Chicago man wins $1 million after buying scratch-off ticket at Far North Side gas station
An Illinois Lottery player is celebrating after winning $1 million after purchasing a scratch-off ticket at a Far North Side gas station.
Ashur Al Rahib purchased the $10 Red Hot Millions scratch-off at a Mobil gas station at 2500 W. Peterson Ave. in the West Ridge neighborhood.
He said he stopped by the station often and, on that day, was not sure which ticket to pick. One of the station's employees helped with choosing, which led to the big win.
"The store associate, Romy, showed me a few options but covered the names of the games, so I couldn't see them. I randomly pointed at one – and I can't believe the ticket I chose has made me a millionaire!" Al Rahib said.
"Ashur is a good and hardworking man. He's been coming here for a long time, so we've gotten to know each other," Romy Singh said. "After realizing his ticket won $1 million, Ashur came back and told me, 'You gave me good luck, thank you!' He was so happy, and I'm very happy for him."
It's not the first time the store has sold a winning ticket for a big prize. In the last two years, the station also sold a $25,000 and a $50,000 winning lottery ticket.
Al Rahib said he would use his winnings to buy a small building and open a meat market and bakery. He will also donate some to his church. He is also advising other lottery winners to "do good things with the money" and remember to "give back."
For selling the winning ticket, the gas station will receive a one percent bonus, or $10,000.

State gas price average stays mostly steady
The average price of gasoline in New York is $3.08 per gallon, down 0.6 cents from last week, and the national average is down 4.8 cents from a week ago standing at $3.13. According to GasBuddy data, the national average is up 3.1 cents from a month ago and 43.0 cents lower than a year ago. Prices in New York State are 3.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and 56.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. 'While the national average didn't fall quite as far as anticipated for Memorial Day, it was still one of the most affordable since 2021 — and, when adjusted for inflation, among the cheapest in nearly a decade,' Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said. 'As we move into the heart of summer, I believe we're likely to see a relatively stable stretch for gas prices as refinery maintenance wraps up. Don't expect the national average to rise above $3.30 per gallon, nor drop much below $3 for now. While refining issues on the West Coast are beginning to ease, several factors could still influence prices in the weeks ahead — including growing uncertainty around the upcoming hurricane season. We'll also be watching OPEC+'s meeting this week to see if they boost oil production again for July as well.' The top 10% of gas stations have a reported average of $4.60 per gallon and the bottom averaging $2.54. California has the highest average price per gallon at $4.77, followed by Hawaii at $4.46 and Washington at $4.35 The state with the lowest average price is Mississippi at $2.62 per gallon, Louisiana at $2.62 and Alabama at $2.71. The most common price per gallon encountered by motorists in the US remains unchanged at $2.99. As of Tuesday, May 27 these are the reported prices per gallon from stations around the North Country.
