Martinez said Flick was 'taken aback' when he told the coach of his plans to leave while they were on the plane back from the pre-season tour to Japan and South Korea. 'He was sad, he had a lot of affection for me, it was mutual,' the centre-back added. More registrations, and hopefully some movement on the plans to return to the Camp Nou for Barca's first home game of the season, which La Liga has already agreed to put back until the fourth round of fixtures in mid-September. With Ter Stegen injured and the returning Wojciech Szczesny not yet registered either, having signed a new contract in July after his initial short-term from last September expired. Pena was Flick's only real choice as goalkeeper until the end of last week — and the 26-year-old has long been earmarked for a departure. Rashford, meanwhile, was a real priority for Flick, with Robert Lewandowski out injured and turning 37 this Thursday. Both Garcia and Rashford were finally registered on Saturday, ahead of the evening kick-off with Mallorca. The club managed to create space under their salary limit by taking the drastic — but not uncommon, for them — step of arranging a bank guarantee worth €7million (£6m, $8.2m), with club executives putting their own personal wealth at risk as part of it. Also key in sorting the registrations was the renewal of Jules Kounde's contract until 2030. This allowed them to budget the amortisation of his transfer fee over a longer period. And Ter Stegen's anticipated lengthy injury absence played a factor too: Barca were allowed to transfer some of his salary space to a new registration. La Liga gave the final OK on Saturday morning — while the team were flying to Mallorca. But Barca still need to register defender Gerard Martin (whose previous registration as a youth player has expired), another new signing Roony Bardghji and Szczesny. With 19-year-old Bardghji, they ideally want to register him with the first team but are also considering doing so as a youth player initially if the situation becomes complicated. If that is the case, he would still be eligible to play for the first team, as Martin had been. Barca sources have said all summer long that their expectation is for all signings to be registered. They have until the transfer deadline on September 1 to do so, or the players concerned will have to sit out until the window opens again in January. The club have also always stressed that the key to bringing themselves in line with La Liga's salary limit rules lies with their sale of future proceeds from executive boxes at the Camp Nou for €100million in December 2024. This money has so far not had the approval from auditors which La Liga says it must receive before it can be applied towards its calculation of Barca's salary limit. Last week, a club source told The Athletic they expected that to be approved 'either this week or next'. As for the Camp Nou itself, Barcelona's plan is to be there, with a reduced capacity, for their first home La Liga fixture of the season, currently scheduled for September 14 against Valencia. The last public update on this from the club came over a week ago now, when vice-president Elena Fort told Catalan station TV3: 'We are close. We have been working with the city council over the last few weeks and months, and we are working to return as soon as possible.'
