Eleven people stabbed at a Walmart in Michigan, suspect in custody

At least 11 people have been stabbed at a Walmart in the US state of Michigan, in what the county sheriff says appears to have been a random act of violence.
A suspect is in custody and six of the victims are in a critical condition, according to authorities in Traverse City, in the state's north.
"Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn't more," Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters gathered at the scene.
He added that the weapon used in the attack appeared to have been a folding-style knife, and that the suspect was believed to have been a Michigan resident.
Emergency vehicles and uniformed first responders were seen outside the department store following the incident.
Tiffany DeFell, 36, who lives in Honor, about 40 kilometres from Traverse City, said she was in the car park when she saw chaos erupt around her.
"It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out," she said.
"This is something you see out of the movies. It's not what you expect to see where you're living."
A spokesperson for Munson Healthcare, which runs the region's largest hospital, said 11 people were being treated for stab wounds, with six of them critical and five in a serious condition as of Saturday evening, local time.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was getting updates from police about the "horrible news".
"Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence," she said.
Walmart also said in a statement it would continue to work closely with law enforcement in the investigation.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in a social media post that bureau officials were responding to "provide any necessary support".
Traverse City is a popular vacation spot on the coast of Lake Michigan, in the state's north.
It is known for its cherry festival, wineries and lighthouses, and is about 40 kilometres east of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Thai gunman kills five people at Bangkok market before taking own life, police say

A gunman has shot and killed five people at a popular fresh food market in Thailand before killing himself, local police say. The victims included security guards at the Or Tor Kor market in the Chatuchak district in Bangkok, according to a police statement. The Erawan Medical Center, which coordinates emergency medical services, reported two women were also injured. The market, next to the sprawling Chatuchak Market, carries all sorts of goods and is popular with Thai and foreign tourists. A video circulating online reportedly showed the shooter wearing a baseball cap and shorts walking in the market with a backpack strapped to his chest and a handgun in his right hand. Police said they were probing details about the suspect, including his motivation. Police General Kitrat Phanphet, chief of the national police force, said he has ordered city police to carry out their investigation quickly and gather all evidence, including closed-circuit video footage. Gun violence is not unusual in Thailand, which has fairly restrictive laws but also a high level of gun ownership. The last mass shooting incident in Bangkok was in October 2023, when a teenage boy, using a modified blank pistol, shot more than half a dozen people at the Paragon shopping mall in the city's main shopping district, killing three. One of the country's worst mass killings occurred in October 2022 in the north-eastern province of Nong Bua Lamphua, when a police sergeant, who had lost his job, used guns and knives to kill 36 people, including two dozen toddlers at a day care centre. In February 2020, a disgruntled Thai army soldier shot and killed 29 people, most at a shopping mall in the north-eastern city of Nakhon Ratchasima, before he was killed by police after an 18-hour stand-off. Health minister sounds alarm over arson attacks after another tobacconist destroyed by fire

The NSW health minister has raised concerns about a string of tobacconists burning down after a business in his local electorate was destroyed in suspicious circumstances at the weekend. About 40 firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW responded to the blaze which ripped through the Russell Street retail outlet at around 7:00pm on Sunday. Three residents were evacuated from a nearby unit block as firefighters worked to stop the flames spreading to neighbouring buildings. In a statement, police said there were no injuries and the fire was being treated as suspicious. The shop was destroyed. The incident occurred in the local electorate of NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park. The Member for Keira said "alleged arsonists" could be responsible for the blaze. "This is extremely concerning for me both as a local member and as a resident," he said. The fire comes a month after another tobacconist in Ettalong on the NSW Central Coast was destroyed in an arson attack. Mr Park said some tobacco shops had been associated with organised crime. "If we don't get on top of this and we continue to see the proliferation of these stores popping up all over the place, that's bad news for the community and terrible for our local towns," Mr Park said. The incident came just 24 hours after the NSW government announced tougher laws to crack down on the sale of illicit tobacco and vaping goods. Under the new legislation, an offence involving the commercial possession of illicit tobacco carries a maximum fine of more than $1.5 million and up to seven years imprisonment. The changes will also grant health inspectors the authority to close premises found to be in breach of the rules. Mr Park said the new laws were necessary. "That's the type of legislation that we are bringing in, that we have to bring in, because we have to get on top of this issue," he said. Police have urged anyone with information or footage of the incident that might help their investigation to contact Crime Stoppers.
