Jurong Campus in Cleantech Loop on Aug 19, said: 'We were last there almost 10 years back... Next year, we will try something new.' Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'I invite all of us here to contribute ideas on how we can make the SG61 NDP at the Sports Hub a special and meaningful experience for everyone.' During the appreciation function, Mr Chan gave out awards to 148 principal partners and 33 gold award recipients for their contributions to NDP 2025. Chief of Defence Force, Vice-Admiral Aaron Beng, handed out 400 other awards at the function. In his speech, Mr Chan, who is also the Coordinating Minister for Public Services, thanked the many volunteers and participants who put NDP 2025 together. Noting that many marvelled at how the parade came together, he said: 'At every rehearsal (show), there are perhaps 27,000 audience members, but behind the 27,000... there are many more - tens of thousands of people behind the scenes - from the sponsors to the logistics team, to the traffic marshals, to the people in command and control centres, making sure that everything goes on like clockwork.' He added that the NDP is also a powerful statement of the values that Singaporeans hold dear. Noting that parade organisers will try to present something new each time, Mr Chan said this signals to the world that 'we are a people who are constantly striving for innovation, for excellence'. The countless rehearsals done by the performers and participants before the shows are also a reflection of a people who persevere, he said. 'I received a lot of congratulatory messages every year, after the rehearsal and after the actual NDP, and my humble answer to everyone was 'thank you very much (and) we will improve next year', because that's the standard that we set (for) ourselves.' Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing speaking at the appreciation function on Aug 19. 'We were prepared to present everyday, ordinary Singaporeans coming together to do extraordinary things.'

Morecambe appoint Johal as first Sikh professional manager in England

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON - Ashvir Singh Johal has become the first Sikh to coach a professional club in England after being named as first-team manager at fifth-tier Morecambe on Tuesday. The 30-year-old is also the youngest manager in the top-five tiers of English soccer. "He arrives at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium with an excellent reputation as a forward thinking coach and leader, bringing a wealth of experience in player development, tactical innovation, and building high-performance cultures," the club said. "His appointment marks an exciting new era for the Shrimps as the Club continues its journey under fresh ownership and renewed ambition." Johal, who worked at Leicester City's academy for 10 years and was part of Kolo Toure's coaching team at Wigan Athletic in the Championship in 2022, replaces Derek Adams who left the club following the takeover by the Panjab Warriors consortium. The club is yet to play a game in the National League this season after being suspended because of its failure to meet financial obligations, including failing to pay staff and uncertainty about the ownership. Following the completion of the sale of the club by the Bond Group to London-based Panjab Warriors, that suspension has been lifted, meaning Johal can begin the task of trying to reverse the decline in the seaside town club's fortunes. All Blacks lock Tuipulotu all but ruled out of Rugby Championship with facial fracture

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox New Zealand lock Patrick Tuipulotu may not play another test in the Rugby Championship after suffering a facial fracture against Argentina while centre Anton Lienert-Brown is out of the second Pumas match after failing concussion protocols. Tuipulotu was taken to hospital after the All Blacks' 41-24 win last Saturday and will need surgery on his return to New Zealand. The 32-year-old is expected to need six weeks to recover after surgery, leaving him scrambling to be fit for the last Rugby Championship test against Australia in Perth on Oct. 4. Lienert-Brown will join him on the plane home after failing a head injury assessment, New Zealand Rugby said in a statement on Tuesday. The veteran centre earned a yellow card after a late clash of heads with Santiago Chocobares in Cordoba. Robertson's squad has cover in both positions, with Josh Lord a potential replacement at lock and former Fiji under-20 player Timoci Tavatavanawai a midfield option. Robertson said loose forward Wallace Sititi and prop Tamaiti Williams should be available for Saturday's second test in Buenos Aires after missing the Cordoba opener and the entire France series due to leg injuries. With a few uncapped players in the squad including halfback Kyle Preston and flanker Simon Parker, Robertson suggested more changes may be on the table to build depth. "Some guys need football and they need to play together to get high cohesion," said Robertson. "You need to give guys opportunities to build depth for now and this rugby cycle." REUTERS
