Mallorca vs Barcelona: Controversies that stole the spotlight in season opener
Here's a breakdown of the most controversial moments from the clash. Ferran Torres' Goal Sparks Debate
The biggest flashpoint came in the 23rd minute. Mallorca defender Raíllo collapsed after blocking a shot from Yamal and lay motionless in the box. The referee briefly lifted the whistle to his mouth but never blew it. Barcelona continued, Yamal passed to Ferran Torres, and the forward fired home from the edge of the area.
Mallorca's bench erupted, with coach Jagoba Arrasate confronting the officials after the final whistle. Many argued that the game should have been stopped for Raíllo's injury, while others defended the decision, saying the referee never signalled for a halt. The goal stood, but the controversy had already become one of the talking points of the new season. Red Card Chaos Hits Mallorca
As frustrations boiled over, Mallorca's discipline cracked. Manu Morlanes was the first to go, picking up two yellow cards—the first for dissent and the second for a late challenge on Yamal.
Later in the second half, striker Vedat Muriqi was shown a straight red after a reckless kick caught Barça goalkeeper Joan García. Reduced to nine men, Mallorca had no way back into the match.
While the calls were technically correct, many Mallorca supporters felt the decisions came harshly and killed any chance of a comeback. Raphinha's Escape From Punishment
Tensions boiled just before halftime. During first-half stoppage time, Raphinha lunged recklessly at Mateu Jaume, leaving the Mallorca midfielder in visible pain. Many expected a red card, but the referee chose to give a yellow. This incident became one of the night's biggest talking points, fueling accusations of inconsistency in officiating.

Report – Rayo Vallecano Pushing To Bring Inter Milan Defender To La Liga
La Liga side Rayo Vallecano are pushing to sign out-of-favour Inter Milan defender Tomas Palacios. This according to Argentine outlet Mercado de Pases, via FCInterNews. Inter Milan only signed Tomas Palacios last summer. However, in his first season at the club the Argentine simply never convinced. Palacios spent the second half of last season on loan with Monza. Meanwhile, it has long looked to be a matter of when rather than if Inter would offload the 23-year-old this summer transfer window. The Nerazzurri had seemingly been close to an agreement with Swiss side Basel on a loan deal containing a purchase option. However, that never materialized. Rayo Vallecano Pushing For Inter Defender Tomas Palacios MONZA, ITALY – MARCH 02: Nikola Vlasic of Torino is challenged by Tomas Palacios of Monza during the Serie A match between Monza and Torino at U-Power Stadium on March 02, 2025 in Monza, Italy. (Photo by) According to Argentine outlet Mercado de Pases, it is La Liga side Rayo Vallecano who are now at the front of the queue for Palacios. The Spaniards would be able to guarantee regular playing time for the Argentine. That would certainly be the most important aspect of a transfer for Palacios, considering his age. Then, Mercado de Pases report, Vallecano are ready to meet Inter's terms as far as a deal. The Nerazzurri want to loan Palacios out, but include a purchase option worth €5-6 million in the deal. Furthermore, Inter reportedly don't want to lose control of Palacios's future, and want a buyback option.

Inside Barcelona: Your new weekly guide to the biggest talking points and latest info
Welcome to Inside Barcelona, a new weekly series of articles to follow throughout the 2025-26 La Liga season. Every week, we will bring you our latest information and analysis on the biggest talking points, cutting through the noisy world of all things Barca with reporting you can trust. This week, our writers Laia Cervelló Herrero and Pol Ballús explain the latest on Barca's player registration issues, their plans to finally return to the Camp Nou in September and more — including the debrief after Saturday's season-opening 3-0 away win against Real Mallorca. At Barca, there will never be just one big story of the week; there's always so many things going on… But right now, the major topics include Barca's September date for their plan to return to the Camp Nou, question marks over when all of their first team will finally be registered, and whether we might see any further departures this summer, with reserve goalkeeper Inaki Pena tipped to leave. Advertisement Since Saturday night's game, we can also add the tail-end of a controversy over Ferran Torres' goal, scored to make it 2-0 while the Mallorca captain Antonio Raillo was down on the ground having blocked a shot from Lamine Yamal with his head. Mallorca's players, coaching staff and fans were angered that the referee did not blow to stop play, and that Barca's players continued their attacking move, which ended with Torres impressively firing home. Barca manager Hansi Flick said he, too, would have been annoyed had it happened to his side, but that he always tells his players to play to the whistle. The win highlights that, despite the uncertainty around some important topics at the club, there is huge optimism at Barca for the season ahead. Following weeks of uncertainty over whether Barcelona would be able to register him in time, Rashford came on in the 69th minute. He did not look entirely comfortable in his time on the pitch, largely due to the strange circumstances of the match. While there was excitement about seeing the on-loan Manchester United and England forward, the game was practically over when he joined the action; Mallorca were down to nine players after Manu Morlanes (in the 33rd minute) and Vedat Muriqi (in the 39th) were sent off, and Barca were in cruise control, with a two-goal lead. Flick said he 'did not like' how Barca 'played at 50 per cent' against such weakened opponents. He said it 'wasn't a good half' for Rashford to perform 'because there were no spaces'. That