
Record 122°C subsurface temperature found in Sembawang, suggesting geothermal energy potential
Measured at a depth of about 1.76km, the discovery surpassed earlier findings in Admiralty, where a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius was detected at a depth of 1.12km in 2022.
Dr Jonathan Poh, a research fellow at the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (Nanyang Technological University), described the discovery as a 'huge milestone' in Singapore's geothermal exploration efforts.
The data will contribute to geothermal feasibility studies, fuelling the possibility of harnessing geothermal energy as a future energy source. Currently, about 95 per cent of Singapore's energy is generated by burning natural gas, a fossil fuel.
Geothermal energy, derived from heat stored beneath the Earth's surface, is a renewable resource that can be tapped for applications such as cooling and industrial heating, the researchers said.
The study was led by around 15 researchers from NTU and TUMCREATE, in collaboration with Surbana Jurong.
TUMCREATE is a research platform involving the Technical University of Munich, other universities, public agencies and industry partners.
The findings were part of a national study supported by the National Research Foundation and the Energy Market Authority (EMA).
Four researchers from the team sat down with members of the media on Thursday (Jun 3) to share insights from their findings.
IDENTIFYING SITES
When the researchers were exploring geothermal energy in Singapore, their initial plan was to drill several shallow wells at different parts of the country to identify potential sites.
However, they noticed that the northern region tended to be hotter. Based on their analysis, heat flow at the northern part of Singapore is at least twice the global continental average, despite Singapore not being situated in a volcanic region.
To identify suitable drilling sites, the team considered several criteria. First, the locations needed to have good road access and around 1,600 square metres of open space.
The sites also had to be some distance from the hot spring and faults in the Earth's surface.
Given Singapore's limited land availability, the researchers said the sites in Admiralty and Sembawang eventually met all the requirements.
Both sites sit on Simpang granite, a type of rock with a high concentration of naturally occurring heat-generating elements, making it ideal for harnessing geothermal energy.
'If there is a thick crust full of this type of granite, it can possibly contribute up to about 40 per cent of the total heat flow measured at the surface,' said Dr Poh.
Using current data, the researchers found that there is potential for temperatures to reach 230 degrees Celsius 5km deep - well above the minimum of 150 degrees Celsius typically needed for generating electricity.
The researchers are now exploring different heat extraction technologies that could be used in Singapore.
'In Singapore, as we are not sitting on a volcano or near a volcano zone, we need this kind of newly developed systems which allow us to extract heat,' said Mr Anurag Chidire, a research associate at TUMCREATE.
COST SAVINGS, REDUCED EMISSIONS
As Singapore works towards its net-zero emissions target by 2050, geothermal energy is emerging as a compelling option, the researchers said.
To evaluate potential cost savings using both systems, researchers modelled and simulated their application in electricity generation and chilled water production used in Singapore's district cooling system.
In one simulation, electricity generation costs were reduced by at least 38 per cent, while chilled water costs dropped by 39 per cent.
Geothermal energy could also potentially bring cost savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90 per cent, the researchers found.
'Singapore is prudent enough to know that they want to diversify their electricity mix in future. They do not want to go only with 100 per cent imports, or go only with hydrogen, or only solar,' said Mr Chidire, noting that solar power is limited.
'That is the reason why geothermal can play an important role in the diversification of Singapore's electricity, by enhancing the security and aligning with all the environmental cost aspects.'
WHAT'S NEXT
Dr Poh said the new data has motivated the EMA to launch a geophysical survey, which will provide the researchers with a baseline understanding of Singapore's subsurface and identify other areas with geothermal potential.
For now, they are awaiting the outcome of the geophysical study, which is likely to be released at the end of 2026.
The researchers are also trying to engage with other countries to support their geothermal work, he added.
Professor Alessandro Ramognoli, who leads the joint research team, added that current data is already 'quite compelling'.
'From our side, what we are working on is to see whether we can bring together the public sector, together with the private sector, to go for a pilot demonstration plan,' he said, adding that the pilot demonstration will help them study what it entails to actually deploy geothermal energy.

