Overnight attack: Ukraine foils nearly 480 Russian drones, missiles
Shafaq News/ Ukraine's military intercepted or disabled nearly 480 aerial threats on Monday during one of the largest Russian air assaults since the war began in February 2022. Ukraine's General Staff reported that Russian forces launched 499 aerial weapons overnight from multiple locations, including Kursk, Oryol, Shatalovo, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk. The attack featured 479 Shahed drones and decoys, along with a range of missiles: four Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles from Tambov, 10 Kh-101 cruise missiles from Saratov, three Kh-22s, two Kh-31P anti-radiation missiles, and one Kh-35 from Crimea. By mid-morning, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down 292 targets and jammed another 187. The tally included 277 drones destroyed, 183 disrupted by electronic warfare, 10 Kh-101s neutralized, and four Kinzhals intercepted. The military described the strike as part of Russia's escalating 'aerial saturation' tactic designed to overwhelm air defenses and cripple infrastructure. Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its forces downed 49 Ukrainian drones over seven regions, including Voronezh, Kursk, and Bryansk. In Voronezh, falling debris sparked fires that damaged a gas pipeline and a residential building. Governor Alexander Gusev confirmed the blazes were contained. Two additional drones struck the JSC VNIIR-Progress facility in the Chuvash Republic, leading to a temporary shutdown. Drone activity was also reported in nearby farmland. Authorities briefly closed airspace over airports in Kazan, Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod, and Tambov.

Ukrainian drone attacks force Moscow airport closures
Shafaq News/ A wave of Ukrainian drone attacks disrupted air traffic and triggered emergency responses across several Russian regions, including the capital Moscow, Russian authorities said on Sunday. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that Russian air defenses downed nine drones approaching the city by 0400 GMT. While no significant damage was reported, emergency teams were deployed to areas where drone debris had fallen. The strikes forced the temporary closure of two of Moscow's main airports—Vnukovo and Domodedovo—as a precautionary measure, according to Russia's Civil Aviation Authority, Rosaviatsia. Further south, in the Tula region, another drone attack ignited a brief fire at the Azot chemical plant, injuring two people. In the neighboring Kaluga region, seven additional drones were intercepted and destroyed. Russia and Ukraine have increased their attacks in recent weeks amid renewed diplomatic contact to peace talks for the first time since the early phase of the war that began in February 2022.

Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange delayed
Shafaq News/ On Saturday, the largest prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine collapsed, with both sides trading accusations over the sudden delay. Russia blamed Ukraine for postponing the exchange at the last minute, claiming it had already begun a large-scale humanitarian operation to repatriate the remains of more than 6,000 Ukrainian servicemen. Lieutenant General Aleksandr Zorin, a member of Russia's negotiation team, revealed that the exchange was arranged under an "everyone-for-everyone" formula, covering wounded and seriously ill prisoners as well as those under the age of 25, adding that Moscow had provided Kyiv with a list of 640 prisoners for return and was prepared to proceed 'in accordance with agreements reached in Istanbul on June 2.' The Russian Defense Ministry also released footage on Telegram showing sealed body bags inside refrigerated trucks, which officials said contained the remains of Ukrainian soldiers. However, Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War rejected Moscow's version of events, saying no date had been agreed for the handover of bodies and that the processes of prisoner exchange and repatriation were separate. The collapse of the planned prisoner exchange came amid a surge in Russian aerial attacks across Ukraine, including a massive overnight bombardment that killed at least six people and wounded over 60.
