Jalandhar: A day after former Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh announced his decision to quit the race for the
presidency and endorsed the candidature of
, the dissident Akali camp and the five-member committee, in a joint meeting at Chandigarh on Saturday, decided to propose his name for unanimous election.

However, the decision was not taken without hiccups.
If everything goes well at the Aug 11 election meeting, Giani Harpreet Singh will be the first SAD president from a scheduled caste background. Earlier, he was the acting Jathedar of Akal Takht.
Sources privy to the deliberations in the meeting revealed that it was also decided to have a Panthic Talmel Committee, which would be headed by Satwant Kaur. Its main task would be to bring Panthic forces onto a common platform.
As Giani Harpreet Singh's announcement on Friday morning through his social media accounts jolted the entire dissident Akali camp, its senior leaders worked to persuade him to accept the post. Satwant Kaur, a member of the five-member committee, is the daughter of the then All India Sikh Students Federation President Amrik Singh, who was a close associate of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and was killed in Operation Blue Star.
Akal Takht formed a seven-member committee in its December 2 pronouncement, but two of its members - Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Harjinder Singh Dhami and former President Kirpal Singh Badungar - stayed away from its function on one pretext or another.
It is learnt that the first leaders of the erstwhile SAD Sudhar Lehar held a meeting with Giani Harpreet Singh in Chandigarh and persuaded him to accept the post.

Then a meeting at a separate place was held in which Sudhar Lehar leaders and the five-member committee, barring Satwant Kaur, participated. In this meeting, committee members Manpreet Singh Aiyali, Iqbal Singh Jhoondan, and Santa Singh Umaidpuri strongly argued for having Satwant Kaur as the new president.
From the committee, Gurpartap Singh Wadala supported the former Jathedar.
Sources said that those who supported Satwant argued that with her at the helm, they could easily take along MP Amritpal Singh's camp, and he was still popular. However, after a discussion involving arguments and counter-arguments, the majority of the leaders put their weight behind Giani Harpreet Singh, and it was decided to propose his name for unanimous election.
It is learnt that a phone call to Giani Harpreet Singh by a leader on Thursday night, conveying a formula that appeared to undermine him, rattled him, and he decided to quit the race.

Harchand Singh Longowal death anniv to bring out difference between real & fake Akali Dal: Chandumajra

Chandigarh: Senior Akali leader and former Member of Parliament Prem Singh Chandumajra on Tuesday said the death anniversary of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal on Wednesday would mark the beginning of a new campaign by the "real" Akali Dal, aimed at safeguarding Punjab and Punjabi identity. In a written statement on Tuesday, Chandumajra, who is a part of the parallel faction of the Akali Dal headed by Giani Harpreet Singh, said: "Under the guidance of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the genuine Akali Dal will launch this initiative to counter challenges facing the panth." He said the occasion would also bring out a clear distinction between the "real and the fake Akali Dal" before the people of Punjab. Emphasising that "unity and community harmony are essential to defeat forces working against Punjab", the senior leader urged "all the Akalis and those committed to the welfare of Punjab and the panth to come together". Expressing concern over the economic situation, Chandumajra said Punjab was "being pushed into a state of financial bankruptcy". "The state is already burdened with a debt of Rs 4 lakh crore, which is growing every single day. To rescue Punjab from this grim phase, all Punjabis must rise collectively," he added. Chandumajra pointed to multiple crises faced by the state – loss of Punjab's control over its dams, the deployment of the BBMB and the CISF, the Centre withholding hundreds of crores of rupees in rural development funds, and the scrapping of the 60:40 employment ratio for Chandigarh employees. "On all these issues, the state leadership has maintained complete silence," he stated. Chandumajra urged Punjabis to unite under the leadership of Giani Harpreet Singh, whom he described as the "true heir of Punjab". Alliance or alienation? BJP dichotomy in Akali politics

Jalandhar: As the turf war escalates between the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal and the newly formed SAD headed by Giani Harpreet Singh, there is a growing tendency within the former camp to invoke negative references to the 'Centre', 'central forces', and 'agencies' — implicitly pointing to the BJP's alleged involvement. At the same time, a dichotomy is emerging: while leaders and cadres on both sides appear open to the possibility of a future alliance with the BJP, the broader Sikh community remains wary of the saffron party. Sukhbir's camp is increasing its attacks along these lines, fully aware of the heightened apprehensions among Sikh masses about the saffron party, and is trying to use that sentiment to discredit the rival camp. Against the backdrop of these prevailing apprehensions, it emerged in the 2024 parliament election that Sikh voters even tilted towards Congress to block the BJP. During the campaign for the 2024 general elections, Sukhbir attacked the BJP, accusing the saffron party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of taking control of important gurdwara bodies outside Punjab. When the SAD suffered a split after the election, his camp blamed the BJP directly, as well as through mentions of 'central forces' or 'agencies', accusing them of plotting to dislodge him. When Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma-led Damdami Taksal sought to put itself at the centre of opposition to the controversial removal of two Takht Jathedars in March, Sukhbir's camp accused him of collusion with the BJP and branded him a "tool of the central govt and agencies". As Giani Harpreet Singh's camp faces the heat of attacks on these lines, they may also adopt a bitter tone about the BJP, and the shrillness may increase in their statements as well. Enquiries among leaders and cadres of both camps reflect that they see the possibility of the saffron party forging an alliance with one side. However, people in either camp admit that a considerable section among Sikhs is more apprehensive about the BJP than the Congress. "The leaders and a section of the cadres are attached to the power structure and they give positive feedback when asked about the prospects of an alliance. Sometimes local-level leaders even push for it. However, the choices of the common Sikh voters are shaped by the larger concerns of the community," said a senior Akali leader. In such a situation, the competing negative mentions of the BJP or the 'central forces', 'agencies' can add more bitterness for the BJP in the larger community, narrowing the room for an alliance with the BJP or its dividends. Another considerable factor is the negativity among Sikh farmers, who form the largest support base of the Akali Dal, towards the BJP amid the farm movement. Only AAP's Land Pooling Policy, since withdrawn, led to similar negativity among the farmers. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 26 yrs on, jathedar urges govt to reveal truth behind Chattisinghpura massacre

Amritsar: Highlighting the plight of the families of 35 innocent Sikhs who were brutally killed in Chattisinghpura village of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir on March 20, 2000, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, the officiating jathedar of the Akal Takht, on Tuesday called on the Jammu and Kashmir govt to "disclose the truth" behind the incident. The jathedar, in a statement, mentioned that the tragic incident had not only shook the Sikhs of Kashmir but the entire community worldwide. "The families of those martyred Sikhs are still waiting for justice, as the truth behind the massacre has not been brought to light till today," he said, adding that it was the responsibility of the govt to reveal the reality. Giani Gargajj also visited the memorial of the 35 innocent Sikhs and participated in the Gurmat Samagam organised by the local Sikh community. He also witnessed the wall that still bears the bullet marks from that massacre. "It is painful that, even after so many years, the perpetrators of this massacre have neither been exposed nor punished," said the jathedar. The bullet marks still stand as testimony to how the Sikh community, despite being a minority, has repeatedly been made a target, he added. He also met the family members of the martyrs and expressed his solidarity with them. MSID:: 123386012 413 | Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
