Superstar recluse Sade's totally different life and career after ditching fame
The soul singer quickly became a global icon after the release of her first album in 1984 and would go on to be one of the biggest music stars of the 1980s and 1990s
From the fame of "Smooth Operator" to a tranquil life in Somerset, soul legend Sade Adu has swapped her 1980s global stardom for a peaceful existence in the West Country.
Born Helen Folasade Adu in Nigeria and later known simply as Sade Adu, she relocated to Colchester at just four to live with her grandparents. Her formative years were spent growing up in Essex.
However, her life took a dramatic turn when she and her band skyrocketed to fame following the release of their debut smooth soul single, "Your Love is King," which climbed to number six on the charts in 1984. Their first album, Diamond Life, received even more praise, selling a staggering 10 million records and remaining a classic four decades after its release.
Sade also won over critics, bagging four Grammy's for her hits, including being named Best New Artist in 1986 following the release of their second album. Around this period, the singer dabbled in acting, making her debut in Absolute Beginners, a film set in 1950s London.
Over the next two decades, Sade achieved international fame, with singles like "Smooth Operator", "The Sweetest Taboo" and "No Ordinary Love" echoing from radios worldwide. These tracks continue to be popular today, having been streamed over a billion times on Spotify alone, reports the Daily Record.
The elusive star, known for her infrequent album releases and long absences from the public eye, has seemingly embraced a life of tranquillity, snapping up a farm in the West Country where she resided during the pandemic with her partner Ian Watts and her mother, affectionately known as "Granny Annie".
In a 2020 interview with British Vogue, the singer said: "Like everyone, we're on a ship of unknown destination but that's life ... no mutiny yet."
She added: "There's always so much to do: there are songs I so want to write, and I've rediscovered the joy cooking brings."
Despite her retreat to the countryside, Sade continues to create music, with her latest single "Young Lion" dropping in 2024, following "Flower of the Universe" from the Disney movie A Wrinkle in Time featuring Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey.
Sade's contribution to music was officially recognised when she was awarded an OBE in 2002 as part of the Queen's New Years Honours List, and she later received a CBE in 2017 for her services to music.

East Lothian bingo caller's heartwarming tribute to brother ahead of BGT final
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info East Lothian holiday park bingo caller Vinnie McKee is just one performance away from potentially clinching the title of this year's Britain's Got Talent champion. The 29 year old Glaswegian from Ruchazie is counting on Scotland's support as he prepares to take the stage in tonight's eagerly anticipated live final. Vinnie, who has been deeply affected by the loss of his brother Frankie last year to a suspected irregular heartbeat, believes his brother will be with him in spirit during his performance. The entertainer, who works at Dunbar's Thurston Manor Holiday Park, impressed with his rendition of The Proclaimers' classic 'I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)' at his audition and earned Simon Cowell's golden buzzer in the process. Vinnie said: "When I step on stage tonight my brother will be there with me and I will 100 per cent be singing for him." He recounted feeling his late brother's presence during the live semi-final, saying: "I felt Frankie beside me when I sang in the live semi-final. I spoke to him before I went on saying he better be on stage waiting for me as I could not walk out there myself and he was.", reports the Daily Record. Vinnie opened up about the profound impact his brother's passing had on his family, describing the past year as the most challenging period of their lives, but noted that BGT has brought them a glimmer of hope. He expressed how participating in BGT has been a beacon of light amidst the darkness, stating: "Losing him has been devastating for my whole family. Last year was the worst time of our lives but BGT has given us all something to be excited about. It's been a bit of light at the end of a very long tunnel." Reflecting on his journey to the final, Vinnie revealed the personal significance behind his audition song choice: "When I sang 500 Miles in my audition it was an ode to my brother and everything that has happened to our family." He confessed that while he didn't verbalise the tribute at the time, he believes the emotion resonated in his voice as he performed: "I didn't say that out loud at the time but I think everyone could feel and hear the emotion in my voice as I sang the words. "My mum, dad, sister, aunt and uncle will all be in the audience tonight and Frankie will be with me on stage cheering me on. I want to make him, my family and Scotland proud." Vinnie, who is gearing up to wow at this year's Pride of Scotland Awards, is set for a final showdown alongside LED dance squad The Blackouts, the youthful guitar wizard Olly Pearson, ping pong dance ensemble Ping Pong Pang and humourist Joseph Charm. Joining them in the quest for glory are vocalists Maya Giotea and Stacey Leadbeatter, the impassioned Hear Our Voice choir, nimble nine year old gymnast Binita Chetry, and drag artist songstress Jasmine Rice in the gripping race to clinch the talent show's top honour. While judges Alesha Dixon, Bruno Tonioli, Amanda Holden, and Simon Cowell will put forth their critiques, the ultimate decision rests in the hands of the public; Vinnie is counting on passionate support from Scotland to claim victory. