Jersey Bulls win promotion after play-off victory
The islanders had topped the Combined Counties Premier South table at the end of the season, but a three point deduction for playing suspended player dropped them to second place and into the play-offs.
But a capacity crowd at St Helier's Springfield Stadium saw them reach their highest level since joining the English football league system in 2019.
It means the islanders will play in Isthmian League Division One South East next season facing sides based mainly in Kent, Sussex and south London.
Joe Kilshaw blasted Bulls ahead in the 11th minute as he got on the end of Miguel Carvalho's pass inside the penalty area.
Lorne Bickley almost doubled the lead four minutes later before Elijah Simpson had a good effort for Cobham.
Cobham began to up the pressure and Bulls needed a superb goal line clearance from James Queree and an excellent save from goalkeeper Euan van der Vilet from the rebound to keep them ahead at half time.
The islanders started the second half off better and were rewarded with a second goal when Fraser Barlow flicked home from close range after good work by Bickley.
Bulls hit the post soon after but a nervy finish was ensured when Cobham were awarded a 70th-minute penalty which van der Vliet saved, but Patrick Murray converted from the rebound.
Despite Cobham's continued pressure as they searched for an equaliser Bulls held out to ensure scenes of joy for their home fans.

Non-league team win title after finishing third
The victory represents a second promotion for the island side since they were formed in 2019 - but a first done via on field performance.
The club had won all 36 of their matches in Combined Counties Division One in the 2019-20 season before the Covid-19 pandemic saw the campaign annulled.
After the 2020-21 season was also wiped out by the pandemic Jersey Bulls were promoted to their current level after a restructuring of the leagues in the summer of 2021.
They finished fourth in their first season in the ninth tier and third a year later - both seasons saw the top two teams win promotion automatically.
Last season they were second, but a play-off was introduced and the islanders were knocked out by AFC Croydon Athletic in the semi-finals.
This season, after just two league defeats under new boss Elliott Powell, the island side thought they had finally won their first-ever title before their points deduction.
But they have managed to put that disappointment behind them as Powell won promotion in his first season in charge.
"It was obviously good to start quick and always nice to get a goal," goalscorer Kilshaw told BBC Radio Jersey.
"I thought we were good and maybe should have killed the game and put it 3-0, but luckily we saw it out at then end.
"I'm sure most of the lads will tell you that it's taken over our lives for the last 11 months.
"What we've been through in the last month or so has been pretty brutal, not just for ourselves but our families having to deal with what we're going through, so to get over the line is brilliant.
"This is our biggest achievement in football, no-one in Jersey's ever been promoted to step four.
"I don't know when it'll sink in, but we'll have a good night and enjoy it."
In total Jersey Bulls suffered just three defeats all season - they lost to title rivals Whyteleafe and Redhill in the league and were knocked out of the FA Vase by Whitstable Town, who went on to win the title at Wembley.
It ended a superb first season as manager for Powell, who succeeded Gary Freeman as Bulls manager last year after guiding Jersey to an Island Games gold medal in 2023.
"In terms of a Jersey football achievement I think this has to be number one," Powell told BBC Radio Jersey
"Cobham were a great side and commiserations to them - they're the best-coached side we've played in the league, they've got patterns of play, they're really efficient at set pieces and defensively they're solid - we really had to be at our very best today to beat them.
"Whatever's happened can't happen again - yes we've got over the line, but we shouldn't have been playing in these games, so there's a lot of things that as an island we ned to improve on now.
"We're not going to get a group of players like this again, let's make sure we use the absolute most of them.
"I said before the game the James Queree's, Luke Campbell's and Luke Watson's, they're Jersey football Hall of Famers, they're once in a generation-type players so we need to make sure that as an island we get right behind them.
"This was Jersey at it's best, a sea of red and everyone getting right behind us and that last five or 10 minutes was nervy, but those fans got us over it."

