Braai royalty wanted: Could you be SA's next boerewors champion?
If your boerewors game is strong enough to earn you a legendary nickname like Grill Sergeant, Jamie Olivewors, or Braaian Reynolds, Shoprite and Checkers invite you to enter your finest recipe into the 33rd annual Championship Boerewors competition before entries close on June 20.
South Africa's 2025 Boerewors Champion will walk away with the grand prize of a brand-new Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 RB AT valued at R705 800, and the bragging rights of having their winning recipe sold at Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide.
By showcasing the nation's most authentic and delicious traditional recipes, made with the best quality ingredients, SA's No. 1 Championship Boerewors has firmly established itself as a customer-favourite over the past three decades.
Over the last year alone, Shoprite and Checkers butcheries sold close to 6 million kilograms (6 000 tonnes) of Championship Boerewors – enough to make 56 million boerewors rolls.
'This competition is a celebration of South Africa, not only the country's rich food heritage, but also the culture we've built spending time with friends and family around braai fires,' said 2024 Championship Boerewors competition winner, Ruard Briel.
'Winning the title of Boerewors Champion, and becoming part of this legacy, was such an honour. All the contestants were treated like royalty, and the experience was unforgettable, which is why I will be entering again.'
Participants are expected to demonstrate skill and mastery of the full boerewors crafting process – from blending the perfect mix of herbs and spices, to processing the meat and producing perfectly stuffed and cooked boerewors.
All entries will be assessed by a panel of culinary experts from the South African Chefs Association (SACA). Submitted recipes must comply with traditional boerewors making guidelines and will be rigorously vetted before moving to the next round.
Once validated, the judges will shortlist 30 recipes before narrowing them down to the top 10 finalists. The finalists take part in a special live cook-off event where a panel of judges will crown one deserving contestant as the Championship Boerewors winner for 2025.
The winner and runners up receive the following:
• First prize: A new Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 RB AT and R20 000 in cash
• Second prize: R50 000 in cash
• Third prize: R30 000 in cash

Toyota welcomes Comrades winner Gerda Steyn as official ambassador
Toyota SA Motors has announced Gerda Steyn as its new brand ambassador for the next three years. The announcement was made at the 98th Comrades Marathon on Sunday, where Steyn was crowned winner in the women's category. The qualified quantity surveyor is a four-time Comrades marathon champion and one of the most accomplished ultra-marathon athletes in the world, holding records for the Two Oceans (six times) and Comrades Marathon down run and up run. Steyn's running career kick-started at the Comrades Marathon in 2015 where she finished in the 56th position. As part of her ambassadorship Steyn will be paired with the Toyota Fortuner SUV. 'Toyota SA Motors is proud to support athletes who embody determination, resilience and a global sporting spirit. To this effect, Toyota's partnership with Gerda is the beginning of new and exciting adventures,' said Tasneem Lorgat, GM marketing communications at Toyota SA. The company said Steyn's appointment reaffirmed Toyota's commitment to supporting sports as a tool for nation-building and social cohesion — values linked to its historic 21-year support of the Comrades Marathon. Commenting on her appointment, Steyn said: 'To represent Toyota — pioneers and leaders in the motoring industry — is a huge honour. I look forward to this long-term partnership with a name that stands head and shoulders above the rest.'

These nine vehicles are NOW targeted by hijackers
These nine vehicles are NOW targeted by hijackers Hijackers in South Africa are now zeroing in on a new list of high-demand vehicles—with the VW Polo, Toyota Hilux, and Ford Ranger topping the list. According to the latest crime statistics released by SAPS, Pretoria remains one of the country's most targeted regions, with hijacking hotspots identified in Mamelodi, Sunnyside, and Pretoria West. Criminals are becoming bolder and more organised, using follow-home tactics and high-traffic zones to strike. Here's everything you need to know about the most hijacked cars—and where you're most at risk in Tshwane. Paul Visser from the Pretoria ICE Community Network said here are the most targeted vehicles in the country now: VW Polo Toyota Hilux Ford Ranger Toyota Corolla Cross Toyota Fortuner Haval Jolion Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Haval H6 Chery Tiggo 7 Pro These models are often targeted due to their resale value, parts demand, and, increasingly, use in cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates. While carjackings in South Africa declined by 15.1% year-on-year (from 5,338 in Q4 2024 to 4,533 in Q4 2025), Pretoria remains a high-risk area, particularly in the following precincts: Here are the hotspots in Pretoria: Pretoria West Mamelodi East & Mamelodi West Sunnyside Akasia Temba Hijackings in Pretoria often occur: Near major intersections and traffic light stops. In driveways during arrivals/departures. Around shopping centres and transport hubs. What is the modus operandi? Criminals typically operate in small armed groups, often using follow-home tactics. Electronic jamming and surveillance of daily routines are standard methods used to select victims.