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sentstraight to your messages. Should he triumph, the soul-stirring crooner would become the second Scot to seize victory on the renowned ITV programme, echoing the success of Jai McDowell, who earned accolades as champion back in 2011. With his semi-final rendition of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" leaving audiences captivated, Vinnie expressed: "I am so proud to be flying the flag for Scotland and it would be amazing if the nation got behind me tonight and voted." He added with heartfelt pride, "I feel like I have already won as reaching a final is a huge achievement for a wee boy from the East End of Glasgow." He revealed the shock of performing for millions compared to families at the holiday park: "This is the biggest thing I have ever done and I have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure it is really happening. I'm used to singing in front of a room full of families in a caravan park and now I'm singing live in front of millions." Don't miss the Britain's Got Talent live final airing tonight on ITV1 and ITVX at 7pm.

Hailey Bieber had a career-making May. But what is going on with Justin?
Hailey Bieber has had a career-making month after securing a billion-dollar deal to sell her beauty empire and landing a Vogue cover. But the model and entrepreneur's recent milestones have only renewed the public's obsessive interest in Justin Bieber, her husband of seven years and father of their infant, whose erratic behavior and sometimes jaw-dropping online activity have long fueled rumors about his declining health and marriage. 'What's going on right now with Justin Bieber is not a full-blown crisis, but the early warning system lights are definitely flashing,' said Evan Nierman, founder and CEO of a global PR firm that handles reputation management. 'The contrast between them now is glaring and jarring, and that's why there is so much public discussion about him.' The Biebers have long dodged and denied allegations of marital and personal turmoil, fueled in part by Justin's decision to step away from music in 2019 to work on 'deep-rooted issues,' his struggles with drug use and concerning live streams from the now gaunt-looking Canadian pop star. His troubling behavior is even the subject of a new TMZ documentary on Hulu. 'Whatever he's going through, I pray for him and hope he's OK,' former collaborator Poo Bear, who co-wrote some of his biggest hits, told the Hollywood Reporter last month. Justin's team has long denied issues with the Grammy-winner or his marriage, and insight into him is primarily released to the press through anonymous sources. Still, his public behavior, including his posts about Hailey to his 294 million Instagram followers, has fans and PR insiders voicing concern. Teams for both Biebers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Wednesday, following the news that E.l.f. Beauty acquired Rhode in a deal worth up to $1 billion, Justin posted a two-photo carousel on Instagram to congratulate Hailey and her skin-care company: a photo of his wife leaning over a table and a screenshot of the capture of her Instagram post. The carousel was among a photo dump Justin posted that day, which included a shot of him sitting shirtless next to a bong and another of him groping a smiling Hailey. 'In my professional opinion, I do think this was poorly executed,' said Nabeela Aysen, a New York-based crisis communication expert, referring to Justin's congratulatory post. 'As someone who works in crisis communications, I would've loved for his team to review that post before he hit publish.' Still, the tribute was hailed by some as a moment of growth for Justin, who raised eyebrows last week when he initially celebrated his wife's Vogue cover by admitting on Instagram that he once told Hailey that she would 'never be on the cover of Vogue.' 'The real question here is: where is his team? Are they afraid to push back? Or are they advising him, and he's just not listening? Hopefully, Hailey and his reps had a conversation with him behind the scenes, and we won't be seeing more posts like this anytime soon,' Aysen added. The Grammy-winner's Wednesday post, however, did nothing to quench the incessant rumor mill that has long plagued his marriage, especially after reports emerged that Hailey celebrated Rhode's acquisition without Justin. The Biebers tied the knot in a 2018 civil ceremony, held a 2019 star-studded South Carolina wedding, and renewed their vows last year. At the time, Justin's career was soaring with four albums, numerous awards and consistently sold-out shows. In contrast, Hailey was a model most recognizable as a Baldwin. Dr. Chloe Carmichael, a New York clinical psychologist, explained that the power dynamic could have established early roles for the couple as Justin moved away from music and Hailey kick-started her career in beauty. 