Saks Fifth Avenue's Latest AI Venture: A Virtual Voice Assistant Called Sophie
Saks Fifth Avenue is getting deeper into AI. The luxury retailer has partnered with two tech companies, NLX and Amazon Web Services (AWS), to provide an AI-powered virtual voice assistant for conversations with customers. More from WWD Monique Billings Talks WNBA Off-court Style, Love for Tyra Banks and More Amazon and Saks Take Their Relationship to the Hamptons Lectra's Maximilien Abadie on Reshaping Fashion's Future With AI and a Consumer-first Mindset Shoppers can call Saks and ask 'Sophie,' the virtual assistant, questions about the status of orders and returns, details on their gift cards, store assistance, price match policy and other subjects. There is also an optional texting component, so if Sophie requests your order number or zip code, you can submit a text with the information, or continue to speak to the virtual assistant. With some tasks, such as changing a password or an address, it's not necessarily practical over a voice-only interface, particularly if a customer does not speak clearly enough. NLX has patented its dual virtual voice and text exchange capability. Saks Fifth Avenue customers also still have the option to request a human assistant. Such virtual voice technologies are widely used by banks, tech firms, health care organizations and 411 directory assistance, but not so much by retailers, with a few exceptions such as Amazon and Walmart. Saks Fifth Avenue implemented the NLX technology in April but just decided to publicize it after piloting it on a limited basis to remove any kinks before fully rolling it out. With the NLX proprietary no-code platform and with the help of Amazon Web Services, Saks built, tested and analyzed voice-first, generative AI-powered conversations in a matter of weeks without needing to tap IT resources. In the future, Saks could enable its virtual voice assistant to respond to a wider set of questions including inquiries on private label credit cards, or to help customers asking for suggestions when they are searching for merchandise. Other possibilities are extending the technology so customers can converse in languages other than English, and extending the technology to Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Off 5th, which along with Saks Fifth Avenue, are part of Saks Global. 'In a nutshell, NLX enables anyone from individuals to very large organizations to build and deploy these conversational applications,' said Andrei Papancea, chief executive officer of NLX, which specializes in conversational AI with a platform for building and managing chat, voice and multimodal applications at scale. 'So if you're a brand like Saks, or United or Toyota which are also our customers, and you want to provide your end customers with the ability to talk to your brand in this free-form natural way, the NLX platform allows you to build such applications.' Comcast and United Airlines are also NLX clients. Amazon also provides the critical infrastructure for operating this technology through its cloud services business unit, Papancea said. NLX stands for natural language experiences, which in technology refers to interactions between humans and computers involving everyday language, not technical inputs. 'Saks Fifth Avenue understands that its customers expect excellence in everything, and their post-purchase service experiences are no exception,' Papancea said. 'At its core, luxury is personal. By thoughtfully integrating advanced technology like NLX, we are not replacing the human touch, we are enhancing it,' said Jessica Bengtzen, vice president of service centers for Saks Global, who listed several advantages to using the NLX technology. She said it 'deflects high-volume inquiries and provide immediate support with no wait times, and improves the customer experience with intuitive, conversational self-service. These time savings scale to measurable gains in workforce efficiency, service speed and bottom-line performance, all while increasing customer satisfaction and driving loyalty.' Bengtzen also indicated that by redeploying some of the workforce, service improves 'across all facets of the customer journey.' Basically, it reduces agent call volume for routine inquiries, enabling them to focus on complex customer needs and prioritize more meaningful customer interactions. So far, the voice technology has decreased agent call volume by about 20 percent, Saks said. 'We are pleased with the early results and positive customer adoption,' said Bengtzen. 'If this momentum continues, we anticipate deploying more broadly across our Saks Global brands.' AI technology can also lead to a reduction in headcount and costs. Asked if the implementation of the virtual voice system has led to, or could lead to some headcount reduction, Bengtzen replied, 'With this technology, our intention is to enhance our teams' capabilities, enabling them to work smarter. By automating routine tasks, we're empowering our teams to focus on higher-value interactions that require human judgment, creativity and care.' As previously reported, Saks Global is seeking to reduce annual expenses by approximately $600 million through consolidations and cutbacks. Saks is navigating a tough business climate marked by a global slowdown in consumer luxury spending which is complicated by Saks' efforts to repair relations with vendors and catch up on hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid bills. Some vendors have recently been made whole, others not as of yet. Saks Global, considered the largest multibrand luxury retailer in the world, operates 70 full-line luxury store locations, additional off-price locations and five