Candy bars, soda and… kayaks? New Virginia Beach vending machines sell something more.
Some vending machines in Virginia Beach parks are dispensing something more than snacks and drinks after the addition of a new kayak vending machine at Stumpy Lake Natural Area.
Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation installed new kayak rental kiosks last year at Munden Point Park and the Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area last year, and their popularity spurred installation of a new and bigger vending machine at Stumpy Lake.
The city has 12 kayaks available for rental at Stumpy Lake's vending machine, and Munden Point Park and Lake Lawson/Lake Smith each have eight kayaks. The rentals include a single-rider kayak, life jacket and paddle for $25 for up to two hours and $15 for each hour after that. A season pass costs $99.
Tyler Deem records on the 'Rent.Fun' app that he has returned the kayak he rented from the Kayak Kiosk at Stumpy Lake Natural Area in Virginia Beach Friday, June 20, 2025. The app controls payment and the locking mechanism to access the kayaks. Renters use a rent.fun smartphone app and scan a QR code on any container with a kayak inside. The rental also includes a set of wheels to help get the kayak to the water.
The rent.fun website lists more than 100 vending-machine locations, but only a handful in Virginia and Hampton Roads. Suffolk has kayak rental machines at Constance Wharf and Sleepy Hole Park, and Smithfield's Windsor Castle Park and York County's Back Creek Park also have a machine.
In Virginia Beach, the vending machines — which cost about $100,000 for all three locations — replaced a cumbersome rental process.
'We used to have rentals at Munden Point, but that became very staff-intensive and required cash handling measures,' city spokesperson Ali Weatherton said in an email. 'We also had a third-party contract with a local company at Stumpy Lake Natural Area. That was awarded through the competitive bid process. That proved to be inconsistent. Parks and Recreation then decided to investigate the rental kiosks and found them to suit all the rental needs for multiple locations.'
The vending machines have been a hit.
Nearly 900 kayaks have been rented at Munden Point and Lake Lawson/Lake Smith since the installation in April 2024. The new kiosk at Stumpy Lake has rented more than 500 in the past three months.
And more kayaks are coming: There are more to come to Virginia Beach: A new vending machine is planned when the Bow Creek Stormwater Park is completed in 2026 or '27.

HR Exec Who Was Seen Wrapped in CEO's Arms in Viral Coldplay Video Remains in Role as Company Moves Forward
While Astronomer CEO Andy Byron resigned over the weekend after he was seen wrapping his arms around one of his female executives at a concert, she appears to still be with the company as new leadership is vowing to move forward. Kristin Cabot, Astronomer's chief people officer, was caught in the now-infamous clip with Byron in the audience at a Coldplay show in Massachusetts last week. Their unusual reaction — she quickly turned her back to the so-called "kiss cam" and he ducked out of sight — led Martin to joke that 'either they're having an affair or they're just very shy.' Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Both Byron and Cabot are reportedly married; neither has spoken publicly about the nature of their relationship. As of Wednesday, July 23, Cabot is still listed on the company website in her role as chief people officer, though Byron has been removed. (Efforts to reach her for comment have been unsuccessful.) An Astronomer spokesman previously said that "no other employees were in the video." The entire imbroglio spawned countless memes and mockery and put a national spotlight, for a few days, on the former colleagues. Many online purported to dig up and share personal details about both of their families. The controversy was also the subject of much discussion about the nature of privacy in a digital age and what behavior should and shouldn't subject someone to public scrutiny. In a press release in November announcing Cabot's hiring at Astronomer, Byron was quoted as saying her 'exceptional leadership and deep expertise in talent management, employee engagement, and scaling people strategies will be critical as we continue our rapid trajectory. She is a proven leader.' In a statement after Byron stepped down titled "Moving Forward at Astronomer," his replacement, Pete DeJoy, acknowledged that 'the events of the past few days have received a level of media attention that few companies—let alone startups in our small corner of the data and AI world—ever encounter." All of the attention had been 'unusual and surreal for our team,' DeJoy said, 'and, while I would never have wished for it to happen like this, Astronomer is now a household name." Jessica Simpson Seems to Detail the Demise of Marriage to Ex-Husband Eric Johnson in New Song Lyrics
Jessica Simpson is seemingly hinting at the demise of her marriage to Eric Johnson in a new song. On Tuesday, July 22, the star shared her latest single "Fade" — her first single since the release of Nashville Canyon, Pt. 1, her first EP in 15 years — which appears to be a nod to the end of her marriage to the former NFL player, 45. "You can always say you love me / That doesn't mean that I feel loved / There's a green light in the distance / And all your words become too much / Well I won't repeat this history / The kind I've seen times before / Here's the part, I should say I miss you / But I think you'll miss me more," she croons on the soulful rock track. Simpson, 45, later notes that her lover is "as empty as your promise" and tells them to "go sleep alone in the bed you made." The "Breadcrumbs" artist later notes that she wants her heart "to feel held safe." "I know that home is a feeling / And not a place / Oh, there won't be a next time / Cause I won't break," Simpson sings. On July 23, Simpson performed "Fade" — along with several new and old songs over the course of four hours — as a part of the Today show's Citi Concert Series. 'How does it feel back on the stage, the first release in 15 years?' NBC correspondent Peter Alexander asked the fashion designer on stage. 'It's insane. And of course I had a malfunction here and everywhere, but it's okay,' said Simpson, who donned a pink corset dress with feathered fringe skirt and a silver sparkly jacket. 'I think my boobs stayed in, so it's okay.' One week prior to the release of "Fade," Simpson teased the track on Instagram. "I was in a rough place when the day came around for this writing session, however I was not going to crawl under my sheets, hide, and cry," she captioned the post. "Instead, I chose to rise and shine. It immediately encouraged confrontation to heal a layer of pain. You can pre-save #FADE now using the link in bio, OUT 7/22!" In January, Simpson and Johnson announced their separation. "Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage," she told PEOPLE in a statement at the time. In November 2024, Johnson was spotted without his wedding ring, and a source told PEOPLE that the couple "very much live separate lives." The former couple initially met in 2010 and tied the knot in 2014. They've since welcomed three children: Maxwell Drew, 13, Birdie Mae, 5, and Ace Knute, 12. Read the original article on People

David Geffen sued by estranged husband
David Geffen is being sued by his estranged husband, Donovan Michaels, for breach of contract. The billionaire and former record executive, who is 82, has allegedly reneged on his promise to provide "lifelong support" to the 32-year-old dancer, who also goes by the name David Armstrong. The news comes amid their ongoing divorce, according to court documents filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court. According to the complaint, reported by People magazine, Michaels is claiming that Geffen is in "breach of express oral contract" and "breach of implied contract" for denying him "full financial support" after the two separated in April this year. "In addition to evicting Michaels, Geffen also cut him off from his status quo financial support," Michaels' lawyers allege in the complaint. In a statement shared with People, Geffen's lawyer Patty Glaser claimed that "there was no contract, express, written, oral, or implied, that has ever existed." "We will be vigorously and righteously defending against this false, pathetic lawsuit," she added. Geffen filed for divorce from Michaels in May after less than two years of marriage. The couple did not sign a prenup before marrying in March 2023. Geffen co-founded Asylum Records in 1971 and co-founded DreamWorks Records in 1996. He is now retired, and Forbes has reported that his net worth is around $8.7 billion (£6.4 billion).
