Jason Bourne is coming back – but what do we want from him this time?

The Guardian8 hours ago
What do you consider to be the end of Jason Bourne? For connoisseurs, Bourne's story definitively ended in 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum, which masterfully wrapped up the story that began five years earlier with The Bourne Identity. For the less discerning viewer, it ended with 2016's scraggy and inconsequential Jason Bourne. For the three people who watched the USA Network's 2019 series Treadstone, it ended there. So which is it?
Trick question, because Jason Bourne is never actually going to end, ever. This week, NBCUniversal has won a bidding war to acquire all non-publishing rights to Robert Ludlum's Bourne and Treadstone properties in perpetuity. The deal, described as 'very large', means that Bourne is now firmly as much a part of Universal as Jaws, Jurassic World and the Minions. It also means we are never getting rid of him. As the Universal Pictures president, Peter Cramer, said: 'We're energized to continue expanding the Bourne universe into the future with exciting new stories for global audiences.'
This is potentially very interesting news, because if any franchise needs a shot in the arm, it's Bourne. While its first three movies are rightly regarded as peerless, things really went off the rails after that. There was 2012's The Bourne Legacy, made without Matt Damon during that weird time where every franchise on Earth seemed to hire Jeremy Renner as its new face. There was 2016's Jason Bourne, where Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon attempted to depict Bourne as a slightly narky nightclub bouncer. And then there was Treadstone, which didn't feature Bourne at all and was canned after a single season.
It might have been a wobbly couple of decades for the franchise, but it's important to remember just how revelatory Bourne was at the beginning. As soon as The Bourne Identity landed in 2002, with its grounded, propulsive, parkour-based action, it instantly made every other film in its genre look creaky and ancient.
It was released in the same year as Die Another Day and, while Bond outgrossed Bourne two to one, the pure athleticism of the latter made the former – with its phalanx of invisible cars, diamond-faced baddies and shoddy CGI – look ready for the glue factory. Pierce Brosnan was ditched, Daniel Craig was hired and, tellingly, Casino Royale ended up being stuffed to the gills with an absolute Bourneload of parkour.
Already there is talk of bringing Matt Damon back into the fold, with Deadline revealing that a script by Joe Barton has been written but not greenlit. And this would be the most sensible avenue, since people automatically equate Bourne with Damon and, thanks to his leading role in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey next year, his stock has rarely been higher. However, he is also in his mid-50s, which puts him squarely in 'Liam Neeson in Taken' territory, which isn't necessarily the best long-term strategy for the franchise.
Then again, the character isn't exactly wanting for source material. Although Robert Ludlum wrote three Bourne books before his death in 2001, many, many more have been knocked out by various other writers since then. Maybe there'll be an adaptation of 2009's The Bourne Deception, or 2016's The Bourne Enigma, or this year's The Bourne Vendetta, or next year's The Bourne Revenge. There is now such a glut of Bourne books that perhaps the character needs to be reset with a younger actor to get them all made.
One thing to avoid, perhaps, is deepening the mythology too much. Treadstone proved that any appetite the character has for the Bourne franchise begins and ends with the character of Jason Bourne. We're already drowning in watered-down IP, so the thought of sitting through a spin-off property about the madcap adventures of Julia Stiles sounds absolutely exhausting.
Most pressing of all, though, is making sure that there is a place for Jason Bourne in the current landscape. Since the peerless original Bourne trilogy ended, James Bond has lived and died and been bought by Jeff Bezos. The MCU burst into life, dominated the market and then slowly asphyxiated on its own bloat. The go-to action blockbuster reference for a long time was Mission: Impossible's maximalist stuntwork, but even that came unstuck in the end.
We find ourselves in exactly the place we were at the start of the century. The action world has stagnated, and there is a window for something to come along and revolutionise the game. Jason Bourne already did this once. If he can come out of retirement and do it again, the investment will be more than worth it.

Kylie Minogue responds to Taylor Swift comparisons after fans accuse singer of copying her

