Canadian airlines revamp offerings as travellers ditch U.S. vacations

A steep decline in Canadian travel to the U.S. has dealt a blow to airlines that usually cash in on popular Florida beach vacations and family trips to Disneyland.
That's left airlines scrambling to adjust their summer schedules, trim U.S. flight capacity and add more seats to destinations within Canada and overseas.
WestJet, for example, says it has scaled back some capacity between Canada and the U.S. and shifted its summer schedule to redeploy aircraft to "markets of strength," including Europe and sun destinations.
"The current political environment and differences in currency exchange rates are likely contributing to the shift in demand," said WestJet spokesperson Josh Yeats.
Air Canada says that, as of mid-March, transborder bookings were down about 10 per cent for the next six-month period. The airline said it is adjusting some of its U.S. flights by using smaller aircraft and reducing certain frequencies.
Porter Airlines, which has significantly increased its service to the U.S. over the past year, has slightly reduced its summer service into the U.S. and shifted some capacity to domestic markets.
While airlines frequently tweak their schedules, it's unusual to see such a significant dip in demand for Canada-U.S. travel, said Mike Arnot, a spokesperson for airline analytics firm Cirium.
"It's a tough place for the airlines to be," said Arnot.
Cirium analyzes data from third-party sources like travel agencies and booking websites, Arnot said. It found that summer bookings between major Canadian cities and popular U.S. destinations are down nearly 20 per cent compared to last year.
Conversely, bookings for the month of July between popular Canadian destinations are trending up by about 11 per cent compared to last year.
Arnot noted that because the data comes from third-party sites rather than directly from airlines — and not all airlines book through these sites — the analysis reflects overall trends rather than precise airline capacity.
At the Calgary International Airport, travellers told CBC News they're steering clear of the U.S. this summer.
"We have family in the States that we won't see for a while, or we'll meet them elsewhere because we're trying to put our dollars and cents elsewhere," said Yael Staav, who was on her way back to Toronto after a weekend in Calgary.
Bruna Machado, en route to Brazil to visit family, said once she returns she plans to stick close to home.
"We're not going to the U.S., we're staying in Canada [to] enjoy the summer here," said Machado.
Canadian fare war
As many Canadians reconsider their U.S. travel plans, some airlines have also added new capacity to Europe. Air Canada added a new summer service between Montreal and Edinburgh and ramped up service to Paris, Rome and Athens.
WestJet has also added new service from Halifax to Barcelona and Amsterdam.
Discover Airlines, which is owned by German carrier Lufthansa, anticipated that more Europeans will visit Canada this summer on its new Munich-Calgary route — and it hopes Canadians will do the same.
"[The Munich airport] has very short connecting times, very short flights to other destinations in Europe," CEO Bernd Bauer told CBC News at a recent news conference in Calgary. "It's great to travel there."
However, airlines are somewhat limited in their ability to redeploy U.S.-destined flights to overseas routes, said aviation expert John Gradek.
North American flights usually use narrow-bodied planes that can't make it from west of Quebec to continental Europe, he said.
That means there are limited opportunities to redeploy these aircraft anywhere other than the Canadian market, which could lead to an oversupply of Canadian seats during the summer travel season.
"My forecast is that we're going to be looking at probably a price war, starting sometime around the beginning of May," he said.
Arnot also suggested that airlines might slash prices to entice Canadians into taking U.S.-bound flights that can't be cancelled.
Although travel demand is being dampened by the low Canadian dollar and possible recession fears, "you might be able to get a relatively inexpensive trip to New York," Arnot noted.

B.C.'s spot prawn season is ending this week, with live prawns selling at around $20 to $25 a pound. This spring's season began in mid-May and lasted less than a month. Domestic buyers like Jang make up only a small share of the market, but this year it was an important one, with China's 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian seafood putting a pinch on exports. China has recently bought more than 80 per cent of B.C.'s prawn exports, and Christina Burridge, executive director of the B.C. Seafood Alliance, said the March 20 tariffs were a 'real problem' for fishermen and exporters. 'Chinese customers don't want to pay that tariff. So, they expect that the fishermen here and the exporters will reduce their prices by at least 25 per cent, but it's impossible,' said Burridge. Mike Atkins, executive director with the Pacific Prawn Fishermen's Association, said the Chinese tariffs were the latest burden on fishermen, as the cost of bait and fishing supplies increased. 'Our exporters this year are trying to shift markets a little bit, because it's tough to get it to China with the price, so they're trying to shift back to Japan, which (once) was our main market for spot prawns,' said Atkins. 'It is really tough for the fishermen this year.' About 1,500 to 2,000 tonnes of B.C. spot prawns are landed each year, and about 80 to 90 per cent are typically exported, said Atkins. The B.C. Agriculture and Food Ministry said the combined value of the province's prawn and shrimp exports were more than $98 million in 2023, with China buying 78 per cent. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham said in a statement that tariffs were 'extremely challenging for our seafood sector,' and the province would 'continue to find new markets so that B.C. companies can thrive.' Lynette Kershaw of Prawns on the Spot in Richmond said their spot prawn products usually go to the public, but they also sell a certain portion of their frozen catch to the French Creek Fresh Seafood market in Parksville, which exports to Asia. 'I think with the tariffs, and just with the world situation right now, we have had a slowdown in selling that frozen product, so that will impact us,' said Kershaw, who has been selling spot prawns on Steveston Fisherman's Wharf for six years. But there hadn't been any slowdown in sales from local customers at the wharf. 'I think that's because the people who enjoy spot prawns know that it's a local delicacy. They know that it's a very short amount of time … I think people just want to treat themselves,' said Kershaw. Back at False Creek, fisherman Stewart McDonald and his crew were doling out bags of kicking prawns from a blue tank. Among those patiently waiting for a meal was a heron that the fishermen said was named Frank, prowling the wharf, and a plump harbour seal named Sparky, bobbing in the water and waiting for a handout. McDonald has spent 20 years harvesting spot prawns and selling them at the wharf. He said he can't complain about the market due to huge demand from loyal local customers queuing for a taste. Spot prawn season didn't use to be a big deal, but now it's celebrated, said McDonald. 'It's kind of like turned into a social event, like go wine-tasting or pick apples or berries,' he said. 'People look forward to this prawn season because it's only a short time, and it's earlier than most of the crops. The berries and the fruit hasn't come out yet, but the prawns are incredible … and people love them.' McDonald pointed out a particularly loyal customer, Dragon Watanabe, dragging a five-pound bucket of prawns to his car. He said he was buying for his uncle's restaurant — and issued a spontaneous invitation to see them prepared by 'a legend.' Watanabe's uncle, it turns out, is 75-year-old chef Hidekazu Tojo, reputed as the inventor of the California roll, and one of the most famous Japanese chefs in Canada. His restaurant, Tojo's, goes through 20 to 25 pounds of spot prawns from McDonald's boat each day during the season. 'Stewart brought us very high-quality ingredients, that's why I respect him, we are good friends,' said Tojo of a 20-year relationship that has included going out on McDonald's boat. In the kitchen, Tojo dropped three prawns into a pot of boiling water for precisely one minute and 45 seconds — any longer and the meat would be tough, he said. He lifted them out and gently peeled them, dressing them with a vinaigrette of cilantro and minced jalapeno and plating them with a few slices of melon. There's subtle heat from the jalapeno, in contrast to the slight sweetness of the prawns. Next is a 'Tojo's golden roll,' a sushi roll filled with raw spot prawns, Dungeness crab and salmon, topped with herring roe. There's an explosion of briny freshness in the mouth. It tastes like kissing the sea.

