
Castletown House: Vandals cause more than €500,000 of damage amid dispute over right-of-way access
Some time over the May bank holiday weekend vandals entered a temporary

They first cut the wires to the house's CCTV units, then overturned four vehicles and dumped a cherrypicker into the river. The cost of the damage is estimated at €500,000, which could rise to €700,000 if the vehicles have to be replaced.
Donaghcumper House was bought by
Kildare County Council
earlier this year with a view to creating a linear park along the Liffey, but it was bolted up and out of bounds to the public last week, with security at the gate.
The OPW was using it as a temporary depot in advance of the proposed reopening later this month of Castletown House, which has been at the centre of a major dispute over right-of-way access.

The Castletown estate consisted of 800 acres. It was sold off in pieces, with the house and some land transferred to the OPW in 1994. Since then, the OPW has been steadily buying up land that formed the historic demesne, acquiring 227 acres so far.
The main vehicular access point was off the M4, and the car park, which accommodated some 250,000 cars annually, was located near the house.
The M4 entrance was part of private land owned by Janus Securities. The OPW made a strong business case to the Department of Public Expenditure to purchase the lands.
In September 2022 it argued: 'Ownership of this key access route might provide considerable leverage to a new owner, either through a refusal to renew the State licence for access or through an unjustifiably high increase in the licence fee charged for access.'
The OPW tried to buy the land privately in 2021, but was outbid when it was put for sale in 2023. It was bought by Kildare-based developers Killross Properties, owned by Lar McKenna, and Springwood for more than €5 million.

Negotiations over a licensing agreement between the OPW and the owners broke down over the issue of public lighting and insurance.
The OPW and community's worst fears were confirmed on May 11th, 2024, when the developer erected a barrier across the M4 entrance and blocked all private vehicular access to the demesne. The entrance is now padlocked and bolted, with 'no trespassing' signs outside.
This has led to an ancillary dispute between some local campaigners and the OPW, which now uses Lime Avenue, the pedestrian entrance to Castletown House, for vehicular access.
Originally, the OPW agreed to its vehicles accessing the site with somebody walking in front of them, but it has since decided this is no longer financially or operationally feasible. Instead, a buggy escorts OPW vehicles up the lane.
The Save Castletown Gate Protectors community group say Lime Avenue is used by parents with buggies, children learning to ride bicycles and people in wheelchairs and there must be a return to the original walking escort agreement.
They keep a constant vigil in a blue tent at the entrance to Lime Avenue while the grounds of Castletown are open. These are still open to pedestrians but the gates are locked at 5.30pm, another source of grievance for local people who feel they are being shut out of their park during daylight hours.
There are no less than 11 organisations involved in trying to restore the status quo at Castletown House, and they are united in horror at the recent vandalism.
'This wasn't a few kids in the woods who had a few cans and decided to have a bit of fun,' said Vinny Monaghan, chairman of the Project Castletown campaign, about the recent vandalism. Whoever did it, he said, knew what they were doing and knew the impact it would have.
Local resident Treasa Keegan added: 'Castletown is the Phoenix Park of north Kildare, it always has been. It is the back yard of every person in Celbridge and Leixip. We absolutely have to protect and preserve it.
'I have been on the phone for the last 24 hours solid. I haven't eaten, I've barely slept. I have had conversation after conversation with the people and everybody is numb with shock, disgust, anger and frustration.'
Áine Tobin, a campaigner, said local people were grateful for the efforts OPW staff have made to reopen the house.
'To target the workers like that is not on and it's not nice. I don't know who did it. The amount of damage done is horrific.'
Those who spoke to The Irish Times, and locals who posted on the various social media platforms, are adamant that none of their members had anything to do with the vandalism.
The OPW has been back on site preparing for the reopening of the house later this month. Staff were being taken by bus from Donaghcumber House to the Lime Avenue entrance and walking the rest of the way, or driving if in service vehicles.
Talks scheduled for Monday with the Minister of State responsible for the OPW, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, who is determined to succeed where his predecessors failed in resolving the dispute.
Artist Fifi Smith said locals have proposed a possible solution to the issue of vehicular access to Castletown, using a car park in the Kildare Innovation Centre.
She and local campaigners had been urging the OPW to apply this for 18 months, but she said 'they have been very lethargic in response to that'.
Mr Moran told RTÉ's Morning Ireland last week that he expects a planning application to be submitted in relation to a new car park in the coming weeks.
Ms Smith says a new car park could go a long way to resolving the dispute.
'All they need to do is to agree some details about how the traffic goes up and down the avenue and give a firm undertaking that Lime Avenue will be simply a pedestrian entrance. At the same time, they should be proactive about providing the car park which has been laid out for them.'
The issue could be resolved, campaigners believe, if the State used compulsory purchase powers on the lands involved. However, the OPW says that is not a matter for it.
Alternatively, campaigners believe, the State could invoke the Heritage Act to ensure the M4 side is reopened.
The developers did not respond to requests for comment.

