Zach Braff quit job after landing Scrubs role

Perth Now2 days ago

Zach Braff quit his job as soon as he was cast in Scrubs.
The 50-year-old actor shot to fame playing Dr. John 'J.D.' Dorian in the medical sitcom - which ran from 2001 to 2010 - and although he was initially only hired for the pilot episode, he was happy to quit his steady work as a waiter because after living "frugally" for so long, he knew he could survive on just that one paycheque.
Speaking at the ATX TV Festival, People magazine reports he said: 'I got Scrubs after six auditions. I was driving home and I put the Motorola StarTAC on the passenger seat, my phone rang and it was Bill [Lawrence, creator] and he said 'you got it' and I was so thrilled and my life was going to change.
'Even if it was just the pilot, my life was changed forever because I was living so frugally."
Zach called him mom, dad, and the manager of the restaurant to tell them he had secured the job - but he was told he still needed to work that evening.
He said: 'The manager said 'I am so happy for you, but you have to work tonight.' And I got hammered, and I was the worst waiter ever. I quit the job, and my Mom said, 'Why did you quit? What if it's just the pilot?'
"I had been living so frugally and said, 'Do you know how long I could live off of the money of this pilot?' Like I had it dialled to live off like $12,000 a year, so from the pilot I was like, 'I'm rich!' "
Zach recently confirmed he will be returning to the role in a Scrubs reboot, with creator Bill Lawrence previously explaining old faces will be joined by new cast members.
He told Deadline: "We've been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo.
"A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it's a calling.
"There's no cliché 'rich doctors playing golf' — that's not what it is anymore. So I think that, no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things."

Sydney Sweeney details 'crazy' transformation to play Christy Martin in biopic

Sydney Sweeney didn't fit into any of her clothes after she gained around 30lbs to play Christy Martin in a new biopic. The Euphoria actress is to star as the former professional boxer in an as-yet untitled movie, and Sweeney has told how she underwent a "crazy" transformation to get into character. Speaking to W Magazine, she said: "I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. "I started eating. "My body was completely different. "I didn't fit in any of my clothes. I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. "My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! "I was like, 'Oh my god.' But it was amazing. I was so strong, like crazy strong." As well as eating more, the 'White Lotus' star had to train hard for the role, revealing she hit the weights for two hours a day and kickboxed for two hours. She added: "I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour." Fans first discovered Sweeney had been cast to portray the boxing trailblazer, who has been described by producers as the "female Rocky", in May 2024. Speaking about the movie, the 'Anyone But You' star told Deadline at the time: "Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes, and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse. "I'm passionate about the fighting world, Christy's story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. "I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn't allow it to defeat her. It's powerful, and emotional." Training for the movie wasn't Sweeney's first foray into kickboxing. She explained: "I grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old. I've been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body. "Christy's story isn't a light one, it's physically and emotionally demanding, there's a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself."

Tom Felton supported by Daniel Radcliffe while preparing for Broadway debut in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Tom Felton is happy he's had Daniel Radcliffe to "hold [his] hand" as he prepares for his Broadway debut. The 37-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as Draco Malfoy for a stint in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and while he's never appeared on the New York stage before, his Harry Potter co-star - who played the titular boy wizard in all eight films - has starred in five productions so has been only too happy to offer help and guidance to his friend. Speaking on the red carpet at the Tony Awards in New York on Sunday (08.06.25), Tom told People magazine: "My old school chum, Potter, Radcliffe, has done quite a bit of Broadway, so he's holding my hand and certainly helping me through all the things that are hard to learn. "But from what I gather, it's an amazing community of people. The fans are really, really gracious and excited. So I'm just thrilled to be part of it." Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set 19 years after the end of the main series, and Tom is "excited" to explore new sides to Draco now he is an adult. He said: "I just never saw myself having blonde hair again and reprising that role. Now as a dad, Draco has a son. So yes, it is an old character, but in a very new set of circumstances. I'm excited to explore it." The actor admitted he is a "huge fan of the show" and has seen the play "a dozen times, mainly in England and a few times now on Broadway." Tom - who will be performing in the show from November 11, 2025, until March 22, 2026 - recently admitted he "immediately cried" when he put on his character's distinctive blonde wig for the first time. He told "It's very, very easy to get emotional. 'When they put my blonde wig on for the theatre production, I just immediately cried. It was just sort of like a blast from the past.' Presale tickets for the show featuring Tom will be available on June 10 at 11am EST. Tickets for the general public will go on sale on June 12 at 11am EST.

Alex Winter teases 'very personal' reunion with Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves had a "crazy, inspired idea" that led to him and Alex Winter reuniting on Broadway. The Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure stars are set to appear in a revival of Waiting for Godot and Alex - who will play Vladimir opposite Keanu as Estragon in the adaptation of Samuel Beckett's classic work - credits his friend for their reunion. Speaking on the red carpet at the Tony Awards in New York City on Sunday (08.06.25), Alex told People magazine he and Keanu had "wanted to work together" again. He added: "We have known each other a very long time — [which is fitting for] a play about two people who have known each other a very long time. ... And Keanu had this crazy, inspired idea that suddenly turned into reality, for both of us." And Alex, 59, teased the production is "very, very personal" to himself and Keanu, 60. Asked what fans can expect from Waiting For Godot, he said: "I think every time the play is done, it's different, because of who's playing it. It's very, very personal, and so we're bringing ourselves to it." The two stars previously admitted they find it easy to work together because of their friendship. In a video conversation with director Jamie Lloyd about Waiting for Godot shared with People magazine, Alex said: "It's like being in a band together. We kind of know each other's rhythms. "Being able to bring that into, onto a stage, that's sort of our fundamental. That's in our bones away." Keanu added: "The films that we did together, the Bill and Ted films, the language in those films had the architecture and their rhythms. "Even from early days, we approached them theatrically or even commedia dell'arte, 'Okay, I do something, you do something, I get the ball, you get the ball.' " "That's why, in the audition, we were so vibed. Because you didn't get that from other actors so much." Waiting for Godot begins previews at the Hudson Theater in New York on 13 September ahead of a limited run from 28 September to 4 January.
