
UAE to use AI-driven drones for Shawwal crescent moon sighting
The UAE Council for Fatwa will use several AI-powered drones from the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory for the Shawwal moon sighting.
Earlier this year, the UAE used the drones for the crescent moon sighting to mark the beginning of Ramadan, becoming the first in the world to do so.
The drones will be equipped with high-precision lenses that will rise more than 300 metres above ground, directed towardsthe location of the moon based on precise astronomical calculations, national news agency Wam reported.
The council selected the historic Al-Hosn landmark as the location for the committee's meeting, drawing inspiration from its national and cultural significance.
Five advanced national observatories, strategically distributed across the country, have been equipped with the latest smart technologies. The observatories include: Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory (Marṣad al-Khatim al-Falakī), Jabal Hafeet Observatory (Marṣad Jabal Ḥafīt), Dubai Crescent Observatory (Marṣad Dubayy li-l-Ahilla), Sharjah Astronomical Observatory (Marṣad al-Shāriqa al-Falakī) and Ras Al Khaimah Observatory (Marṣad Rās al-Khaimah). These observatories will ensure the accuracy of the sighting process the highest levels of efficiency in observation.
This approach aims to overcome challenges that may obstruct visual sighting and ensure the atmospheric clarity needed for accurate observation.
Additionally, innovative AI-powered technologies will be used to analyse images, process data, and determine the location of the crescent's birth and the possibility of its visibility with precision.
The AI-backed drones will complement traditional methods of crescent sighting, Wam added.

UAE maintains IAEA's Broader conclusion for 3rd consecutive year; showcases commitment to peaceful nuclear energy
ABU DHABI (WAM) For the third consecutive year, the United Arab Emirates has received the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) "Broader Conclusion" in the IAEA's 2024 Safeguards Implementation Report, the highest level of assurance granted by the Agency. This recognition affirms that all declared nuclear materials in the UAE are used for peaceful purposes. The IAEA's conclusion reflects the UAE's robust regulatory infrastructure, unwavering commitment to nuclear transparency, and strict adherence to international non-proliferation obligations. The Broader Conclusion is based on information the UAE provides under its non-proliferation agreements with the IAEA, including details about nuclear sites, their operations, and reports on nuclear materials and technologies. It also includes additional information the UAE shares voluntarily. The IAEA verifies the validity of this information through inspections, evaluations, and assessment, while also considering other sources like open-source information or third-party reports. As a result of the Broader Conclusion, the IAEA has commenced the implementation of 'Integrated Safeguards,' in the UAE. This approach optimises verification efforts and allows for a reduction in inspection frequency while maintaining high standards of oversight. The implementation of Integrated Safeguards not only reinforces international recognition of the UAE's commitment to nuclear transparency but also delivers operational efficiencies for both FANR and its Licensees. In 2021 the UAE marked a key step in strengthening its safeguards system and commitment to nuclear non-proliferation by completing the final part of its Subsidiary Arrangements with the IAEA, fulfilling all obligations under the Safeguards Agreement. The UAE continued to implement its Safeguards Support Programme to the IAEA throughout 2024, providing knowledge, expertise, and resources to enhance the effectiveness and efficacy of IAEA safeguards.

NYU Abu Dhabi researchers develop paper-based diagnostic tool for infectious disease detection
