Zomato shuts 15-minute food delivery service ‘Quick' four months after launch, confirms CEO Deepinder Goyal in Q4 report

Mint01-05-2025

Zomato announced its January-March quarter results for fiscal 2024-25 (Q4FY25) on Thursday, May 1, and informed it's shareholders that the leading food delivery giant will shut down it's 15-minute food delivery service 'Quick' and Zomato Everyday. Zomato 'Quick' was launched just four months ago.
Responding to a question on Zomato 'Quick' and Zomato Everyday services, Zomato chief executive officer (CEO) Deepinder Goyal said in a letter to shareholders today, 'We are actually shutting down both these initiatives as we are not seeing the path to profitability in these without compromising on customer experience. The current restaurant density and kitchen infrastructure is not set up for delivering orders in 10 minutes which leads to inconsistent customer experience.'
Zomato 'Quick', 'Everyday' shuts down
As a result, Zomato did not see any incrementality in demand while it ran Quick as an experiment for a few months. With Everyday, the food delivery giant realized that the need for homely-meals is a limited use case largely for oce locations in metros. 'We did not see enough ROI by keeping it running at a small scale," confirmed Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal.
Zomato Everyday was a quick food delivery option that appeared on Zomato's explore page on the app, offering ready-to-eat, homely meals from select restaurants located within a two-kilometre radius. The option, however, is no longer visible.
This was Zomato's second attempt to crack the quick food delivery market. Its earlier service– Zomato Instant, launched in 2022 – promised 10-minute deliveries in Bengaluru and Delhi-NCR but was shut down by January 2023.
Eternal, which owns the Zomato and Blinkit brands, on Thursday reported a consolidated net profit of ₹ 39 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2025.
The company, which rebranded itself as Eternal in March, had posted a net profit of ₹ 175 crore in the year-ago period.
The company in a regulatory filing said that the results for the quarter and year ended March 31, 2025, along with the December-end quarter, are not comparable with other periods.
The Deepinder Goyal-led firm's revenue from operations in the January-March quarter was at ₹ 5,833 crore. In the year-ago period it stood at ₹ 3,562 crore, the filing showed.
However, during the quarter under review, Eternal's total expenses stood at ₹ 6,104 crore.
Eternal witnessed a widening of losses in the quick commerce business Blinkit, the regulatory filing showed.
The revenue reporting segments for the Group include India food ordering and delivery; Hyperpure supplies (B2B business); Blinkit (quick commerce); District (dining out and restaurant; and all other segments (residual).

IMF Team Makes First Syria Visit Since 2009

An IMF team visited Syria for the first time since 2009 to take part in efforts to rebuild the economy after years of civil war and the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the lender said Tuesday. The International Monetary Fund's trip to Damascus took place from June 1 to June 5, and its team sought to discuss authorities' priorities and how to help achieve them. Syria's economy and the country are a wreck after 14 years of war under Assad, who was ousted in December. "Syria faces enormous challenges following years of conflict that caused immense human suffering and reduced its economy to a fraction of its former size," said Ron van Rooden, who led the visit. Around six million people have fled the country while another seven million have been displaced internally, he noted. "Output has plummeted, real incomes have fallen sharply, and poverty rates are high," he said, adding that state institutions have also been weakened with much infrastructure destroyed. "There is great urgency to address these challenges and achieve a sustainable economic recovery," van Rooden said in a statement at the end of the mission. Much of Syria's infrastructure has been destroyed by the war, which began with a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests. Longtime strongman Assad was ousted in a lightning offensive by Islamist-led rebels in December, and Syria's new government has sought to rebuild diplomatic ties, including with international financial institutions. Last month, the IMF said it had held useful discussions with Syria's economic team. The Fund's last comprehensive review of the health of the Syrian economy was done in 2009, before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. In April, Saudi Arabia and Qatar announced that they would settle Syria's debt to the World Bank totaling about $15 million. The World Bank suspended operations in Syria when the war began. The settlement of its arrears will allow it to resume accessing the bank's financial support and technical advice.

MMRDA seeks stay, HC: Deposit Metro 1 1,169cr arbitral award

Mumbai: Bombay HC on Tuesday directed MMRDA to deposit by July 15 Rs 1,169 crore awarded by a three-member arbitral tribunal in 2023 to Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), a special purpose vehicle operating the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro line 1 in which Anil Ambani-led Reliance Infrastructure holds majority stake. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It said the dispute would be fully examined at the final hearing but MMOPL's win in arbitration could not be rendered meaningless in the interim. Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan held that MMRDA failed to make a prima facie case for a stay without deposit. The tribunal had in Aug 2023 awarded Rs 992 crore to MMOPL as compensation for cost escalation and other contractual disputes. With interest accrued till May 31 this year, the sum rose to Rs 1,169 crore. MMRDA had sought an unconditional stay on the award, challenging it under Section 34 of Arbitration and Conciliation Act. It argued that the award was illegal and based on flawed assumptions about rent recovery, project delays and cost escalation. In response, MMOPL said MMRDA had approved key decisions and was now trying to backtrack from them. HC said the award, passed by a 2:1 majority, is in the nature of a money decree and that MMRDA, being a 26% equity holder in MMOPL, was actively involved in the project's financial decision-making. "The award cannot be termed perverse or arbitrary on the face of it," it said. The court made it clear that the amended arbitration law does not permit automatic stays and rejected MMRDA's request to avoid paying the deposit. The matter will be heard next on June 17. An official said MMRDA is yet to get a copy of the HC order. "MMRDA will thoroughly examine the order and take appropriate action."
