Raiders joint practice with 49ers recap: Player, coach, team rivalries renewed
When the Raiders took the practice field Thursday, they did so with some company. And some competition. The 49ers were on hand for joint practices, giving both teams some of the most valuable practice reps of their entire camp. They can face each other every day, but facing another team and getting all new looks is how they really test themselves. And unlike a game setting – which will happen on Saturday – they can have the freedom to work on what they need to work on most and be coached in the moment. After some drills and one-on-ones, team sessions got going. First play from scrimmage, fans on hand got to see Ashton Jeanty break off a huge run. DJ Glaze was pulled from right tackle to the left guard gap to block. Jeanty followed him and made a quick cut inside and was gone. It was a good start to the day. The kind of thing the Raiders hope to see a lot this season. In classic Raiders style, after the Raiders had the 49ers ready to stop the run, they went deep. Geno Smith aired it out for Dont'e Thornton who had gotten a step on two defenders. But Thornton seemed to slow up when trying to track the ball and watched the ball go just beyond his fingertips. He also failed to get a back shoulder throw a short time later. So, not a great day for him. Thornton was on the receiving end of a 'welcome to the NFL' moment when he caught a short pass and was popped by All Pro linebacker Fred Warner. Thornton jumped up like he wanted to say something, but instantly thought better of it and trotted back to the offense. Warner later had a breakup on a pass intended for Brock Bowers. No easy task. And Geno Smith was reminded quickly of the dominant linebacker he had to face off against the past four years in Seattle. Something he said that reignited what he remembered most about the rivalry with the 49ers. 'Anytime I step out there and I got 54 on the other side,' said Smith. 'I know what he brings to the table, I know the type of competitor he is, I know the type of player he is. So, whenever Fred's out there and we're going head-to-head, it feels like the same games we were playing when I was in Seattle. It's always just the best on best. I know he's going to have his guys ready, he knows I'm gonna have my guys ready and may the best man win.' Pete Carroll coached against the 49ers as a rival for 14 years in Seattle. But Carroll comes from the Bay Area, so he also has the perspective of the old Raiders/49ers Bay Area rivalry. Despite the ties and the rivalries, there were no big fights on the day, which was exactly what Carroll had hoped for from his team. "Both sides wanted the same thing," Pete Carroll said of the lack of fights. "Wanted to make sure that that's not part of what we're doing. That's not part of what we came here to do. We came here to play football and get better. And I think both sides did a great job of showing that." There were a couple moments when things got a tad heated, though. The first moment came from Raheem Mostert who spent six seasons in San Francisco, where he faced this defense in practice every day. At 33, Mostert still has plenty of juice and plenty to prove in that regard. As such, the first time in the day that there was a bit of a skirmish, it was Mostert going at it with a couple 49ers players after a punt return. Back on offense, things got a bit shaky. Geno missed Jakobi Meyers on an out route. Then he looked for his speedy deep threat, Tre Tucker, only to have Tucker drop the pass. Geno would right the ship, finding Jakobi on a cross with Decommodore Lenoir in coverage, then Brock Bowers for a leaping grab and finishing it off with a Meyers TD pass. But another pass to Tucker led to another drop. Tre was clearly in his head about it, so Geno made a bee line to him, gave him some words of encouragement, tapping his helmet and hitting his chest to let him know they still had faith in him. 'There's gonna be ups and downs in this game,' Geno said when asked about pumping up Tre after the drops. 'You're never going to be perfect. We strive for perfection, but we're all human. The main thing whenever a guy makes a mistake or anything happens out there that we don't want to happen, it's about showing that we have each others' back. So whenever you can go up to a guy and pat him on the back or give him a word of encouragement, that's what we're here for. And they do it for me also. It's not just a one-way street, it's a two-way street. I just want to continue to breathe life into my guys because we got some really really good players and they work extremely hard. So when they mess up, it's ok, we move onto the next play and keep going.' The pep talk worked because a short time later, Geno found Tucker in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. With Tucker's confidence restored, a bit later he got behind Lenoir deep and Geno launched one for him to go get. And go get it he did. The ball came down in the back corner of the end zone and Tucker laid out to haul it in for the touchdown. Geno would also find Collin Johnson on a deep touchdown on a post route. The second team offense saw Aidan O'Connell connect quite a few times with Phillip Dorsett and Shedrick Jackson. On defense, the story was again about Kyu Blu Kelly, who continues to see increased time with the first team, coming in to replace rookie Darien Porter. "He's had plays every day for about the last five-six days out here. A lot in the game too," Pete Carroll said of Kelly. "He's just really active, he just seems like he's really settling in. His aggressive style of play is really showing up." Other notable defensive moments saw Malcolm Koonce get a sack and Greedy Vance have a couple pass breakups. Eric Stokes gave up a touchdown catch to Kyle Juszczyk. From here the next stop is the second preseason game Saturday at Allegiant. Pete Carroll said earlier this week that we should see a lot more from the Raiders starters than the one drive we saw last week. So, all this is to be continued.
