British boy, 14, dies in skiing accident
A 14-year-old British boy has died in a skiing accident after veering off slopes and crashing into a tree, police said.
Although the boy was wearing a helmet, paramedics' efforts to revive him for a half an hour were unsuccessful as he had sustained a traumatic chest injury, according to Italian media reports.
His parents were on the scene as medics with a defibrillator battled to save the boy's life for at least 30 minutes, local media reported.
According to witnesses, the teen was skiing on the Falzarego intermediate red run, a 15-minute descent from 2,732 metres to 2,105 metres for about 3.5km from Lagazuoi toward Col Gallina.
He picked up considerable speed and went into a dip, which propelled him with additional momentum, witnesses said, causing him to lose control and crash into a tree on the side of the run.
'It was very bad luck,' Francesco Cataldo Giorgi, vice president of the Happy Ski school in Cortina told the Corriere del Veneto.
'If he had fallen a few metres before or after nothing would have happened. Unfortunately in this sport, all it takes is one fall in the wrong place and you can lose your life. We have to be careful.'
The family was on a half-term holiday in the Bolzano area with two other families and members of the group had just been starting the day of skiing when the accident occurred at 9.30am.
A medical and psychological support team are assisting the parents, who witnessed the drama and are now working to bring their son's body back to the UK.
Investigators are trying to determine if there were any obstacles or unusual features on the run that might have contributed to the accident.

She said: 'Asolo-Ogugua was reckless and utterly selfish to get behind the wheel of a bus after consuming drugs and put many lives at risk that day. 'His actions have robbed a young girl of her entire life. Our thoughts remain with Ada's family and friends as they try to come to terms with their unimaginable loss.' Ada, a Turkish-British national, lived in Bexleyheath with her family and was a keen gymnast and swimmer. She attended a local primary school where she was described by police as a 'popular and happy pupil'. Her organs were donated and she went on to help six other people after her death, her family said previously. Detective Sergeant Sam Miles said: 'Asolo-Ogugua will have to spend the rest of his life regretting the night he chose to stay awake before getting behind the wheel of a bus with cannabis in his system. 'It's a night that has cost him his freedom and snatched away the life of an innocent little girl. 'Ada had her whole life ahead of her.' Asolo-Ogugua was disqualified from driving for seven years.

Teenager jailed in Dubai for family holiday romance appeals to Sheikh for pardon
A British teenager has asked Dubai's ruler for a pardon after he was jailedover a holiday romance. Marcus Fakana, from Tottenham, north London has formally submitted a plea for clemency to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The now 19-year-old was sentenced to one year in prison in UAE last year following a short romantic relationship in which he had sex with a 17-year-old British girl. Both his family and the girl's family were on holiday in the middle eastern country at the time. The relationship between them was consensual but it's illegal to have sex with anyone under 18 in Dubai. Marcus, who has spent several months in Al Awir Prison, hopes the Sheikh will offer a humanitarian pardon, so he can return home before his sentence is due to end, reports NeedToKnow. 'This has been the most traumatic and life-altering experience imaginable for Marcus,' said Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai, which is supporting the teen's family. 'He is barely an adult himself and never intended to break any law. 'What happened was legal in the UK and consensual. 'But now he is facing permanent damage to his mental health and future prospects because of it.' Conditions at the prison are said to be taking a toll on Marcus, who is thought to have limited contact with his family. The mother of the girl he had a relationship with reported him to Dubai police after she and her family had returned to the UK and she saw pictures of the pair and chats between them. The then 18-year-old and his family were still in Dubai at the time and police arrested him at their hotel. His parents have made repeated appeals to David Lammy MP, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. They have also asked the British Embassy in Dubai to help secure his release. Ms Stirling said: 'If Marcus could go back in time, he would. 'He has shown remorse and fully respects the laws of the UAE. 'He only hopes the government will show compassion and allow him to return home to rebuild his life. 'He's very young and this is a heartbreaking way to begin adulthood.' The family is urging the British public and authorities to back their plea for clemency. Ms Stirling warned other parents to be aware of the risks young Britons face in countries with very different legal systems. She said: 'Parents need to be aware that teens can be charged in the UAE for behaviour that would not be considered criminal at home.