NDR 2025: Singaporeans remain key priority as AI reshapes economy, says PM Wong
SINGAPORE: Amid concerns over the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong assured Singaporeans that they remain the central focus of the country's economic strategy. 'Singaporeans will always be at the centre of everything we do,' he said during his National Day Rally speech on Sunday (Aug 17). Acknowledging that technology will lead to some roles evolving and others disappearing, Mr Wong said new jobs will also emerge. To help Singaporeans seize new job opportunities, he announced a new job-matching initiative to be led by the five Community Development Councils (CDCs), which will help connect jobseekers with vacancies. He noted that while previous waves of technological change improved job quality and pay, many now fear AI may replace entire occupations. 'I understand these concerns, and I assure you: even as we embrace Al and technology, we will not lose sight of our key priority.' Mr Wong stressed that innovation and technology are vital to raising productivity and improving lives in a sustainable way. Singapore has invested in research and development for over two decades, including an early bet on biomedical sciences that proved valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic. 'We are applying the same long-term approach to other frontier technologies,' he said, highlighting quantum computing as an example. Beyond cutting-edge research, Mr Wong said it is important for new technologies to be adopted across the wider economy. Recalling the nationwide computerisation drive in the 1980s, he said students were exposed to computers in schools and community centres, while workers received training. 'With each new wave of technology, we adapted. We upgraded. We lifted our whole country up,' he said. ERA OF AI The world is now entering an era shaped by artificial intelligence – what Mr Wong called the 'defining technology of our time'. He noted that AI is progressing rapidly and will transform how people live, work and interact. AI is already being deployed across industries. The civil service uses it to transcribe and summarise calls. Tuas Port is highly automated, and Changi Airport is exploring automation for baggage handling and airside operations. American multinational corporation GE Vernova has a high-tech facility in Singapore that uses AI to detect anomalies in turbine components so that repair works can be carried out. Local firms such as Q&M Dental are also using AI to help dentists analyse X-rays. 'There are many, many more possibilities,' said Mr Wong. 'We will equip and empower every enterprise, especially our SMEs to harness Al effectively, and sharpen their competitive edge.' SUPPORT FOR WORKERS Singapore will not rush to adopt technology without ensuring support for workers, Mr Wong said. The government will work closely with unions and workers to redesign jobs and empower employees. 'Ultimately, our economic strategy is about jobs, jobs and jobs – that's our number one priority,' he said. To that end, a new job-matching initiative will be launched at the town level by the five CDCs. With their local networks of merchants, SMEs and community partners, they are well-placed to match jobseekers with vacancies – especially those who prefer to work closer to home. The mayors will share more details on the scheme soon, he added. A SkillsFuture Level Up programme for those 40 and older was also introduced last year, Mr Wong said. Under the programme, eligible mid-career workers receive S$4,000 (US$3,100) in SkillsFuture credits and training allowances of up to S$3,000 a month for those who take time off from work to study full-time. As announced in his Budget 2025 speech, part of the training allowance can be claimed for part-time courses. Course offerings will also be expanded to include programmes by private providers and industry leaders, in addition to institutes of higher learning. Singapore must continue building a dynamic economy that creates good jobs and better lives for all Singaporeans, said Mr Wong. 'We may not be able to match other countries in size or scale. But we will stay ahead in ideas, in innovation, and in our collective will to move forward – together as one united people.'

NDR 2025: New Islamic college to be located next to SUSS in Rochor, feature shared facilities
SINGAPORE: The upcoming Singapore College of Islamic Studies (SCIS) will be located next to the new Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) campus in Rochor, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced on Sunday (Aug 17). Students at the college will be able to take SUSS courses as part of their studies, and both institutions will also share facilities, he said in his Malay National Day Rally speech at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College headquarters in Ang Mo Kio. 'This way, students from both institutions can better interact with one another, enriching their campus lives,' he added. Mr Wong said the SCIS 'will have its own campus' at the former site and vicinity of Rochor Centre, next to the site of the SUSS campus slated to be ready by mid-2030s. 'SCIS and SUSS will be housed in their own buildings, which will reflect their own unique identity and purpose,' said Mr Wong. He did not say when the new campus is slated to be completed. ABOUT THE COLLEGE Mr Wong said in his rally speech last year that the SCIS will offer a full-time undergraduate degree programme allowing students to major in either Islamic Studies or Social Sciences. In November last year, Mufti Nazirudin Mohd Nasir said the new Islamic college will take in its first cohort of 60 students in 2028. The school will operate at an interim campus at 51 Bencoolen Street until the Rochor campus is completed, said the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) in a separate factsheet on Sunday. Apart from SUSS, SCIS will work with other global institutions to develop and deliver a four-year full-time undergraduate degree programme, including Egypt's Dar al-Ifta, the University of Jordan and Al-Qarawiyyin University in Morocco. On top of the two majors available for the undergraduate degree programme, SCIS will also offer a postgraduate certificate in Islam in Contemporary Societies for returning graduates of overseas Islamic universities who want to become Islamic religious teachers, Muis said in the factsheet. It will also set up a research programme on the Study of Muslim Communities of Success that caters to local religious leaders, asatizah and scholars with an interest in studying Muslim communities. MALAY HERITAGE CENTRE Mr Wong on Sunday also revealed that the Malay Heritage Centre, which had been temporarily closed since Oct 2022, will reopen next year. The centre had been closed for restoration and redevelopment works. The centre, in a joint statement with the National Heritage Board, said it is currently in the final stages of works and will reopen its doors on Apr 25, 2026. Mr Wong said the revamped centre will feature 'galleries and programmes to showcase the richness and vibrancy of our Singaporean Malay culture'. The centre is located within the grounds of Istana Kampong Gelam, which was originally built in the 1800s. Its last major redevelopment took place in 2011. When it is reopened, the centre's permanent galleries will showcase a 'refreshed narrative' with updated content and new artefacts, incorporating new research findings, stories and objects from the community, the factsheet read. 'The refresh will also enhance the representation of Malay ethnic sub-groups through various ways such as material culture and writing systems, encouraging visitors to see Malay heritage as a rich multifaceted tapestry,' said the centre and NHB in the factsheet.