Kylie Minogue has responded to Taylor Swift comparisons on Instagram on Thursday after fans accused the singer of copying her. The Cruel Summer hitmaker sent Swifties around the world into a meltdown when she unveiled the cover of her new album, The Life Of A Showgirl, on Wednesday. But some have since accused the American star, 35, of copying iconic pop queen Kylie's Showgirl: The Greatest Hits era. Now Kylie has shared her opinion on the claims as she shared a number of stunning pictures of her dressed up from her own Showgirl Era. The Can't Get You Out Of My Head hitmaker wrote: 'When all your friends start sending you your Showgirl mems!!! Awww. 'Showgirl life is 'a thing', multi dimensional and so much more than feathers and dazzle. 'Respect and admiration to all my fellow hard working Showgirls'. The Aussie icon commenced her Showgirl world tour in 2005 with performances in Europe before travelling to her native Melbourne, where she was diagnosed with breast cancer, causing her to postpone the remaining dates. Several fans flocked to social media to claim Taylor ripped off Kylie's showgirl look by posing in feathers and a gem-encrusted outfit. 'Kylie is the one and only showgirl! No shade to Taylor but Kylie is the ultimate,' one person wrote on Instagram. 'There's only one Showgirl and that's Kylie!!' another commented while a third person agreed: 'There is only one Showgirl and that's our Kylie.' Despite some backlash, others rushed to Taylor's defence and insisted that more than one showgirl can exist. 'So is 'showgirl' only reserved for Kylie or what? Don't get me wrong as I am a fan of both Kylie and Taylor... Was just wondering,' one commented. 'These comments dragging Taylor are exhausting. Kylie is one of my faves but how about we stop pitting women against each other?' a second said. Kylie wrote: 'When all your friends start sending you your Showgirl mems!!! Awww. Showgirl life is 'a thing', multi dimensional and so much more than feathers and dazzle' 'Kylie and Taylor should do a collab,' another suggested. It comes after Taylor unveiled first-look images of her jaw-dropping upcoming album artwork to accompany her new record, The Life Of A Showgirl. The 14-time Grammy Award-winning singer, 35, looked nothing short of sensational in a skimpy feathered outfits, which were shared alongside the album announcement. Taylor first dropped the news about her 12th studio album earlier this week while teasing her upcoming appearance on boyfriend Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast. On Wednesday, just as her New Heights episode premiered, the Red singer revealed the official album cover for The Life Of A Showgirl. She confirmed that the album will be released on October 3 — just over a year and a half after the release of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department. In the new album artwork, Taylor sizzled in racy gem-encrusted outfits fit for the stage as she posed in a theatre. Keeping in the showgirl theme, Taylor wore a huge 1920s-themed feathered headpiece and dazzling bodysuit as she gazed away from the camera. Turning up the heat, the Cruel Summer songstress wowed in a black and red glittering strapless bodysuit as she posed lying on a chair. She left her long blonde tresses loose and accessorised with coordinated long gloves and sexy fishnet tights. For the main album cover, Taylor showed off her amazing figure in a jewelled bodysuit as she lay in a bathtub. The busty starlet stares stoically at the camera in the striking image captured by famed photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

Kelly Clarkson's ex Brandon Blackstock suffered seizures before passing

Brandon Blackstock's death was not an easy one. According to his death certificate, the ex-husband of talk show host Kelly Clarkson suffered from multiple seizures before his passing. The former stepson of Reba McEntire had been fighting skin cancer - malignant melanoma - for three years. He died last week at his home in Butte, Montana at the age of 48. People obtained the death certificate from the Butte-Silver Bow County Clerk and Recorder's office on Thursday. His death is marked as from 'natural causes.' The rodeo producer reportedly had 'significant conditions contributing to death but not resulting in the underlying cause.' No autopsy was performed on Blackstock and he was cremated, according to the death certificate. Brandon was married to the Clarkson from 2013 to 2022; during their marriage, they welcomed two children together, daughter River Rose, 11, and son Remy, nine. The late music manager was also father to daughter Savannah, 23, and son Seth, 18, both of whom he shared with his first wife Melissa Ashforth. Blackstock also became a grandpa in January 2022 when his daughter Savannah welcomed her first child, a son named Lake Lee, with her husband Quentin Lee . Just one month before Brandon's death, his daughter Savannah had announced that she was expecting a second child, a baby girl, with her husband. Meanwhile, the father of Clarkson 's former assistant Brittney Marie Jones, who was dating her ex-husband Blackstock before his death, claims they were 'soulmates.' Jones' dad broke his silence on the matter in a Facebook post that has since been made private. 'Yesterday we lost a good man, Brandon Blackstock, my daughter's soulmate, and I considered him my son,' he wrote on a now private post, seen by Page Six . 'My sincere condolences to Brittney Jones and family. We're sure going to miss your funny humor. R.I.P hoss!' Blackstock's online obituary , released on Tuesday, revealed that he had been in a relationship with Jones and was quietly building a new life with her in Montana , previously unknown to many fans. 'After more than 20 years in the music business, Brandon found his way back to the mountains and the cowboy way of life he always wanted to live,' the obituary read. 'He found a homestead and a love in Butte, Montana.' It went on: 'Brandon, along with his beautiful and loving partner in life and business, Brittney Marie Jones, started building a life, building companies, and working tirelessly to create Headwaters Livestock Auction and what will live on as his legacy, The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana.' In a bombshell revelation, a December 2024 report on Blackstock and Jones' rodeo business listed Jones as Clarkson's 'former assistant.' A prior LinkedIn profile for Jones highlighted in the report reveals she served as an executive assistant to Brandon Blackstock as well as an assistant to Kelly Clarkson while Blackstock managed the singer. 'I successfully assistant managed day to day for artist, Kelly Clarkson under manager, Brandon Blackstock in Los Angeles for music and television,' the profile read, according to The Sun . 'After a change in management for Ms. Clarkson, I transitioned to Executive Assistant for Mr. Blackstock's cattle operation in Montana, where I currently run the office and handle administration work. 'I also currently fulfill personal assistant duties for Mr. Blackstock.' Jones' LinkedIn also identifies her as the Executive Assistant of V Bar V Cattle Co. LLC — formerly Vintage Valley Ranch — one of Blackstock's companies, further tying her to his post-divorce life in Montana. A representative for the family confirmed Blackstock's death in a statement on Thursday, August 7, which read: 'It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. 'Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. 'We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time.' In a statement shared online on Wednesday, August 6, Clarkson revealed a health-related issue with Blackstock forced her to postpone her Las Vegas residency. 'Unfortunately, I need to postpone the remainder of the August Studio Session dates in Las Vegas,' she wrote. 'While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them.