'Since Justin was a child, that was his identity: to be a wildly successful musician,' Carmichael said. 'I would almost be surprised if there were not a certain amount of growing pains as their life changed.' And the Biebers have been open about those growing pains. In a 2021 interview with GQ, Justin admitted that the 'first year of marriage was really tough…because there was a lot, going back to the trauma stuff.' 'There was just lack of trust,' Justin said. 'There was all these things that you don't want to admit to the person that you're with, because it's scary. You don't want to scare them off by saying, 'I'm scared.'' A few months later, Hailey admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that she was taking marriage 'one day at a time' and 'learning a lot.' Still, the couple continued to deny rumors of a struggling home life, especially after Justin announced in a lengthy 2019 Instagram post that he was stepping away from music to focus on his mental health and marriage. 'I have been looking, seeking, trial and error as most of us do, I am now very focused on repairing some of the deep rooted issues that I have as most of us have, so that I don't fall apart, so that I can sustain my marriage and be the father I want to be,' Justin said in his post. Justin released his last album, 'Justice,' in March 2021, and that tour was cut short after he suffered temporary facial paralysis. In December 2022, Justin sold his music catalog, which consisted of over 290 titles, in a deal to U.K.-based Hipgnosis Songs Capital, a venture between finance giant Blackstone and Hipgnosis Song Management. 'For Justin, I think that was the motivation: He had ill health and was at a time in his life where he was married and very in love and contemplating family. Making the deal gave him the freedom to focus on that and not have to be on the treadmill he'd been on for almost 15 years,' Merck Mercuriadis, the founder of one of the companies that bought Justin's catalog, told The Hollywood Reporter in April. Aysen said that despite Justin's alleged struggles, his relationship with Hailey 'is a lot more layered than what the public sees.' 'Hailey seems to be in a really strong place professionally. She's building her brand, becoming more visible, and stepping into her own,' she added. 'Meanwhile, Justin feels a little lost in this chapter, like he's still figuring out who he is and where he fits, both personally and creatively.' In January, Justin set the internet ablaze when he unfollowed Hailey on Instagram and then refollowed her that morning. 'Someone went on my account and unfollowed my wife,' he wrote on his Instagram story. Two months later, Hailey unfollowed Justin for two days. According to Page Six, Hailey claimed it was merely a 'glitch' in a TikTok comment. Around the same time, a shirtless Justin went on Instagram Live to begin rapping while his eyelids appeared droopy. Fans were again analyzing Justin's moves in April after a video emerged showing him dancing with what appeared to be a blunt in his hand at Coachella, according to People And earlier this month, Justin shocked fans by joining SZA in a California performance, where he was seen closing his eyes and repeatedly kissing the singer's hand. At one point, after Justin stopped singing into his mic and leaned forward, SZA cupped his chin in a move that spurred an online debate about whether the move was an emotional interaction between the two artists or a signal of a bigger issue. Later in the performance, SZA also had to point Justin to his mark on stage. Nierman explained that the public's ongoing fascination with the Biebers partly stems from the drip of information about their personal life that only comes from social media posts and press exposure. 'The truth is, that's only a small window of what we know about him and his day-to-day life,' he explained. The Biebers, who announced last August the birth of their son, Jack Blues, have made it clear recently that their relationship is strong. In the Vogue article, Justin said the 'smartest thing I've ever done was marry Hailey,' while the model said she follows her husband's advice on navigating fame. 'He's been doing this literally since he was a child, and he has had to face the most scrutiny of any person that I know,' she said. 'He was, like, 'Baby, trust me, I've been here before many, many times. You're not going to win. There is no winning.'' Haily also revealed how the persistent divorce rumors took a toll on her after she gave birth, and discussed her shock at the public's unrelenting obsession with the couple. 'Well, I thought seven years in it would've already, and it hasn't. You would think after having a child, people would maybe move on, chill out a little bit, but no,' she said.

