Former Senate Deputy President Claims Trial To Bribery Involving Luxury Vehicle
Former Dewan Negara deputy president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today to a charge of accepting a luxury car as a bribe in 2015. He entered the plea after the charge was read out to him before Judge Elesabet Paya Wan.
MELAKA, June 26 (Bernama) -- Former Dewan Negara deputy president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today to a charge of accepting a luxury car as a bribe in 2015.
He entered the plea after the charge was read out to him before Judge Elesabet Paya Wan.
According to the charge sheet, Mohamad Ali is accused of corruptly accepting a Range Rover Sport from a company director as an inducement to award subcontract works for a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana.
The alleged offence took place at the company's office in Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka Tengah, in June 2015.
The charge, under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which carries up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib urged the court to maintain the same bail conditions set by the Shah Alam Sessions Court on June 18 - namely RM60,000 bail with one surety, surrender of the accused's passport, and a prohibition on contacting prosecution witnesses.
He also applied for the case previously filed in Shah Alam to be transferred to Ayer Keroh so that both matters could be heard together.
Defence counsel Md Yunos Shariff raised no objection, and the court fixed August 14 for mention.
On June 18, Mohamad Ali had claimed trial in the Shah Alam Sessions Court to 20 charges of accepting RM235,000 in cash and three luxury cars in relation to the same reclamation project.

GENERAL IPOH, June 26 (Bernama) -- Datin Dr Siti Zalikhah Md Nor, mother of Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, was posthumously honoured with the Saidina Abu Bakar As-Siddiq award in conjunction with the Perak Maal Hijrah celebrations tonight. The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, presented the award to Fadhlina. Siti Zalikhah died at 9.30 am on June 16, 2024, at Serdang Hospital. She was 75. Born in Perak, Siti Zalikhah had seven children, including Fadhlina, from her marriage to the former Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) president, the late Prof Datuk Dr Siddiq Fadzil. She served as a member of the Syariah Review Panel under the National Fatwa Council and was also appointed to the Haj Advisory Committee by Tabung Haji. Siti Zalikhah was a syariah lawyer with extensive experience in Islamic family law. She was a prolific writer, presenter, and translator of the works of prominent Islamic scholars on issues concerning women and their roles from an Islamic perspective. Religious personality Sharifah Khasif Fadzillah Syed Badiuzzaman was named the 1447H Maal Hijrah Personality. Both award recipients received RM15,000 cash, an umrah package worth RM9,000, a plaque, and a certificate. Meanwhile, the Siti Khadijah award (Woman Personality) went to Robiah Kulop Hamzah, 74; the Saidina Ali (Youth Personality) award was presented to Muhammad Firdaus Mohamad Suki; 27; and Norzita Hamid, 44, received the Asnaf Icon award.

GOF seizes RM595,000 worth of pork carcasses and lorry in Kelantan
RANTAU PANJANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 8,910kg of pork carcasses and a lorry, both valued at about RM595,000, in an operation here on June 19. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said a lorry driver and his assistant were also arrested for possessing the carcasses, which were believed to have been smuggled from Thailand. He said the GOF team from the Ninth Battalion stopped the suspected lorry as it passed through Kampung Bukit Tandak at about 4pm. "Upon inspecting the lorry, GOF personnel found 8,910kg of pork carcasses in the rear of the vehicle. "The driver failed to produce valid documentation for the goods, which are believed to have been smuggled in from Thailand," he said today. Ros Azhan said the 37-year-old driver and his 43-year-old assistant were believed to be delivering the meat to the local market. "The total seizure, including the lorry, is estimated to be worth about RM595,000 and has been handed over to the Kelantan Veterinary Department for further action," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953. Separately, he said a 24-year-old man was arrested for selling ketum leaves and ketum juice at a house in Jalan Kedai Lama here today. "In the 10.30am raid, GOF personnel found 9kg of ketum leaves, 12 packets of ketum juice, and RM2,500 in cash believed to be proceeds from the illegal activity," he said. He added that the total seizure was estimated at RM3,220 and the case has been handed over to the Pasir Mas Narcotics Crime Investigation Division for further action. "The suspect also tested positive for Benzodiazepines. The case is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952 and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he added.

Ex-Sabah Water Director claims RM17 million not his
KOTA KINABALU (June 26): A Sessions Court here today heard that large amount of cash allegedly found by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in a former Sabah Water Department director's office pantry belonged to someone else. The first defence witness, Ag Mohd Tahir Mohd Talib, 63, told judge Abu Bakar Manat that most of the cash found in the pantry did not belong to him — only the amount inside a knapsack was his. Under cross-examination by deputy public prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat, Ag Mohd Tahir disagreed with the suggestion that he was the only person who had a key to the pantry. Mahadi: At the pantry and inside the knapsack, there was nothing belonging to anyone else. Agree? Ag Mohd Tahir: Only inside the knapsack was mine. Mahadi: In the pantry, there were items belonging to someone else? Ag Mohd Tahir: Yes. Mahadi: Can you tell the court what items belonged to someone else? Ag Mohd Tahir: A large amount of cash. He also agreed that no items in the knapsack belonged to someone else. Earlier, under examination-in-chief, Ag Mohd Tahir testified that the bulk of the RM20 million allegedly found in the pantry was already there when he entered the office. He claimed that from time to time he would keep his money there, especially when his brother came to request political donations. He maintained that only RM3 million of the RM20 million belonged to him. Ag Mohd Tahir is on trial alongside his wife Fauziah Hj Piut, 58, and former department deputy director Lim Lam Beng @ Lim Chee Hong, 69. He faces 11 charges, while Fauziah faces 19 charges under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUA). The couple also faces two joint charges under the same section, while Ag Mohd Tahir has an additional charge under Section 4(1)(a). The alleged offences were committed between October 4 and November 4, 2016, at various locations including Ag Mohd Tahir's office, a house in Sembulan, bank branches, a condominium in Sulaman, and a tower in Kuala Lumpur. Lim is alleged to have committed related offences between October 13 and November 8, 2016, at the MACC office in Jalan UMS and at a residence in Kota Kinabalu. Ag Mohd Tahir also testified that he was unaware his wife had 19 bank accounts totalling RM2.2 million. He disagreed with claims that MACC had seized 900 pieces of jewellery, initially valued at RM1.7 million in 2016, and later appraised at RM4.1 million in 2023. The prosecution is led by deputy public prosecutors Mahadi Abdul Jumaat, Haresh Prakash Somiah and Zander Lim. Ag Mohd Tahir and Fauziah are represented by Datuk Hj Ansari Abdullah and Erveana Ansari. Lim is defended by Datuk Tan Hock Chuan, Baldev Singh and Kelvin Wong. The trial resumes on July 23.
