UAE Defence Ministry agrees military partnership with US

The National19-05-2025

The UAE's Ministry of Defence on Monday announced a major defence partnership with the US. The letter of intent was signed by Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of State for Defence Affairs, and US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth at a ceremony held at the ministry's headquarters in Abu Dhabi. 'This letter of intent represents a joint commitment to develop a structured roadmap aimed at enhancing joint military co-operation, capacity development, and achieving long-term defence alignment between the two countries,' the UAE ministry posted on X. 'The two sides will collaborate on a phased framework to enhance bilateral force readiness, increase interoperability, and deepen innovation-driven co-operation.' As part of the partnership, the US Defence Innovation Unit will work on a new strategic initiative with the UAE's Tawazun Council, the country's defence and security acquisitions authority. This collaboration will enable joint research and development while expanding industrial and investment partnerships, the UAE ministry said. A partnership with the Texas National Guard was also announced, with the UAE joining the US National Guard Partnership Programme. This will strengthen co-operation on integrated air and missile defence, cybersecurity, disaster response, and operational planning. It follows US President Donald Trump's high-stakes tour of the Gulf last week, marking what regional observers view as a significant reset in relations between Washington and its Arab allies. The US leader secured $2 trillion worth of commercial deals and investment pledges for the US, the White House said, with a focus on sectors including aviation, artificial intelligence, technology, defence and energy. In a video posted on Sunday, Mr Trump spoke of a special relationship with the "amazing" UAE while predicting that the Emirates will become a global leader in artificial intelligence. 'You're an amazing country,' Mr Trump said. 'You're a rich country. You can have your choice, but I know you'll never leave my side, and you know the special relationship that we and our country has. We have now, I think, substantially over $10 trillion of investment, and now when I add the $1.4 trillion we easily break that number.' 'We really appreciate your confidence and investment, that's your biggest investment that you've ever made, and we really appreciate it. And we're going to treat you very, as you should be, magnificently,' he added. Speaking about President Sheikh Mohamed, he said: "You're a magnificent man and it's an honour to be with you.'

Take A Tour Of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi's Waterfront Boutique Full Of Exquisite Trinkets

From Emirati mkhaweer to Amazigh homeware, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi's new space is a quiet invitation to rediscover global craft and heritage Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi wears her heritage on her sleeve. A woman of many facets – president of the American University of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority, among others – her latest venture, Bait Elowal, is a homecoming of sorts. Tucked along the Sharjah waterfront, this culinary destination is designed to feel like home. The name itself reflects its philosophy – 'Bait' meaning home, and 'Elowal', an old Emirati term once used to describe a returning traveller, someone who comes back not just with things, but with memories, knowledge and discoveries gathered along the way. At its heart is Soghat Elowal, a boutique – more cabinet de curiosités than concept store – curated with handcrafted treasures from around the world, each with its own tale to tell. From hand-embroidered Emirati mkhaweer and rare Amazigh homeware to vintage Indian jewellery, the boutique is a tribute to heritage and craftsmanship. 'To understand Soghat Elowal, it must be seen in the context of Bait Elowal, where every element carries the imprint of journeys taken and stories gathered along the way,' explains Al Qasimi. The pieces showcased reflect her travels – she's instantly drawn to places where heritage lives in the hands of the artisans. 'When I come across a piece that draws me, I want to know more. There is always a journey behind it, a childhood memory, a family tradition, a skill passed down generations.' Visitors can browse crystals, sandalwood, hand-bound books and even a signature perfume, Terra, created exclusively for Bait Elowal, its crystal- topped bottle designed to live on long after the scent has faded. Naturally, everything is rooted in sustainability. 'Craftsmanship has always been sustainable. It employs local hands, uses what is available and respects the pace of tradition. At Soghat Elowal, we're trying to reclaim that feeling. To build a sustainability narrative grounded in culture versus consumption.' Ultimately, the space is more than just objects – it's a reminder to slow down and engage in the quiet joy of discovery. 'I want visitors to remember what it means to pause and engage with something that was made with care and intention.'

'First day of Eid always feels great': UAE worshippers look to reconnect with loved ones

Emiratis and residents across the UAE have marked the first day of Eid Al Adha with prayers and celebrations. At Hayy Juma bin Abbaad Al Hamli in Abu Dhabi, hundreds of worshippers attended morning prayers on Friday. 'The first day of Eid feels great,' Zayed Al Mazroui told The National. 'It's the sense of connection it brings, everyone's reaching out to everyone, offering up their Eid greetings, and it's a nice way to reconnect. "I'm celebrating Eid with the family this year and will be visiting cousins and aunts and uncles. It's a hectic day, but I'm looking forward to it.' Pakistani resident Danish Haq described it as "a day that already feels full of peace and joy". He added: "Today we'll celebrate with our close friends and family, I'm really excited every Eid to see everyone and celebrate together. 'Eid in the UAE always feels great. Our whole family might not be here but the friends I've made in my stay here are almost like family themselves. I'm always excited to start Eid celebrations with them.' The UAE's leaders have also marked the first day of Eid. President Sheikh Mohamed performed Eid Al Adha prayers at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The sermon addressed the value of sincerity, its concept and forms, and was titled Our Eid is Sincerity, state news agency Wam reported. In a message posted on X, Sheikh Mohamed said: "To my brothers, the Rulers of the Emirates, citizens and residents of the UAE, and Muslims around the world, I wish you a blessed Eid Al Adha and pray for God to grant lasting peace and harmony to all." Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, also issued an Eid message. "We congratulate the Arab and Islamic nation after the blessed Eid Al Adha and we say to the pilgrims of the House of Allah: May God accept your Hajj and make it an accepted Hajj. We ask God to bring this great occasion back to us and to you with blessings, goodness, prosperity and peace." What is Eid Al Adha? Eid Al Adha, which means 'festival of the sacrifice', is the latter of the two Eid holidays celebrated across the Arab world, coming after Eid Al Fitr. Eid Al Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim being asked by God in a dream to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as a test of his faith. As with other religious holidays in the Emirates, it is a time for friends and family to gather, often over meals, and reflect on their lives and faith. It is customary for families who have the means to have a goat or sheep slaughtered and share the meat with relatives and the less fortunate. Employees in the public and private sectors have been granted leave from Thursday, June 5, to Sunday, June 8, to mark the holiday, with work to resume on Monday, June 9.