e-commerce websites. Aside from its latest tech innovation with NLX, the group also uses AI for personalizing marketing communications to customers through its websites and mobile apps involving suggesting products they might be interested based on past preferences on styles and brands, and other purposes. Saks has a history working with Salesforce, which uses AI for predictive analytics, personalization and customer relationship management, as well as Amazon, which uses AI for Alexa. In April, Saks Fifth Avenue launched on Amazon's Luxury Stores platform with a storefront. Both Amazon and Salesforce provided financial support for Saks Global's $2.7 billion acquisition of the Neiman Marcus Group in December 2024. Two apparel industry giants also invested in Saks Global's purchase of NMG, the Authentic Brands Group and G-III. Saks' technology initiatives are integral to the agenda at the Saks Global to 'reset' the luxury customer experience, as the company's chief executive officer Marc Metrick has said. The agenda centers around intensifying personalization and bolstering customer service, and involve several operational aspects and integrations, such as inventory sharing between Saks and Neiman's which is currently being tested in one market, enriched data, deeper customer insights and smoother interactions with consumers, and utilizing AI to a greater degree. Thinking of AI innovations for the future, Papancea said: 'Saks Fifth Avenue could roll out, if they were interested, an 'AI personal shopper.' You go and be like, Hey, I'm going to a gala at the Met in two weeks. Here's the theme. What should I wear? And then it won't just come back to you with like textual descriptions. It will give you product recommendations, add them to your cart if you accept, and be able to even check out and pay in that conversational experience. That would also be leveraging unique capabilities from NLX.' Asked if some customers believe they are conversing with a real human versus a virtual voice, Papanceo replied, 'What we recommend to customers is they don't misrepresent that they're talking to a real person like they should say, Hey, I'm the Saks AI assistant. My name is Sophie. I'm here to assist you or to take you to a customer support agent. That's our recommendation to brands.'Best of WWD Macy's Is Closing 66 Stores in 2025 — Here's the List, Live Updates Inside the Demise of Lord & Taylor COVID-19 Spikes Elevate Retail Concerns

Wall Street steadies after Nvidia, Palantir and other AI stars trim their losses
Stock indexes ended mixed on Wednesday after Nvidia, Palantir and other superstar stocks pared most of their steep losses from the morning. The S&P 500 dipped 0.2% after trimming a loss that reached 1.1% earlier in the day and remains near its all-time high set last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 16 points, or less than 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.7%. The day's action centered again around stocks caught up in the mania around artificial-intelligence technology. Nvidia, whose chips are powering much of the world's move into AI, sank as much as 3.9% during the morning and was on track to be the heaviest weight on Wall Street following its 3.5% fall on Tuesday. But it clawed back nearly all of Wednesday's drop and finished with a dip of just 0.1%. As it pared its loss, so did broad market indexes because Nvidia is Wall Street's most influential stock by being its most valuable. Palantir Technologies, another AI darling, fell 1.1% to add to its 9.4% loss from the day before, but it had been down as much as 9.8% Wednesday morning. One possible contributor to the swoon was a study from MIT's Nanda Initiative that warned that most corporations are not yet seeing any measurable return from their generative AI investments, according to Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, global head of equities at UBS Global Wealth Management. But the larger factor may be the simple criticism that prices for such stock simply shot too high, too fast, amid the furor around AI and became too expensive. Nvidia, whose profit report scheduled for next week is one of Wall Street's next major events, had soared 35.5% for the year so far heading into Tuesday. Palantir had surged even more, more than doubling. The tech stocks still have supporters, though, who say AI will bring the next generational revolution in business. Mixed profit reports from big U.S. retailers helped keep the rest of the market in check. TJX, the company behind the TJ Maxx and Marshalls stores, climbed 2.7% after beating analysts' forecasts for profit and revenue. It also raised its forecast for profit over its full fiscal year, while CEO Ernie Herrman said TJX is seeing 'strong demand at each of our U.S. and international businesses' and that its current quarter is off to a strong start. Lowe's added 0.3% after the home-improvement retailer delivered a profit for the latest quarter that topped analysts' expectations. Target, meanwhile, tumbled 6.3%. The struggling retailer said that CEO Brian Cornell plans to step down Feb. 1 and that an insider, 20-year veteran Michael Fiddelke, will replace him. He helped reenergize the company, but it has struggled to turn around weak sales in a more competitive post-COVID retail landscape. Estee Lauder dropped 3.7% after offering a forecast for profit this upcoming fiscal year that fell short of Wall Street's estimates. The beauty company said it expects tariffs to shave roughly $100 million off its upcoming earnings. La-Z-Boy sank 12.1% after the furniture maker's profit and revenue for the spring came up shy of analysts' expectations. All told, the S&P 500 fell 15.59 points to 6,395.78. