Ash from Whakaari disrupts flights as volcanic unrest continues
Flights at
Tauranga Airport
are being cancelled after
volcanic activity
from
Whakaari Island
, aka White Island, caused disruptions over the weekend. 'Ash cloud from White Island is covering our airspace,' a Tauranga Airport spokesperson said.

Air New Zealand
canceled four flights due to a steam and gas plume from the
volcano
reaching the
Bay of Plenty
airspace on Sunday evening (May 11).
Two additional flights were canceled on Monday morning(May 12) as a result of aircraft being out of position from the previous night's disruptions.
Dr. Adrian Pittari of Senior Lecturer at
Earth
Sciences, University of Waikato said, 'Ash in volcanic plumes is considered a hazard to aeroplanes flying in affected airspace because it is sucked into their engines potentially clogging fuel lines, sticking onto engine surfaces and eroding parts.'
A Wellington Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre advisory was issued for Whakaari/White Island showing data from satellite imagery. The advisory states there is an ongoing low-level
eruption
, but ash was observed 'further west than modelled'.
Live Events
The volcanic activity led to the issuance of an ash advisory when light easterly winds carried the plume westward, affecting airspace above Tauranga. GNS Science noted that the plume's impact was due to weather conditions, with no ashfall expected on the coast.
White Island continues to remain at Volcanic Alert Level 3, indicating a minor eruption. The Aviation Colour Code is at Orange, signaling that a volcanic eruption is underway with no or minor ash emission.
Air New Zealand advises passengers to monitor the airline's app and website for the latest updates on flight schedules. The airline does not anticipate further disruptions at this time and recommends consulting GeoNet's website and the Wellington Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre.
Whakaari/White Island is located offshore in the Bay of Plenty and is New Zealand's most active cone volcano.
In December 2019, a sudden eruption occurred while tour groups were visiting the island, resulting in 22 fatalities and numerous injuries. The fifth anniversary of the incident was marked in a ceremony at Whakatāne in December 2024.

How 'frolleagues' and streaming platforms are redefining travel in 2025
The travel landscape in India has changed drastically over the years. New terms and trends have emerged and redefined the idea of travelling altogether. It is not just about a routine holiday that happens once or twice a year. It is not just about the beach or mountains. Indian travellers, in 2025, are all about travelling more, spending more (on travel), going for mini and major vacations, from the when, where and how of travel, what's becoming increasingly important is the 'who'. Who are you travelling with? And the emerging trend is a travel tribe called the 'frolleagues'- colleagues who double as friends and also travel buddies. In a survey released by the Thomas Cook India Holiday Report 2025, about 28 per cent of people preferred 'frolleagues' as their travel would have thought that your coffee-break buddy would become your trekking partner too? But here, we are living in the era of office besties, work wives or work husbands, so the trend justifies. But, irrespective of how close you are to your work friends, 65 per cent of Indians still prefer travelling with multigenerational families, 60 per cent with their partners, and 10 per cent opt for solo trips, the report Kale, president and country head – Holidays, MICE, Visa, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd., said, "Indians are not only travelling more, but also increasing spends - choosing depth, discovery and emotion over traditional sightseeing tours. While multigenerational family segments continue to lead, we are seeing a strong emergence of new travel subsets like 'frolleagues' and solo travellers."The survey incorporates insights from over 2,500 respondents recorded over a month's time across digital platforms. And this comes at a time when there's a growing demand for experiential travel and that accounts for 75 per cent, the survey further states. The growing aspirational value of travel is in tandem with the rise of experiential, event-based, and phenomenon-based travel, travel trends of 2025As mentioned earlier, there's a growing demand for experiential travel, which includes phenomenon-based trips like chasing the Northern Lights or visiting Japan during cherry blossom season. Event-led tourism has also seen a sudden boom. All the Swifties, Diljit Dosanjh fans, and Coldplay followers are testament to this trend. A rise of about 20 percent has been observed, driven by global concerts, sporting events, festivals, and from these, wellness tourism and gastronomical experiences have significantly impacted travel as luxury stays, smart planningIn this digital-first scene, social media, OTT, and AI are catalysts for travel and planning. '60% of respondents indicated that social media, OTT platforms, and movies are increasingly shaping their travel decisions,' the survey 85% plan to increase their travel frequency and 84% are ready to spend 20–50% more, both mini-vacations and long getaways are on the cards. Travellers are ready to leverage long weekends, public holidays, and mini-moons to unwind and reconnect. On the other hand, 36 per cent are willing to extend stays and opt for premium experiences like cruises, upscale hotels, heritage properties, travellers are all set to increase their travel in 2025, and Europe tops the list of preferred international destinations. In India, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand have secured the top place in the Indian travel bucket Reel

PM Modi To Flag Off Kashmir Vande Bharat Express: What Makes It Unique
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a Vande Bharat Express train connecting Katra and Srinagar on Friday. In contrast to the 136 other Vande Bharat Express trains already in operation around the nation, this train contains a number of additional amenities to accommodate passengers' needs and operational difficulties in the harsh Kashmir weather. Why Is Kashmir Vande Bharat Special? The Vande Bharat Express in Kashmir is specially designed to operate in extreme cold conditions, including temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. The train is equipped with heated windscreens so it automatically removes frost, improving the driver visibility in extreme cold conditions. The train has advanced heating systems to keep the vacuum system running with warm air even when the temperature goes below zero. It also has thermally insulated washrooms designed to prevent toilet tanks and pipes from freezing. Made under the "Made in India" initiative, the Kashmir Vande Bharat Express is equipped with advanced and modern technology and runs fully on electricity instead of diesel. The train also has an anti-spall layer, which prevents small sharp pieces like snow debris and stones from flying into the train if the windshield or windows are damaged. Kashmir Vande Bharat Express Features The train has an air dryer system for heating, which means it removes moisture from the air and prevents the brake system and other components from freezing in extreme weather conditions. It also features a 5 kVA transformer to power the train. It is also equipped with fully air-conditioned coaches and modern amenities such as automatic plug doors, mobile charging sockets and CCTV facilities. Two Vande Bharat trains will run between Srinagar and Katra via Banihal six days a week, except Wednesday. The train will leave from Srinagar at 8 am, reach Banihal at 9:02 am and arrive in Katra at 10:58 am. It will depart from Katra at 2:55 pm, halt at 4:40 pm and reach Srinagar at 5:53 pm. The travel time between Katra and Srinagar will be cut by two to three hours with the Vande Bharat Express. On Friday, PM Modi will also inaugurate India's first cable-stayed bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge.
