Prince William's role in Pope funeral talks between Trump and Zelensky

Prince William played a key role in setting up the meeting between
Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky
and world leaders
Donald Trump
, Keir Starmer, and Emmanuel Macron, it has been revealed.
The sit down between Zelenksy and Trump was the first face-to-face meeting
since their dramatic blow up in the White House in February
.
But the seemingly friendly meeting went well. Zelensky described it as a "good meeting that has the potential to become historic," while
the White House described it as "very productive."
The Prince of Wales attended Saturday's ceremony at the Vatican. He is now being praised for a subtle move that helped pave the way for subsequent discussions between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky.

The heir-apparent's participation in Saturday's event included walking alongside Starmer in St Peter's Basilica in Rome for the service. However, he crucially chose to discreetly step aside from a huddle that formed between the political leaders including not only Sir Keir, Mr. Trump, and Mr. Zelensky but also France's president Mr. Macron.
William "respectfully peeled away" to allow the PM and his colleagues to continue their talks, which were then followed by the sit-down between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky, the Telegraph reports.
The Prince of Wales is reported to have "read the room" and moved away.

Following the meeting between the Ukrainian President and Trump, White House communications director Steven Cheung later stated: 'President Trump and President Zelensky met privately today and had a very productive discussion. '.
William attending the Vatican, comes after his father Charles attended Pope John Paul II's funeral in 2005, representing his mother, the late Queen. Many see William's visit as him stepping into the global spotlight in preparation to become king one day.
Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mr Zelensky said of last Saturday's talks with Mr Trump: "Good meeting. We discussed a lot one on one.

"Hoping for results on everything we covered. Protecting lives of our people. Full and unconditional ceasefire. Reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out. Very symbolic meeting that has potential to become historic, if we achieve joint results. Thank you."
The thank you carries extra weight after an apparent lack of gratitude became a key point of attack for Trump and his cabinet during the White House argument.
Although there were rumors the two would meet again after the Pope's funeral, it didn't happen.
Since then, Trump has expressed his belief that Ukrainian President Zelensky is prepared to give up Crimea in order to negotiate peace terms with Russia.
Speaking to reporters in
New Jersey
yesterday, he agreed when asked if he thought Zelensky was ready to "give up" the territory.
Trump mentioned that during their conversation at St. Peter's Basilica, they had "briefly" discussed the future of the Black Sea peninsula, which was invaded by Vladimir Putin's Russia in 2014.
He also urged President Putin to "stop shooting" and sign an agreement to end the ongoing war following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Last Sunday, he said about Putin: "I want him to stop shooting, sit down, and sign a deal. We have the confines of a deal, I believe, and I want him to sign it."

US officials discussed potential relocation of Palestinians to Libya

BY Libyan Express May 17, 2025 - 06:17 Updated: May 17, 2025 - 06:18 Trump administration explored Gaza-Libya resettlement plan NBC News has reported that the Trump administration has held discussions with Libyan officials regarding a possible plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Libya, according to sources including a former US official. The report states that discussions included the potential release of billions of dollars in frozen Libyan assets that have been held for over a decade. According to the sources cited, the proposal reportedly included offering financial incentives such as housing and salaries to encourage voluntary relocation. The report indicates significant logistical and financial questions remain unanswered, including implementation timeline, specific locations within Libya for settlement, and practical challenges of relocating large numbers of people. In February, President Trump made public statements envisioning Gaza as the 'Riviera of the Middle East' under 'American management,' which the report connects to these discussions. The reported discussions appear to represent a shift from previous US positions that encouraged Arab nations to assist with Gaza reconstruction while opposing permanent relocation of Palestinians. NBC News also reported that the administration had previously considered Libya as a destination for certain immigrants from the United States, though those plans encountered legal challenges. Neither the White House nor Libyan officials have provided official confirmation of these discussions at the time of reporting. The views expressed in Op-Ed pieces are those of the author and do not purport to reflect the opinions or views of Libyan Express. Stability returns to capital as diplomatic efforts intensify

BY Libyan Express May 16, 2025 - 06:00 The Algerian Foreign Ministry Headquarters Our capital has regained its normal rhythm today following yesterday's limited security incidents in the southern districts, which thankfully did not spread to other areas of the city. The swift return to stability demonstrates our citizens' strong desire for peace and normalcy, despite attempts by certain factions to destabilise the situation. Residents of affected neighborhoods reported that security forces responded promptly to contain the situation. In a show of brotherly concern, neighboring Algeria issued a statement addressing the Libyan people directly. The Algerian Foreign Ministry called on all Libyan parties to prioritize dialogue and national interests above factional considerations. 'Now more than ever, fraternal Libya needs the unity and reconciliation of all its sons — far from the logic of division and fragmentation,' the statement emphasized, reflecting the sentiments of many ordinary Libyans exhausted by years of instability. The Presidential Council continues its efforts to maintain peace, with Member Abdullah Al-Lafi meeting European Union Ambassador Nicola Orlando yesterday. Their discussions focused on strengthening the ceasefire and advancing the political process that remains our nation's best hope for lasting stability. Meanwhile, markets, schools, and government offices operated normally today, with citizens expressing relief at the quick de-escalation. 'We've seen worse days, and we'll get through this too,' said Omar Bashir, a civil servant from Abu Salim district. These incidents serve as a reminder that our path toward national reconciliation requires vigilance and commitment from all citizens. The rapid return to normalcy reflects the Libyan people's resilience and determination to reject violence as a political tool. Princess Reema Wears Custom Honayda Gown for Trump's Historic Visit to Saudi Arabia

As U.S. President Donald Trump touched down in Riyadh to kick off his Middle East tour, all eyes were not only on diplomacy but also on style — notably, the powerful sartorial statement made by Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to the United States, Her Royal Highness Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud. Marking the high-profile occasion, Princess Reema was seen wearing a bespoke royal blue gown created by celebrated Saudi designer Honayda Saleh Serafi, founder and creative director of the label Honayda. The floor-length gown, adorned with intricate Arabic and Islamic embroidery, stood out as a sophisticated blend of heritage and modern elegance. In an exclusive interview with Vogue Arabia, Honayda expressed her pride in crafting the piece: "Creating this bespoke piece for Her Royal Highness Princess Reema bint Bandar for this historic moment in Riyadh, as she welcomes President Trump, is a true honour for me. She represents the strength, progress, and boundless potential of Saudi women — a leader breaking barriers and inspiring change." The choice of royal blue was intentional, Serafi noted, symbolizing 'her power and wisdom,' while the detailed motifs woven into the fabric pay homage to Saudi Arabia's deep-rooted cultural and artistic legacy. 'It's a deeply meaningful moment for me to see her shine,' Serafi added, 'embodying the spirit of empowerment that my designs stand for.' Princess Reema, known for her trailblazing role as the Kingdom's first female ambassador and her work advocating for women's empowerment, often uses fashion as a means of quiet diplomacy — reflecting national pride and social progress through carefully curated style. This moment not only underscores the significance of Trump's visit but also highlights the evolving role of Saudi women on the global stage — where tradition, identity, and leadership meet in striking form.
