Wallabies to drop bombshell on Springboks

The Springboks made a relatively surprise selection decision of their own at flyhalf earlier this week when they picked Manie Libbok to start at 10 against the Wallabies this Saturday.
However, according to reports from Australia, Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt will go one better by backing 35-year-old James O'Connor – who last played for the Wallabies in 2022 – to wear the No 10 jersey against the Springboks.
According to The Roar , the veteran playmaker will make his shock comeback to Test rugby ahead of Ben Donaldson, who is likely to be on the the bench.
Schmidt is otherwise expected to go into the Rugby Championship opener with a similar matchday squad to the one that ended the British & Irish Lions series with an impressive victory.
The Wallabies are set to publicly reveal their team on Thursday.
Springboks: 15 Aphelele Fassi, 14 Edwill van der Merwe, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Manie Libbok, 9 Grant Williams, 8 Siya Kolisi (captain), 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit , 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Ox Nche.

Miscellaneous: Should the Springboks win, it will be the first time they have won five successive Tests against the Wallabies in more than half a century (they won seven matches in a row against Australia between 1969 and 1971).
Eben Etzebeth will extend his record as the most capped Springbok of all time to 134 Test matches when he takes the field. He will also move past Conor Murray as the 11 th most capped men's player in rugby history, which will see him level with Gethin Jenkins in joint-10 th place on the list.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi's starting berth will see him strike 94 Test caps, meaning he will only require six more Test appearances to become the ninth player in South African rugby history to earn 100 Test caps.
A victory for the Springboks will see them extend their unbeaten run against the Wallabies at Ellis Park to seven matches. They have never lost a match against Australia at the iconic stadium.
The Boks have won six of their last 10 matches against the Wallabies – a track record they will be determined to improve on this weekend. Their last defeat against the Wallabies was in Adelaide in 2022.

Good news on four Kaizer Chiefs players

Kaizer Chiefs are heading into their next Betway Premiership match in better shape, with four players who started the season on the sidelines now ready for action. Coach Nasreddine Nabi is yet to return from Tunisia for a family emergency, but assistant coach Cedric Kaze has offered a significant squad boost ahead of the clash with Polokwane City. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the Burundina mentor confirmed that four players have become available for selection. Second Orlando Pirates player moves overseas First up, former Orlando Pirates defender Paseka Mako has fully recovered from a broken arm and is now cleared by medical staff. The injury forced him out of the pre-season tour, the Toyota Cup, and the opener against Stellenbosch FC. Confirmed: R1.7 million coming into Kaizer Chiefs' bank Then there's Ethan Chisllet. The dynamic midfielder missed that first game, too. His South African passport is sorted, and he's officially registered as a local player. There's more. Pule Mmodi returns from suspension, and Ashley Du Preez, who picked up a minor knock, is fit again. 'The good thing is that we didn't have any injuries from the last game or suspensions,' Kaze told the media. 'We are going to have a couple of players back from different setbacks. Mmodi is back from his suspension, and Ethan is available for selection after his paper has been resolved. Mako, as well, is available for selection after being cleared by the medical staff. I think that we are in a very good space for tomorrow's game [Wednesday night at the FNB Stadium at 19:30]. This is why tomorrow's game for us is very important. 'We are very focused, everyone, the players, the technical staff, the management. We know the importance of tomorrow's game,' concluded Kaze. SA Schools: The unofficial 'official' top 20 rankings

From Paarl Gimnasium to Paul Roos, Paarl Boys to Grey College and Affies, these are the latest unofficial 'official' schoolboy rankings for the 2025 season. In South Africa, rugby is a tradition as deeply embedded in our history as braais. It is an honour to get into any of our top rugby schools such as Paarl Gimnasium, Affies, Grey College, Affies and Paarl Boys amongst many others. So, it is an even bigger honour to represent the first team in an age-old SA Schools rugby derby. Let's take a look at the SA Schools who are on top of the unofficial 'official' SA Schoolboy rugby rankings (based on first team fixtures in 2025). Ranking School Province 1 Paarl Boys Western Cape 2 Paarl Gim Western Cape 3 Grey College Free State 4 Affies Gauteng 5 Paul Roos Western Cape 6 DHS Western Cape 7 Westville Gauteng 8 Oakdale KwaZulu-Natal 9 Garsfontein KwaZulu-Natal 10 Hilton College Gauteng 12 Wynberg KwaZulu-Natal 13 Grey High School Western Cape 14 Stellenberg Western Cape 15 Helpmekaar Gauteng 16 Noordheuwel Western Cape 17 Northwood KwaZulu-Natal 18 Queens College Eastern Cape 19 Boland Landbou Gauteng 20 Jeppe Gauteng * As reported on The South African , you should take these rankings with a pinch of salt because each school has different fixtures. Meaning, each school faces different schools and no school faces each school home and away. These rankings are based off the recent results on the 9 August 2025. The 2025 SA Schools rugby season is coming to a close. 'The 2025 school rugby season nears its final chapter, the last few clashes of the year are being fought with all the pride, passion, and determination that makes South African schoolboy rugby so special. While the rankings are almost set in stone, there are still those final, fiercely contested fixtures that can sway positions and settle bragging rights before the curtain falls,' SASchoolSport confirmed. Therefore, there are a few fixtures left to determine the final schoolboy rugby rankings of the year. 'With only a handful of fixtures left on the calendar, the 2025 Fairtree First XV Rankings are edging toward their final shape. It's been a season of spectacular tries, dramatic comebacks, and unforgettable rivalries—and while the end is in sight, there's still rugby to be played, moments to be made, and hearts to be lifted before the ultimate whistle blows,' they concluded. Three Springboks with everything to gain against Wallabies

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus selected a star-studded matchday 23 for this weekend's Test against the Wallabies, and there aren't all that many 'newcomers' who have cracked the nod for this tournament opener. However, there are still some big opportunities for a few 'fringe' players, and here we look at three who can truly shake things up with a big performance. Edwill van der Merwe The talented wing has made a flying start to his Test career, but there is no doubt that this Saturday's Test against the Wallabies will present his biggest challenge to date. With Cheslin Kolbe rested as a precaution due to an injury niggle, Van der Merwe must make the most of this rare opportunity to don the No 14 in such a high-profile fixture, and to prove that there is not all that much that separates him from his first-choice counterparts. Andre Esterhuizen In rapid fashion, Esterhuizen has become an integral member of the current Springbok group, particularly due to the fact he is viewed as a unique hybrid player who can cover centre and flank. Damian de Allende is virtually irreplaceable at inside centre, but this is another game where Esterhuizen can demonstrate just how much he has progressed as a player over the last 24 months, while ramping up the competition for that No 12 jersey. Marco van Staden With Siya Kolisi owning the No 6 jersey, the opportunity for Van Staden to earn a start in a 'big' game like this came as quite a surprise as the Springbok captain was instead shifted to eighthman. Van Staden has clearly been chosen for his impact at the breakdown, and to negate some of the Wallabies' threats in this area, and so it will be fascinating to see how he grabs this opportunity especially considering it surely won't be all that long before Kolisi returns to his more regular position at openside flank.
