Soccer-Courtois out of Belgian squad for World Cup qualifiers
(Reuters) -Belgium goalkeeper ThibautCourtois has withdrawn from the squad for their opening two World Cup qualifiers this month because of a back injury.
The player's club Real Madrid said on Sunday that he had been diagnosed with sacroiliitis -- inflammation of one or both sacroiliac joints in the area where the lower back and pelvis meet.
"The medical staff of Real Madrid and the Royal Belgian Football Association have discussed Thibaut Courtois' back problems intensively in the past period,' the Belgian association added in a statement.
"Both medical staffs have come to the conclusion that the goalkeeper is not fit for the upcoming internationals.'
The injury may also jeopardise Courtois' chances of playing at the Club World Cup in the United States, where Real Madrid open their campaign in Miami on June 18 against Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia.
Uncapped Nordin Jackers from Club Brugge will replace Courtois in the Belgian squad for the matches against North Macedonia in Skopje on Friday and at home to Wales next Monday.
Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels is expected to take Courtois' placein goal for the two Group J fixtures.

He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired.

Neuer capable of making Germany comeback for 2026 World Cup
BERLIN: Former Germany midfielder Thomas Muller has joined those saying that former teammate Manuel Neuer is capable of making a comeback for the 2026 World Cup, if needed, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. "If Manuel is fit at that point and playing in goal for Bayern Munich, then I have every confidence in him as Germany's number one at the 2026 World Cup," he told Wednesday's edition of the Sport Bild weekly. Muller just moved to Vancouver Whitecaps from Bayern, where he played for years alongside Neuer. They were also teammates at the Germany national team, winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Neuer, 39, retired from the national team after Euro 2024 last summer. However, his successor Marc-Andre ter Stegen is sidelined for months following back surgery. Ter Stegen's situation at Barcelona is also not looking good, as he is likely to be only the third goalkeeper there this season. A possible transfer is unlikely until January due to the injury.