Murdered farmer Michael Gaine was not afraid to be ‘soft, loving and kind', funeral told
The requiem mass of murdered farmer Michael 'Mike' Gaine has heard that he was 'a proud Kerryman, and an even prouder Kenmare man' who was incredibly generous and would 'chip in to help any time and any place'. Mourners at the Holy Cross Church in Kenmare, Co Kerry were told that Mr Gaine was not afraid to show his emotions and was 'soft and loving, caring and affectionate, kind and considerate'. His cousin Eoghan Clarke said he was honoured to speak at the funeral on behalf of Michael's wife Janice. He said that Mike did the work of three men on his farm while still managing to carve out multiple hours in the day in which he helped others. 'I recall on one occasion when Mike was convincing one of his friends to head out for dinner one evening with the friend – who shall remain nameless – complaining that he was too tired. Mike shut down that argument immediately by replying: 'Sure, we're all tired'. That was Michael – he loved life, he always made the most of it and he truly lived every single moment. Mr Clarke said Janice had travelled from Jakarta to visit her parents in Kerry for Christmas when a young Mike, looking dapper in his dress suit, plucked up the courage to speak to her at the bar. 'Michael explained that he was heading to Australia soon and in the days before Google and smartphones, Michael explained to Janice that Garuda airlines – Indonesia's national airline – seemed to offer the best value. Janice, presumably intrigued by Michael's extensive knowledge of flight routes to and from Australia, agreed to Michael's invitation to dinner before she then returned to Indonesia in the new year. 'For the next few years, Michael kept Telecom Éireann in business, feeding coins into one of the payphones in Kenmare to speak to Janice in Indonesia and then Taiwan, where he came to visit her. The rest is history.' Mr Clarke said that Michael's interests were as varied as his friend network. They included rallying, farming, current affairs, holidays to exotic places, DoneDeal, and all music – even opera. He added that by virtue of his incredible character, Mike attracted a lot of good people into his life. 'My own friends describe their first time meeting Mike and have said that he instantly gelled with them, made them feel at ease and showed a genuine interest in them. Another beautiful quote I have seen from a friend of Michael's was 'I always left in a better mood after talking to or bumping into you.' We will all miss Michael terribly.' Fr Hayes said that the shocking murder of Mr Gaine had brought 'something terrible' in to the peaceful existence of locals. 'We are discommoded and feel at a loss. Over these weeks, since Michael went missing, we have asked so many questions – and, in life, sometimes, there are no answers.' Fr Hayes said that the focus of the funeral mass was on recovering the dignity of a much loved family member, friend and neighbour. 'Today is a day for recovering the dignity of Michael Gaine. Today we recover Michael's dignity because, today, we speak Michael's name with love. And it is the dignity of Michael's life, and not the manner of Michael's death, that will abide in our hearts. Here in this place, today, we recover Michael's dignity. We speak Michael's name with love.' He asked mourners to enjoy life and to lift people's spirits in the manner in which Mike did. The funeral of Mr Gaine took place 11 weeks after he went missing from his farm in Kenmare. His disappearance was initially treated as a missing persons case. It was declared a murder investigation by gardaí on April 29th. Human remains found in fields and at the Gaine's farm in Kenmare in mid-May were confirmed as being those of Mr Gaine. A man in his 50s was arrested on May 19th last in connection with the murder. He was subsequently released without charge pending a file to the DPP. Mr Gaine is survived by his wife Janice, sisters Noreen and Catherine, nieces and nephews, his aunt Noreen Fitzpatrick, his close friends DJ and Shane and his wide circle of friends.

