Man swept away after falling into overflowing drain

Time of India12-07-2025
Lucknow: A 32-year-old man fell in an overflowing drain and was swept away in Thakurganj on Saturday morning, sparking anger and protests from residents who alleged negligence by civic authorities.
Despite hours of rescue operations by NDRF, SDRF, and Suez India teams, the man could not be traced till late evening. The incident took place around 7am when Suresh, a father of three who runs a paan shop, was heading to work. His wife, Renu, said he slipped on a broken slab covering the drain and was quickly swept away by the gushing rainwater.
Locals claimed that they alerted the authorities immediately, but the police arrived nearly two hours after the incident, and the municipal corporation team showed up after three hours.
Residents blocked the road in protest, demanding immediate action and accountability. Suresh's wife said the family had complained twice about the broken slab earlier, but no repairs were made. "We paid from our own pocket to construct a part of the drain in front of our house," she said.
Chief engineer Mahesh Chandra Verma said that teams of LMC, SDRF, and police were deployed as soon as the authorities came to know about the incident.

SDRF commandant Satish Kumar said that a 15-member team was deployed to assist in rescue operation. "The operation is ongoing for over 12 hours, but unfortunately, the man is still missing," he said.
Kumar added that SDRF unit was leading deep-tracing and access operations in narrower and risk-prone sections of the drain.

Drone misuse will attract stern action: UP CM

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday issued a stern warning against the misuse of drones in public spaces and said that people trying to spread panic or misinformation through such activities will face legal consequences, including action under the Gangsters Act and the National Security Act (NSA). Calling drone-related mischief a potential threat to public order, the CM said, "Any attempt to incite fear or spread rumours using drones will not be tolerated. The govt will deal strictly with such elements." The CM's statement comes amid growing concerns over unauthorised drone activity in various districts. He said that operating drones without official permission is strictly prohibited, and any violation would result in harsh punitive action. He asked the principal secretary (home) and the director general of police (DGP) to conduct a comprehensive review of drone-related activities and initiate immediate action in case of misuse of drones. He also ordered the implementation of a statewide drone monitoring system to ensure real-time surveillance and rapid response. "District-level law enforcement agencies must increase patrolling and maintain public trust by actively deterring the misuse of aerial surveillance technology," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Yogi asserted that the govt supported the positive use of emerging technologies but would not hesitate to crack down on its malicious or unlawful use. "Technology should be used for innovation and development—not to threaten public peace or manipulate law and order. Anyone trying to destabilise the system through tech-driven intimidation will face the full force of the law," he said. "By tightening legal provisions and enhancing monitoring mechanisms, the state aims to create a deterrent against drone-related crimes, while assuring the public that law and order will not be compromised," a govt spokesperson said. Housing societies cautioned against fake tenant registration documents; QR code verification soon

Pune: With a spike in fake, tampered, or unregistered tenant registration documents being submitted to housing societies, the Association of Service Providers has sounded an alert to all society committees across Maharashtra. Several recent cases revealed tenants submitting forged leave and licence agreements, often altered PDF copies created by local agents. "Societies need to be vigilant. Fake documents can land owners in legal trouble. Many tenants submit altered PDFs instead of officially registered documents as they are fleeced. They need to do it through a proper agent," association president Sachin Shinghavi said, adding that a robust verification mechanism is the need of the hour. In one case, a society member discovered a forged document only after checking it with the registration department. "An agent edited the document and submitted it as genuine. Only after showing it to officials did we realise it was fake," the member said and added that the department initiated action against the agent. Shinghavi also highlighted issues in the current leave and licence 1.9 software, where police verification is often missing despite being mandatory. "Though the process includes Aadhaar verification, witness details, address confirmation, and sharing data with police via CCTNS, loopholes remain as in some fake documents these are not seen, which needs to be checked thoroughly using the department website," he said. To address this, the registration department introduced a QR code-based verification in Mumbai City and suburbs under the leave and licence 2.0 software. "The QR code allows instant verification and ensures police verification is auto-generated," said deputy inspector general (IT) Abhay Mohite. Work is under way to expand this feature across Maharashtra, he said. Housing federation members stressed that landlords bear the brunt of fake registrations, and called for a simplified, transparent system. Tenants, too, have fallen victims. "An agent promised me that the agreement was registered, but it turned out to be fake. There should be a way for tenants to verify the process themselves," said Seema N, a tenant in Pune. Scandalous: Didi slams Delhi Police for ‘help translate Bangladeshi' note

1 2 Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee hit out at Delhi Police on Sunday over a notice issued to Banga Bhawan in the national capital seeking help to translate "Bangladeshi language" for an ongoing trial. The trial relates to eight suspected illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who had been arrested by Lodhi Colony police. The CM called the notice, "Scandalous, insulting, anti-national, unconstitutional," and called upon all sections of society to rise in protest against the repeated "insult and humiliation" of Bengali-speaking people in India. The notice, posted by CM on her X handle, showed a Lodhi Colony inspector's requisition to Banga Bhavan officer-in-charge in Chanakyapuri, seeking help to translate "texts written in Bangladeshi language" in Hindi and English. "Bengali, our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, the language in which our National Anthem and the National Song (the latter by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay) are written, the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!!" According to the police, the accused did not have valid passports or visas. Police said the suspects were in possession of copies of IDs such as bank account information and birth certificates. The suspects are currently in jail on the basis of a court order, police said. The notice uploaded by the CM read: "The identification documents contain texts written in Bangladeshi and need to be translated into Hindi and English. Now, for the investigation to proceed further, it is requested that an official translator/interpreter proficient in the Bangladeshi national language may be provided for the aforesaid purpose." The notice promises to pay for translation bills. CM Banerjee said, "This insults all Bengali speaking people of India. They cannot use this kind of language which degrades and debases us all. We urge immediate strongest possible protests from all against the anti-Bengali Govt of India who are using such anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate the Bengali-speaking people of India." Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool's national general secretary, also protested the notice, writing on X: "This is not a mere clerical error, it is yet another calculated attempt by BJP to defame Bengal, undermine our cultural identity and equate West Bengal with Bangladesh for narrow political propaganda." "It is a direct violation of Article 343 and the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. There is no language called 'Bangladeshi'. To call Bangla a foreign language is not just an insult — it's an attack on our identity, culture and belonging. Bengalis are not outsiders in their own homeland," he added. Singer Rupam Islam too spoke out against the notice. "What is this? Isn't Bangla one of the 22 official languages of India? Why must it be mentioned as Bangladeshi language? Height of ignorance and stupidity," he wrote on X. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
