
Gopher tortoises find new home on Florida coast after astonishing journey to flee hurricane
Dozens of gopher tortoises survived a perilous sea crossing after being swept from their homes during Hurricane Helene last summer, and are enjoying a new lease of life on a remote stretch of Florida coastline.
Rangers at Fort de Soto county park near St Petersburg say that before the September storm only eight of the vulnerable species were known to be living there.
Now, after their astonishing journey, a count last month confirmed 84 active burrows, suggesting the tortoises quickly adapted to their new habitat after their enforced eviction from Egmont Key national wildlife refuge, a tiny island more than two miles west that was pummeled by the category 4 hurricane.
As well as sparking a surge of interest in the park in the form of visitors keen to catch a glimpse of the unexpected new arrivals, the tortoises are also providing benefits for some of the animals that already lived in the 1,100-acre (445-hectare) environment.
'They're a keystone species, which means they share their burrows with other species, and there's been something like 250 different species recorded as living in gopher tortoise burrows,' said Anna Yu, a Fort De Soto ranger who has assumed responsibility for the roving reptiles' wellbeing.
'Everybody in the ecosystem benefits from gopher tortoises being there, and we'll hopefully see an increase in biodiversity in the park. Because we have all these new burrows, other animals are able to use them, like eastern diamondback snakes, black racers, all kinds of different reptiles.
'The last time a gopher frog was listed as being one of the species in the park was in 2016 so it's really cool to think that maybe some of these really imperiled species that rely on gopher tortoise burrows to survive might make their way back.
'I don't expect to see frogs popping up everywhere, but there's certainly more of a chance than before this happened.'
Yu and her colleagues knew the tortoises had come across the water from Egmont Key because biologists from St Petersburg's Eckerd College, who were studying them, drilled small holes in their shells as identification markings.
Tortoises are poor swimmers, and many would likely have drowned. At least 40 were discovered washed up dead. But the survivors, she said, would have floated and been carried on the surface as Helene's winds whipped the water surging towards the beaches of the mainland.
'The whole event was just sheer luck that they ended up at Fort De Soto and not out at sea, or at some of the other beaches north of St Pete Beach and Treasure Island, really popular beaches that don't have the habitat to support these creatures,' she said.
'It could have turned out a lot differently for them.'
Their behaviors since washing ashore have also fascinated observers. Some of the tortoises, presumably traumatized by their hazardous odyssey, burrowed deep into higher elevations. The majority of the burrows, Yu said, were dug beyond Helen's storm surge line.
'It's like they knew exactly where to go, they went a little bit higher in hopes of not being drowned out by another storm. There's a little bit of intelligence there,' she said.
Even more exciting are the mating behaviors some of the tortoises have exhibited, suggesting a new generation of gopher tortoises will soon be plodding around.
'It's a sign they're thriving. Being able to mate is a sign of success,' she said.
'The main point in all this is that we want to make sure Fort De Soto is, above all, a wild place and home to an abundance of wildlife that depends on the people that come through, depends on their respect and all of our collective stewardship of their habitat to survive.
'I think this is a really ecologically important event. It's a feel good story too, of course, but it's also very critically important environmentally.'

