One Year From Software Fiasco, Sonos Can Still Carry a Tune

When Sonos launched the overhauled version of its app that customers use to control their product, it proved so buggy that many complained of being completely unable to use their systems. The update even marred the launch of the company's first headphones just a month later. It ultimately forced Sonos to call off other product launches and take down its financial forecast for the year.
Sonos is still working its way out of that hole. But the latest results were a good step in the right direction. Revenue rose nearly 3% from a year earlier to about $260 million, beating Wall Street's projections. The company also kept gross margins flat with the prior quarter at 44%—despite a step-up in production to get ahead of the tariffs President Trump announced just after the quarter ended. Sonos shares have jumped more than 16% since the report.
The stock is still down 42% since the new app launched, compared with a 10% gain for the Nasdaq in that time. So clearly Sonos still has a lot of work to do. That work is falling to Tom Conrad, the longtime Sonos board member who stepped in as chief executive in January. It has been a busy four months, with Sonos reducing its workforce by 12% and Conrad overhauling the organizational structure. That thinned out the layers, combining multiple hardware business units into one and centralizing the company's software efforts.
'It's pretty dramatic the progress we have made,' Conrad said in an interview. Software in particular remains a major focus—Sonos won't be launching any new hardware products for the rest of its current fiscal year as it focuses on making further improvements to the software. 'My bar is, the app has to be fast, reliable and easy to use,' he said.
Will it all work? The Sonos brand has certainly taken a hit, but the damage doesn't seem permanent, or universal. The company has called out strong sales of the Arc Ultra over the past two quarters, a $1,000 TV soundbar that came out last fall when Sonos was still dealing with the blowback from its app update.
And new customers are still coming in—at least at the right price. Sonos recently cut the price on its Era 100 by 20% to match the $199 price of its previous entry-level speakers. Conrad said the response so far has been strong, especially among customers new to the company's products. In a note to clients, Erik Woodring of Morgan Stanley said such moves could 'lower the friction of onboarding new users, which could pay dividends if successful, as the average Sonos household had 3.08 products at the end of [fiscal year 2024].'
Still, Sonos will have to pull off the difficult balancing act of repairing its brand and expanding its customer base while in the midst of a trade war. The company deftly moved most of its manufacturing out of China during the first Trump administration, but it still faces tariff costs related to its manufacturing bases in Malaysia and Vietnam.
Those costs could raise its expenses by as much as $10 million in its fiscal fourth quarter. That will leave Sonos with the same hard choice faced by other premium hardware makers like Apple: to raise prices or sacrifice profit margins. But building up inventory has bought the company some time. 'We have a lot of levers we can pull, and we don't have to pull them in haste,' Conrad said.
Today's Sonos knows all too well the value of getting it right the first time.

Google Issues Emergency Update For All 3 Billion Chrome Users
Update all browsers now. Google has suddenly released an emergency Chrome update, warning that a vulnerability discovered by its Threat Analysis Group has been used in attacks. Such is the severity of the risk, that Google also confirmed that ahead of this update, The issue 'was mitigated on 2025-05-28 by a configuration change' pushed out to all platforms. Google says it 'is aware that an exploit for CVE-2025-5419 exists in the wild,' and that full access to details on the vulnerability will 'be be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven't yet fixed.' CVE-2025-5419 is an out of bounds read and write in V8, the type of dangerous memory flaw typically found and fixed on the world's most popular browser. While it's only marked as high-severity, the fact attacks are underway means apply the fix is critical. There is already a U.S. government mandate for federal staff to update Chrome by Thursday or stop using the browser, after a separate attack warning. And there has been another high-severity fix since then, with two separate fixes. It is inevitable that this latest warning and update will also prompt CISA to issue a 21-day update mandate. There is a second fix included in this emergency update — CVE-2025-5068 is another memory issue, a 'use after free in Blink,' that was disclosed by an external researcher. NIST warns that CVE-2025-5419 'allows a remote attacker to potentially exploit heap corruption via a crafted HTML page,' and that it applies across Chromium, suggesting other browsers will also issue emergency patches. As usual, you should a flag on your browser that see the update has downloaded. You need to restart Chrome to ensure it takes full effect. All your normal tabs will then reopen — unless you elect not to do that. But your Incognito tabs will not reopen, so make sure you save any work or copy down any URLs you want to revisit.

What is the Pension Investment Review?
Last week saw the publication of the Pension Investment Review which outlines government's ambitious plans to boost growth both to the UK economy and improve people's pensions through a number of mega funds. The idea behind it is that the UK defined contribution pension market is too fragmented, which doesn't deliver the best value to members. To combat this, the government wants to make sure pension funds are big enough to provide economies of scale. Its plan is that any pension provider offering auto-enrolment workplace pensions to a number of employers must have at least one big "default" arrangement. The default is the fund you end up in if you don't make any investment decisions. The minimum size of this fund is to be £25bn. This will apply from 2030. However, there is some wiggle room in that schemes worth over £10bn that are unable to reach the minimum size requirement by 2030 can continue to operate, as long as they demonstrate a clear plan to reach £25bn by 2035. The view is that this consolidation will help schemes become more efficient and drive down costs. These larger funds will also boost investment in asset classes such as infrastructure which have up until now only really been available to the largest investors — like the mammoth schemes seen in Canada and Australia. The government believes investing in a wider range of assets will potentially bring higher returns to UK pension savers and a boost to the economy. The numbers quoted in the report are impressive, quoting total savings of around £1bn per year through economies of scale. The government estimates the average earner could get a £6,000 boost to their pension pots at retirement from consolidation alone. Financial services company Hargreaves Lansdown believes that while scale is important in delivering better pension outcomes, it must not come at the cost of reducing competition, member choice and much needed innovation. There's still a lot of detail to be fleshed out and it will be interesting to see how this will be supported. If the market is to thrive, there needs to be space for smaller, innovative providers. It's a lesson learned in the retail banking market where competition from smaller challenger banks has put pressure on larger players to improve user experience and product offerings. There's a lot going on in pensions right now. For instance, the pensions dashboard continues to progress and there are also changes afoot that will enable providers to deliver more assistance to scheme members with personalised recommendations — something they haven't been able to do before. These changes also have the potential to be a game changer in terms of engaging scheme members and helping them make better decisions. The push for scale shouldn't stifle the innovation that can flow from these regulatory changes.