Flick doesn't shy away from making bold decisions, and that he really knows how to manage this dressing room. The German is clear and careful with every step he takes and does not mind benching players to make way for others, even if it may seem unpopular. The message he sends is very important for the team: that it is governed by meritocracy. Advertisement The latest example came on Saturday, with the selection of Eric Garcia rather than Jules Kounde at right-back. This was not because the Frenchman had done anything wrong; Flick simply preferred Garcia because he saw him as the player in better form (according to dressing-room sources, who, like all cited here, prefer to remain anonymous as they did not have permission to comment). Flick is firmly in the driver's seat entering his second season as coach and the players have bought into his ways and respect him. The aim is to feel that he has not 11 first-team players, but 21. The win in Palma also provided a lesson that it is better not to provoke Yamal. Jan Salas confronted him after a play late in the match and soon after, the 18-year-old scored a great goal (Barca's third) to add gloss to the victory. It looks like provoking Yamal is similar to pouring fuel on a fire. With the match about to end, he danced away from three defenders before curling a brilliant shot home from the edge of the box. He celebrated with a gesture of putting a crown on his head. After the end (we think) of the soap opera between Marc-Andre ter Stegen and the club, more drama came with the unexpected departure of Inigo Martinez, one of Barca's key pieces in defence last term. This week, the player explained his decision to sign for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, in an interview with Spanish radio station Onda Vasca. 'Looking at my career and what I've achieved, it was the right time to take this step,' the 34-year-old Martinez said. 'These opportunities only come around once, if they come at all, and it's difficult to say no. No one is prepared to see this type of contract. When they put it to you, you don't believe it.' Martinez said Flick was 'taken aback' when he told the coach of his plans to leave while they were on the plane back from the pre-season tour to Japan and South Korea. 'He was sad, he had a lot of affection for me, it was mutual,' the centre-back added. More registrations, and hopefully some movement on the plans to return to the Camp Nou for Barca's first home game of the season, which La Liga has already agreed to put back until the fourth round of fixtures in mid-September. Advertisement Barca's priority was to register Rashford and goalkeeper Joan Garcia in time for their opening match. With Ter Stegen injured and the returning Wojciech Szczesny not yet registered either, having signed a new contract in July after his initial short-term from last September expired. Pena was Flick's only real choice as goalkeeper until the end of last week — and the 26-year-old has long been earmarked for a departure. Rashford, meanwhile, was a real priority for Flick, with Robert Lewandowski out injured and turning 37 this Thursday. Both Garcia and Rashford were finally registered on Saturday, ahead of the evening kick-off with Mallorca. The club managed to create space under their salary limit by taking the drastic — but not uncommon, for them — step of arranging a bank guarantee worth €7million (£6m, $8.2m), with club executives putting their own personal wealth at risk as part of it. Also key in sorting the registrations was the renewal of Jules Kounde's contract until 2030. This allowed them to budget the amortisation of his transfer fee over a longer period. And Ter Stegen's anticipated lengthy injury absence played a factor too: Barca were allowed to transfer some of his salary space to a new registration. La Liga gave the final OK on Saturday morning — while the team were flying to Mallorca. But Barca still need to register defender Gerard Martin (whose previous registration as a youth player has expired), another new signing Roony Bardghji and Szczesny. With 19-year-old Bardghji, they ideally want to register him with the first team but are also considering doing so as a youth player initially if the situation becomes complicated. If that is the case, he would still be eligible to play for the first team, as Martin had been. Barca sources have said all summer long that their expectation is for all signings to be registered. They have until the transfer deadline on September 1 to do so, or the players concerned will have to sit out until the window opens again in January. The club have also always stressed that the key to bringing themselves in line with La Liga's salary limit rules lies with their sale of future proceeds from executive boxes at the Camp Nou for €100million in December 2024. This money has so far not had the approval from auditors which La Liga says it must receive before it can be applied towards its calculation of Barca's salary limit. Last week, a club source told The Athletic they expected that to be approved 'either this week or next'. As for the Camp Nou itself, Barcelona's plan is to be there, with a reduced capacity, for their first home La Liga fixture of the season, currently scheduled for September 14 against Valencia. The last public update on this from the club came over a week ago now, when vice-president Elena Fort told Catalan station TV3: 'We are close. We have been working with the city council over the last few weeks and months, and we are working to return as soon as possible.' Advertisement Barca originally intended to get back to a refurbished Camp Nou last November and still don't have the licences required to stage matches there, less than a month from their next planned return. But they hope to receive the first occupancy licence to re-open what will be a 105,000-seat stadium, at just over a quarter of that capacity, in the coming weeks. Spot the pattern.