The Irish economy grew by 22% over the past year. Yes, you read that right
Ireland's economic data was always going to be a bit special at the start of this year. But Thursday's figures were mind-bending. It is impossible to overstate the extent to which we now stand out in international comparisons. And this is not just a curiosity – it matters. The economy, as measured by gross domestic product (GDP) , was 22 per cent larger in the first quarter of 2025 than one year earlier, according to the latest estimates from the Central Statistics Office . Think about it. The figures suggest that for every €1 of activity last year, there was €1.22 in 2025. Even comparing GDP in the first quarter of this year with the last quarter of 2024, there is a rise of close to 10 per cent – this is roughly the extent of growth across the euro zone over the past decade. Of course this bonkers data is not real, in the sense that it does not reflect what is happening in the underlying economy in which we all live. How could it? As has been long discussed the headline economic data is entirely distorted by the activities and tax planning of a small number of very big US tech and pharma companies. From time to time, this has created huge distortions in the figures. A decade ago, top US economist Paul Krugman famously described a 26 per cent GDP growth rate reported for the Irish economy (later revised up to over 30 per cent) as 'leprechaun' economics . At the time the figures were distorted by massive tax-driven investments by the companies concerned, including Apple, essentially a manoeuvre by the companies involved to try to keep their tax bills down as international rules changed. READ MORE Now, as one observer put it, we are seeing another 'Krugman' moment. This time the reasons are different. Big pharma companies have been rushing product over to the US to try to get drugs and key ingredients into the market before Donald Trump announces tariffs on the sector. This has led to a surge in exports, feeding into the GDP data. Many of these are manufactured here – and some are made elsewhere but organised by Irish subsidiaries and so also show up in our figures. And so we see a massive surge in Irish GDP in the first quarter of this year. A big – temporary – decline in pharma exports in GDP will follow at some stage, as the firms involved must now have massive stocks jammed into every free warehouse in the US. Much will depend on how the tariffs story plays out. [ Welcome (back) to the era of Leprechaun economics Opens in new window ] Whether Krugman renews his leprechaun offensive or not, let's not pretend this won't be noticed. Ireland's GDP data is not some irrelevance in a quirky economic corner. The amounts of money being moved through Ireland are now enormous. Daniel Kral, chief economist at Oxford Economics , calculates that Ireland – which accounts for 4 per cent of the euro zone economy – accounted for half its total growth over the past year. Analysts have taken to looking at the figures 'excluding Ireland'. How do we pull back from all of this to judge the underlying health of the economy? Total demand in the domestic economy – adjusted by the CSO to remove the multinational factors - rose just 1 per cent over the year. But we need to look under the surface here, too. Consumer spending, a good measure of how we feel, was up by a decent 2.5 per cent. But the overall figure was dragged down by a fall in business investment, presumably reflecting the international uncertainty. So households continued to spend in the first part of the year, but businesses are taking a wait-and-see approach to big capital spending. This is likely to be reflected in the jobs market as the year goes on – and here AI is also changing the game in many sectors. Consumers may get more cautious too. Uncertainty is starting to slow the economy and this is a trend we need to watch as the year goes on. The piece of data that seemed a bit out of line this week was a 30 per cent fall in corporation tax in May compared with the same month last year. This was affected by the comparison with a strong May last year – which the Department of Finance suggests was boosted by once-off factors. Two of our biggest taxpayers, Pfizer and Microsoft – pay significant amounts of tax that month. But the key early indicator for most of the big companies is June – and what happens here will give a good pointer for the year as a whole. The figures do underline one point. It is our huge reliance on the opaque affairs of four or five massive companies – and our exposure to the sectors they operate in, their own performance and complex decisions on how their tax structures are set up. Our latest bout of data exceptionalism again puts Ireland in the spotlight, when it would have been better to keep the head down. It underlines the outsize take Ireland is getting from pharma and tech activity in the EU – both contentious points in the White House. Notably, the US added Ireland to an economic watch list this week, based on the size of our trade surplus. We are very much on the radar in Washington. Our corporate tax take and manufacturing base are looked on enviously not only from the US , but from elsewhere in Europe. [ 'No long-term commitments to anything' – Ireland's economy is experiencing a silent slowdown Opens in new window ] The advance shipping of products again focuses attention on the scale of activity and tax planning in Ireland by big pharma companies. And this causes a rollercoaster of cyclical activity. But what really counts is longer-term, structural issues. Will these pharma giants decide over time – and it would take years – to relocate some of their production to the US? Will their profits and thus tax payments here be hit by Trump's policies? Or will they – or some of the tech giants – alter their corporate structures so that they pay significantly less tax here? It comes down to whether Trump's policies change the way the economic and corporate world operates fundamentally, a fair bit or not much at all. As Ireland benefits from the current system so much, the more it changes, the more risks there are for us. The coming months will tell a lot.

Nine-figure payouts to Ryanair and Starbucks CEOs are controversial, but Michael O'Leary can point to results
Michael O'Leary has hit his target. Ryanair 's share price stayed above €21 for 28 days, earning him a €125 million bonus if he stays until 2028. The deal has its critics. 'Morally questionable,' said Luke Hildyard of the High Pay Centre, a UK think tank. Others argue such payouts reward luck more than leadership, with cheap oil, index inclusion and billions in share buybacks all helping lift Ryanair's stock. O'Leary might counter that Ryanair shares have more than doubled since the deal was struck in 2019, comfortably outperforming rival airlines. Contrast that with Starbucks , where Brian Niccol was handed a reported $113 million sign-on package last August to replace embattled CEO Laxman Narasimhan. Shares soared 25 per cent on the news, adding $21 billion in market value. But the results remain bitter. Margins and profits are down. Competition remains fierce in China. The stock tanked after last month's earnings miss and has now given up almost all of its Niccol bump. Niccol may yet prove his worth – his turnaround of Chipotle is textbook stuff – but the caffeine hit investors got from his arrival has faded fast. O'Leary, never one to miss a jab, might well look at Starbucks and say: at least I had to do something to get my millions.
