From Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear sites to Tehran's missile strikes on Tel Aviv — here's what's happened in 24 hours, and where the US stands as the conflict escalates
Iran and Israel are targeting each other with missiles and airstrikes in what has become Israel's biggest-ever air offensive against its longtime adversary, launched in a bid to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
On Saturday morning, air raid sirens echoed through Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as successive waves of Iranian missiles streaked across Israeli skies, sending residents rushing into shelters while defense systems worked to intercept the incoming projectiles.
The escalation began with Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites that killed 78 people and wounded more than 320, according to Iran's UN ambassador, who said the overwhelming majority were civilians despite the operation targeting generals and scientists. Iran retaliated with two waves of long-range missiles aimed at Tel Aviv, wounding at least 41 people across both attacks.
For years, Israel had threatened such strikes while successive American administrations sought to prevent them, fearing they would ignite wider Middle Eastern conflict. As projectiles and interceptor rockets left trails of smoke and flame across Friday's night sky, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed Israel would not 'escape safely from this great crime".

UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi told the Security Council that the above-ground pilot enrichment plant at Natanz has been destroyed.
He said the UN is still gathering information about Israeli attacks on two other facilities, the Fordow fuel enrichment plant and at Isfahan.

‘Our victory will be your victory': Israel's Netanyahu lauds Trump's backing of Iran strikes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent effusive birthday wishes to US President Donald Trump on Saturday, praising him as a staunch ally as Israel continued to bombard its arch foe Iran. read more This handout picture released by the Iranian Red Crescent on June 14, 2025, show Iranian Red Crescent volunteers working in a Tehran neighbourhood hit by a reported Israeli strike. (Photo by Iranian Red Crescent / AFP) Israel's air strikes on Iran had the 'clear support' of US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday, saying 'Our victory will be your victory. There had been reports in the Israeli press of friction between the two men in recent weeks as Netanyahu threatened to attack Iran, even as the U.S. was in talks with Tehran to secure restrictions on its long-contested nuclear programme. However, within hours of Israel launching its large-scale assault on Friday, Trump said the attacks were 'excellent' and 'very successful'. Netanyahu responded on Saturday by showering the U.S. leader with praise. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Happy Birthday to you, President Donald J. Trump,' Netanyahu said in a statement. 'You've been an extraordinary leader, decisive, courageous, with a clear vision and clear action. You have done great things for Israel.' With Israeli warplanes attacking sites linked to Iran's atomic programme, Netanyahu framed the operation as part of a broader struggle between free societies and a 'criminal regime in Iran' that seeks to export violence across the world. 'Our enemy is your enemy… We're dealing with something that will threaten all of us sooner or later. Our victory will be your victory,' Netanyahu said in a video statement addressed to Trump on the US leader's birthday. 'This is what Israel is doing with the support, the clear support of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and the American people and many others in the world.' Iran has repeatedly denied Western accusations that it has covertly sought to develop nuclear bombs and it has accused the U.S. of being complicit in Israel's attacks this week – something Washington has rejected. Netanyahu also extended birthday congratulations to the U.S. military on its 250th anniversary, calling American troops 'guardians of freedom for two and a half centuries'.