'Best horror film' fans have ever seen now streaming on Netflix
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Boasting an impressive 98 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Babadook is a 2014 indie psychological horror film that has garnered a cult following since its debut. The film, based on Jennifer Kent's 2005 short film Monster, was both penned and directed by Kent, marking her first foray into feature-length directing. The cast includes young Noah Wiseman as Samuel Vanek and Essie Davis delivering a compelling performance as Amelia Vanek, with Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney, Barbara West, and Ben Winspear rounding out the top-notch ensemble. Currently available on Netflix, The Babadook tells the chilling tale of a widowed single mum, Essie, who, along with her son Sam, grapples with a sinister humanoid monster in their home that simply won't leave. Kent reportedly began crafting the screenplay in 2009, aiming to delve into themes of grief, parenting, and the terror of insanity. Funding for the film was sourced from Australian government grants and partially through crowdfunding. The shoot took place in Adelaide, where the crew made sure to protect six year old Wiseman from the film's eerie undertones, reports the Daily Record. (Image: PA) The eponymous monster and special effects were reportedly realised using stop-motion animation and practical effects. The film smashed the global box office, pocketing an impressive $10 million against a modest $2 million budget. Despite its worldwide success, The Babadook received a lukewarm response in Australia, managing a mere $258,000. It initially charmed audiences at its Sundance Film Festival debut in January 2014. Film buffs were utterly taken by "The Babadook," with one critic hailing it as: "One of the strongest, most effective horror films of recent years - with awards-quality lead work from Essie Davis, and a brilliantly designed new monster who could well become the break-out spook archetype of the decade." While accolades poured in with another critic branding it "one of the smartest and most effective horror films in years", yet another praised: "This psychological thriller from gifted first-time filmmaker Jennifer Kent will have you climbing the walls simply by plumbing the violence of the mind. Brace yourself." (Image: FREE FILM STILL / FREE TO USE) Praise wasn't in short supply, with one saying: "Let a law be passed, requiring all horror films to be made by female directors." Another added: "Manages to deliver real, seat-grabbing jolts while also touching on more serious themes of loss, grief and other demons that can not be so easily vanquished." Cinema-goers echoed critics' sentiments, with one praising: "Excellent, suspenseful movie with incredible acting, especially from the child actor. This movie, at 10 years old already, will be a classic. The Rotten Tomato score is SPOT ON with 98%!". One viewer was thoroughly impressed, writing: "This is definitely one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. Not only was it terrifying, but it really made me care about the characters. I highly recommend it for horror fans!". Another enthusiast couldn't contain their enthusiasm, writing in all caps: "ONE OF THE MOST PERFECT MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN! This film was no joke! Although no jump scares, this movie has proven that you don't need cheep jump scares and gore to make a proper horror film. The performances of the two characters and the atmosphere of everything is what made this movie truly terrifying in it's own ways. One other thing to mention is the emotional story that grabs you from start to finish. The Babadook is a unique work of cinema unlike anything you've ever seen! What a masterpiece!". Meanwhile, another viewer admitted a change of heart: "I made fun of this movie when I first watched it. Until it was late at night and I was trying to fall I ate my words."