Cohere launches AI health care agents in the U.S.

Canadian artificial intelligence company Cohere Inc. is entering the health care industry through a partnership with U.S.-based Ensemble Health Partners that uses AI agents to help hospitals and other providers manage their revenue. Cohere, founded in 2019, uses large-language models to build chatbots and generative-AI platforms for enterprise customers to automate some tasks. The partnership with Ensemble, launched Tuesday, uses a customized version of the North by Cohere platform that will run on health care providers' internal systems and help with tasks such as hospitals appealing insurance-claim denials and chasing down accounts receivable. The company said pre-launch tests of the tools accelerated denial appeals by 40 per cent and improved denial overturn rates by 15 per cent. Running on internal systems is a key part of how the AI system protects the safety of patients' information and complies with privacy law, said Cohere co-founder Ivan Zhang. 'There's no data leaving their system, because all the agents are in the house,' he said. Because of those privacy concerns, Mr. Zhang said the AI has to be trained on synthetic data, which would be similar to real-world data in likeness and structure but without any protected personal information. The foray into health-care follows Cohere's work in the financial sector, which has to adhere to similar privacy rules. In January, the company announced a partnership with Royal Bank of Canada to co-develop and run a customized platform called North for Banking which, among other things, helps employees answer questions from customers. Mr. Zhang said Cohere is focused on the U.S. market for now, but hopes to have more to announce for Canadian health-care soon. 'So far, we are focused on the U.S. markets. We want to take these learnings and adapt it to different systems in Canada and globally,' he said. Cohere did not disclose any financial terms or which U.S. clients are using the AI platform. The company also received a nod Tuesday from new federal AI minister Evan Solomon. In a speech in Ottawa, Mr. Solomon outlined the government's new approach to AI, saying it would shift from 'warnings and regulation' to celebrating industry 'champions' such as Cohere. Mr. Zhang said he was 'delighted' by the support and said there was a strong case to be made that investments in AI were part of strengthening Canada's economy and security. 'We've been very happy about the government's engagement so far,' he said.

County pushes back on Barrie's boundary expansion proposal

The County of Simcoe is raising concerns about the City of Barrie's proposed boundary expansion, warning it could cost the region millions in tax revenue and development charges, impact infrastructure, and chip away at local economic development. According to a recommendation report presented to the County on Tuesday, staff were directed to work closely with impacted municipalities and consultants to complete a detailed analysis of the potential fallout from Barrie's proposed annexation of land from Springwater and Oro-Medonte. "An adjustment to the boundaries of the Township of Oro-Medonte and the Township of Springwater is also an adjustment to the boundaries of the County of Simcoe," the report noted. "There are countless examples of municipalities growing side by side in Ontario, where annexation is not required to support growth." The County made it clear it's not opposed to a boundary adjustment, as long as the municipalities involved achieve 'mutual benefit.' The County wants a comprehensive impact analysis to be considered before any changes are approved. It also seeks to have an equal role in negotiations with the City of Barrie. According to County staff, the total annual County tax revenue of the proposed annexed lands could be as much as $6.5 million and tens of millions in development charges. The area under consideration includes about 11 kilometres of County and provincial roads and key employment lands that support long-term economic growth. The report notes the goal is to support sustainable growth that is balanced within the County without giving up control to a single city. The County is calling on the province to extend the deadline for a boundary agreement framework from Sept. 30 to Nov. 28 to allow for more thorough analysis and engagement. The report also states the County plans to continue working through the Office of the Provincial Land and Development Facilitator in hopes of reaching a cooperative solution with Barrie, but noted that if those efforts are unsuccessful, staff is prepared to present its findings directly to the province.