Trump officials gut 25 centers that monitor flooding and drought in the US
The Trump administration has ordered the closure of 25 scientific centers that monitor US waters for flooding and drought, and manage supply levels to ensure communities around the country don't run out of water. The United States Geological Service (USGS) water science centers' employees and equipment track levels and quality in ground and surface water with thousands of gauges. The data it produces plays a critical role across the economy to protect human life, protect property, maintain water supplies and help clean up chemical or oil spills. The targeted centers are part of a larger network, and the Trump administration based its decision to make cuts based on leases near expiration, not scientific reasoning, said Kyla Bennett, director of science policy with the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility non-profit that's tracking the issue. The administration has not indicated a plan to fill the holes left by those that closed. 'It's not being done with any thought about human life, it was just 'this seems so woke so let's get rid of it,'' Bennett said. 'People think water is free and comes out of your tap whenever you want, but it's not that simple.' The Trump administration has made few details available, but the leases were ordered cancelled by the General Service Administration, said a water center employee who requested anonymity to speak freely without retribution. They learned about the closure from their landlord, and centers from Alaska to Massachusetts will begin shuttering within four months. 'We're doing everything we can to make the argument that we need these facilities to complete our mission,' the employee said, but added that the groups are in a difficult position to push back. Among the centers' most important functions is their role in flood warnings. USGS monitors water levels in a river and shares that data with the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS determines if the precipitation levels in a coming storm combined with water levels in a river will result in flooding or top a dam. If there's a risk, flood warnings are issued. It's also critical to state emergency response agencies and the Federal Emergency Management (Fema) responses to floods. Among the centers on the chopping block is that in Charlotte, North Carolina, which managed the fallout from widespread and deadly late 2024 Hurricane Helene flooding in Asheville. The centers also measure water levels in aquifers to ensure utilities and industry aren't overdrawing them, which could cause communities to not have water. The monitors and data also inform states' droughts declarations, which triggers limits on withdrawals, and water conservation requirements. That is especially important in the drought-plagued west. Among those targeted for closure is the Moab, Utah, center, which measures snowpack and other water resources in a state 77% under drought. Bennett noted even much of Massachusetts is under drought conditions and limits for lawn watering are in place. Privatization is possible, they added, but the USGS has in place rigorous data quality standards that likely could not be copied by a company. States also use the data to protect drinking water quality, and manage pollution discharge permits. During drought conditions, streams can dry up and discharges have to be reined in. If not small streams may entirely be made up of industrial discharge, Bennett said. When oil or chemical spills happen, the USGS data is used to protect drinking water by tracking plumes with real time monitors in some locations. They have also provided comprehensive pictures of where PFAS 'forever chemical' pollution plumes are contaminating the country's aquifers. The data is also used by state and local officials, emergency responders, water system operators, road and building designers, construction companies, city planners, conservation commissions and many others for economic purposes. However, local governments are not equipped to take over. The facilities include boats, scientific equipment, machine shops and field vehicles, and it's unclear what the fate of those, the employees and the water monitors they manage might be. The USGS did not respond to a request for comment, but an earlier press statement said: 'These efforts reflect our broader commitment to streamlining government operations while ensuring that scientific endeavors remain strong, effective, and impactful.'

Fresh evidence of global warming - as politicians question climate action
Fresh evidence today has set out how quickly the Earth's climate is changing - in some places so fast it has shocked scientists. The new report arrives as the UK's long-standing political consensus on tackling climate change fractures - with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch questioning the necessary pace of climate action - and as President Donald Trump seeks to scrap US climate rules. The new analysis from the United Nations's World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) today found that 2024 was the hottest on records going back 175 years. Each of the last 10 years has been in the top 10 warmest years on record - a trend that is unprecedented, as previously such a time period has always been punctuated by colder years. "That has never happened before, going back to 1850," said Prof Chris Hewitt, director of climate services at the WMO. The team were also shocked by the way the final months of 2024 remained hot, even as the natural warming effect of the transient El Nino weather phenomenon subsided. The fact the "warmth continued for so long" even the world moved to more neutral conditions after El Nino has been "really quite extraordinary" said Dr John Kennedy, lead author of the WMO's State of the Global Climate Report for 2024. It also found: Concentrations of carbon dioxide - the key driver of global warming - are at the highest levels in the last 800,000 years. Each of the past eight years has smashed new records for heat in the oceans The 18 lowest levels of sea ice in the Arctic in summer have all been in the past 18 years Glaciers have lost more ice in the last three years than in any other three-year period on record The rate of sea level rise has doubled since satellite measurements began. The UK Met Office's Prof Stephen Belcher said the earth is "profoundly ill. Many of the vital signs are sounding alarms". The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the planet is "issuing more distress signals" and urged leaders to "step up" with new national climate plans due this year. Meanwhile, some leaders are going cold on climate action, with President Trump pulling the US out of the Paris Agreement, and Argentina walking away from global talks last year. However, the UK's climate envoy on Tuesday struck a more optimistic note, saying other countries are still talking about how to go green, not if they should. China, the world's largest emitter, installed more wind and solar power last year than ever before, and in 2023 as much solar power as the world combined. But last year's heat drove extreme weather events that forced more people from their homes than in any year since 2008, destroying critical infrastructure, forests, farmland and biodiversity too. In the United States, Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought damage costing tens of billions of dollars and killed more than 200 people. 3:36 Tropical Cyclone Chido killed at least 100 and inflicted costly damage on Mozambique, Malawi and French island Mayotte. It displaced around 100,000 people in Mozambique. Bob Ward, from the London School of Economics's climate institute, said: "This analysis shows that even the United States, the richest country in the world, cannot escape these growing impacts... which are causing suffering for increasing numbers of Americans."
