KOLKATA: Environmental activists have hailed the prompt response of the state forest department in protecting a kadam tree that was being illegally felled in a school compound in Dum Dum's Bediapara after learning of the incident from a mail sent by a citizen to the range forest officer.
A woman from the neighbourhood spotted a few woodcutters axing the 50-ft tall tree on July 26 and stopped them. She then wrote to the range forest officer after the men could not furnish any approval to cut the tree. Acting on the complaint, the forest department inspected the site the following day and stopped any further harm to the tree.
"When I wrote to the forest department, it was a formality. I was skeptical. But seeing the prompt action, I and others in the locality have been encouraged.
Three ponds in the area are under threat. One has already been partially filled up and turned into a parking area for cars. We hope to take up the fight to save these water bodies next," she said, requesting anonymity fearing backlash from local netas and dadas.

Bonani Kakkar of green activism group PUBLIC said the forest department's prompt response to the SOS from an ordinary citizen keen to preserve a tree was extremely heartening. "This will increase our belief in the system. People will know that a complaint will not be ignored but there will be a response. It will also encourage many more to fight against the destruction of greenery," she added.

Uttarakhand govt passes Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill

Taking a tough stand on illegal conversion, the Uttarakhand State Cabinet has approved the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday, under which strong provisions have been added for stringent penalties on illegal conversion, a ban on propaganda through digital media and protection of victims. The bill was passed during a meeting held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The Bill includes punishment for marriage under false identity and incitement for conversion through social media, messaging apps or any online medium, among others. The bill has broadened the definition of inducement, which includes gifts, cash/goods benefits, employment, free education, promise of marriage, hurting religious sentiments or glorifying another religion, all of which are included in the category of crime. The bill has placed a ban on the use of digital means to spread propaganda or incitement for conversion through social media, messaging apps, or any online medium, which is punishable. Under the bill, strict punishment, up to 3 to 10 years for general violation, 5 to 14 years in cases related to sensitive sections, 20 years to life imprisonment in serious cases and a heavy fine are made. The bill has made provision for protection, rehabilitation, medical, travel and maintenance expenses of the victims. The state government said that this law will protect the religious rights of citizens, prevent conversion by fraud, inducement or pressure and maintain social harmony. Earlier, on Wednesday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of Yoga Park and other development works in Kedarpuram under Dehradun Municipal Corporation. On this occasion, he launched the AI chatbot 'Nigam Sarathi' and also unveiled the document of Green Policy. Donald Trump when asked about the alleged hacking of Federal documents by Russia: They're good at it. We are …

Donald Trump (Agencies) President Donald Trump was asked about the recent hack of a computer system that holds highly sensitive federal court documents. According to a report in the New York Times, Russia is suspected to be behind the attack. Talking to reporters, Donald Trump shrugged off the alleged hacking. Trump was asked by a reporter if he would bring up the hack when he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. 'I guess I could,' Trump replied without committing to anything. 'Are you surprised, you know? Are you surprised they hack in? That's what they do.' Trump reportedly went on to add, 'They're good at it. We're good at it. We're actually better at it, but, no, I have heard about it. I have heard about it.' According to a report by Gizmodo, Trump recently told reporters that he gave Iran permission to bomb a U.S. base in Qatar, suggesting that's just the kind of thing that should be allowed. 'They said, 'We're going to shoot them. Is one o'clock OK?' I said it's fine,' Trump said during a press conference in June. 'And everybody was emptied off the base so they couldn't get hurt, except for the gunners.' Memo warns officials According to a New York Times report, quoting an internal memo, administrators with the court system recently informed Justice Department officials, clerks and chief judges in federal courts that 'persistent and sophisticated cyber threat actors have recently compromised sealed records'. 'This remains an URGENT MATTER that requires immediate action,' officials wrote, referring to guidance that the Justice Department had issued in early 2021 after the system was reportedly first infiltrated. 'Sensitive documents can be targets of interest to a range of threat actors,' the authors of last week's notice wrote. 'To better protect them, courts have been implementing more rigorous procedures to restrict access to sensitive documents under carefully controlled and monitored circumstances.' Separate parking area for VIP, police cars at airport

1 2 Kolkata: Bidhannagar police has introduced a designated free parking area for VIP and police vehicles near the old domestic terminal to prevent unauthorised parking in front of the main airport terminal. For several years, vehicles with beacons or govt identification plates were parked outside the terminal for extended periods while waiting for passengers, despite rules allowing only seven minutes of free parking in the area. The penalty for overstaying is Rs 500, but these vehicles are rarely fined. The problem increased after lane dividers with reflective strips were installed along the terminal frontage, from exit gates 1A/B to 2A/B, to direct vehicles into lanes for pick-up, drop-off, and through movement since the start of the week. TOI highlighted over the past two days how these VIP vehicles occupy the first lane, leading to traffic congestion. We are in talks with the airport authorities to install a Flight Information Display System (FIDS), which shows arrivals, departures, gates, delays, and other real-time flight details, next to the VIP parking lot so that the drivers know the exact time of the flight arrivals," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Interested in Investing? "Our officers will guide these vehicles to the terminal and ensure they no longer clog the channels," said the officer. Parking space for special cases has also been arranged at the third tier of the underground parking lot. The airport authorities and cops had tried a similar measure two years back but even then it hadn't paid off. Before the metro construction, a separate VIP parking lane existed under the elevated road to the departure terminal. This was removed to accommodate the project. On Wednesday, TOI found VIP vehicles were still parked near the terminal gates. These included state govt cars with beacons, police vehicles, and those belonging to politicians and magistrates. Some police and airport staff also parked motorcycles in the departure area. Under airport rules, vehicles can stay on the premises free for a maximum of seven minutes, with only three minutes allowed directly in front of the terminal gates. Longer stays require the use of the official parking zones. A senior airport official said the matter was discussed in coordination meetings, but the practice continues.
