Russia was a strong backer of ousted President Bashar al-Assad. Mikhail Bogdanov 'relieved of duties' as Russian deputy foreign minister

Russian deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who also served as Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's special representative to the Middle East and to Africa, was relieved of his duties on Wednesday at his own request, TASS news agency said. Bogdanov's departure, announced in a presidential decree, took place entirely at his own request for personal reasons, TASS quoted a source as saying. Bogdanov, 74, graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1974 in the Soviet era and immediately embarked on a diplomatic career as a regional specialist that took him to numerous capitals. He served as Russian ambassador to Israel from 1997-2002 and ambassador to Egypt from 2005 to 2011. Under Putin, he served as special presidential representative to the Middle East from 2012, and as special representative to Africa from 2014.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has removed Mikhail Bogdanov from his role as Deputy Foreign Minister and relieved him of his duties as special presidential envoy to the Middle East and North Africa at his own request, Russia 's state RIA news agency reported. Mr Bogdanov's departure was announced in a presidential decree, effective immediately. The 73-year-old said it was due to retirement. Mr Bogdanov began his career in 1974. He became Deputy Foreign Minister in June 2011 and was appointed special presidential envoy to the Mena region in October 2014. Over the years, he oversaw Russia's relations with the Middle East and Africa, the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation and other international Muslim organisations, co-operation with Russian Muslim organisations, as well as issues pertaining to the Middle East peace process. He held various diplomatic posts in embassies in the Middle East, including in Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel and Syria.