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 16.04 to 44,938.31, and the Nasdaq composite fell 142.10 to 21,172.86. The week's biggest news for Wall Street is likely arriving on Friday, when Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will give a highly anticipated speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The hope on Wall Street is that Powell will hint that cuts to interest rates are coming soon. The Fed has kept its main interest rate steady this year, primarily because of the fear of the possibility that President Donald Trump's tariffs could push inflation higher. But a surprisingly weak report on job growth across the country may be superseding that. Treasury yields have come down sharply on expectations for an easing of interest rates, and the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.29% from 4.30% late Tuesday. Trump has been angrily calling for lower interest rates, often insulting Powell personally while doing so. Trump on Wednesday called on a top official at the Federal Reserve, Lisa Cook, to resign after a member of his administration accused her of committing mortgage fraud. In stock markets abroad, indexes were mixed across Europe and Asia. London's FTSE 100 rose 1.1% despite a report that said inflation in the U.K. rose more than expected through July, in part due to soaring airfares and food prices. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.2%. Shares that trade there of the Chinese toy company Pop Mart International Group soared 12.5% after its CEO said its annual revenue could top $4 billion this year and announced the release of a mini version of its popular Labubu dolls. Choe writes for the Associated Press.

Mid-sized US cities dominate ranking of emerging business destinations
American Express has released new travel data revealing emerging cities for business trips, and the results may surprise you. In a report released last month, the company analyzed year-over-year growth in hotel and airline transactions among commercial customers. American Express's report made no mention of bustling coastal markets like New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco, but rather several mid-sized cities were included in list of the emerging business travel areas, a handful of which have experienced population growth in recent years. According to the company, these cities are rising in popularity as business travel destinations. Richmond, Virginia A hub for several Fortune 500 companies, like Performance Food Group, CarMax, Altria and Dominion Energy, American Express says it has seen an increase in companies flocking to the southern city due to incentive-based business expansion legislation. Virginia has exceeded $100 billion in capital investment commitments from company expansions statewide, Gov. Glenn Youngkin said in a news release in March. Richmond is undergoing developments in the Richmond Diamond District, which will transform 67 acres into a neighborhood to keep up with demand. Another project will target the City Center Innovation District to accomplish similar goals, making the city more attractive to businesses. Columbus, Ohio Home to over 240 startups, Columbus has managed to attract several biotech and technology companies specializing in AI innovation. Census data from this year shows Columbus is major driver of growth in the Midwest, with a growing population that nears 1 million. Charleston, South Carolina Charleston, known for its stunning beaches and charming historic architecture, has experienced a boom of tech, aerospace and automotive companies flocking to set up hubs there, Amex notes. It recently hit a record of $14.03 billion generated from tourism in 2024, a 7.1% increase from the prior year and businesses are taking notice. Ingevity, a company that markets and manufactures specialty chemicals, announced last year it is investing $53 million over five years in its Charleston County manufacturing facility. "Ingevity's $53.3 million investment in their Charleston County facility underscores their confidence in our community," said Charleston County Council Chairman Herbert Ravenel Sass III at the time of the announcement. "This significant commitment reflects the strength of our partnership and highlights Charleston County as a leader in fostering innovation and sustainable growth." Boise, Idaho This city experienced rapid growth during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to moving data from HireAHelper, four times as many people moved to Boise, Idaho than left it in 2020. The migration primarily stemmed from people in western states moving to the area. In 2020, the city's population was about 230,000 and has since increased to roughly 237,000. That rapid increase has business leaders setting up shop in the city, with companies in the software, cleantech and outdoor lifestyle industries expanding their presence in Boise. New Orleans Walkability, a compact layout, and unique culture is what's driving business to New Orleans, American Express reports. Additionally, city leaders have taken steps to increase ongoing infrastructure enhancements at local venues. Those investments are expected to attract more conventions, create jobs and boost the local economy. Last week, 1834 Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm, announced the launch of the inaugural $20 million fund to invest in startups found by alumni of Tulane University, one of the city's universities, further bolstering economic mobility. 1834 Ventures is channeling the funds into Louisiana "with the goal of building a more vibrant startup ecosystem" and "diversifying the state's economy," according to a news release from Louisiana Economic Development.