Smitten Taylor Swift gushes over falling in love with Travis Kelce as she reveals emotional choices behind new album

TAYLOR Swift has spoken in detail for the first time about falling in love with NFL star Travis Kelce — admitting she thought he was 'crazy' for publicly asking her for a date. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 35, bagged a first date with the superstar in September 2023 after using his New Heights podcast to beg for a chance. 6 6 6 Appearing alongside Travis, in the latest episode of the show, Taylor, also 35, said: 'This podcast got me a boyfriend, ever since Travis decided to use it as his personal dating app. 'It was such a wild romantic gesture to be like, 'I want to date you'. 'At first when I looked at it I thought, 'This dude didn't get a meet and greet and he is making it everyone's problem'.' Travis admitted he fell head over heels for Taylor after secretly watching her perform at his team's home ground, the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, days before he made his public plea. 'How it worked in 1973!' He initially made a friendship bracelet with his number on it to give to Taylor but was left gutted when his plan failed. Taylor added: 'I never saw those friendship bracelets. He didn't even reach out to management. 'He came with Pat [quarterback Patrick Mahomes ] and thought because he knows the elevator lady that he could talk to her about getting down to my dressing room.' Taylor scoffed: 'That's how it worked in 1973!' Despite joking about her initial concerns, Taylor said she quickly romanticised Travis's very public move. She explained: 'I was like, if this guy isn't crazy — which is a big if — this is the sort of thing I've been writing songs about since I was a teenager. Taylor Swift reveals 'wild' true story of how she met Travis Kelce moments into New Heights podcast appearance 'It felt like a modern version of standing outside my window with a boombox like, 'I want to date you! Do you want to go on a date with me? I made you a friendship bracelet.' 'It was wild, but it worked. I'm glad it worked. I'm just circling back to New Heights to say thank you for this.' Clearly smitten, Taylor continued: 'He is the good kind of crazy. I knew he wasn't crazy the first couple of times we talked. 'He was truly getting to know me, that was very natural, pure and normal. 'The way he could make me laugh about normal things. 'Travis is just a vibe booster in everyone's life he is in. 'He is like a human exclamation mark. 'He is like pressing the enhance colour button.' Taylor has previously dated a string of famous men including DJ Calvin Harris, actor Jake Gyllenhaal and fellow superstar Harry Styles. But the romances never lasted. 6 6 6 Now Taylor has hinted at why she thinks her relationship with Travis will go all the way. She said: 'A huge green flag for me was that Travis has had the same friends since he was four. 'He is very good at maintaining friendships and he is so loyal.' When Taylor and Travis first started dating, they tried to keep their romance as low key as possible. To avoid detection, Taylor even went undercover and walked into the Arrowhead stadium using the main gates rather than the VIP entrance in a bid to deflect any attention away from herself. Taylor said: 'I walked in through the front door. Right through general admission. I had a scarf and a mask. 'There were rumours about us seeing each other but I think people were like, 'What would they talk about?' 'Nobody thought they would see me there or go through general admission.' By January 2024, Taylor was a firm fixture of the Kelce family. She joined Travis on the pitch in Las Vegas to celebrate his Superbowl win against the San Francisco 49ers. And now she is a signed up American football fanatic. Taylor explained: 'He was so non-judgmental about people and not judgmental about me knowing nothing about the world he is in. 'I was not a sporty person. I didn't even know what a tight end was. I fell in love with it [American football] and I became obsessed with it.' Naturally, as with all of Taylor's romances, Travis was thrust into the spotlight and their union became the focus of intense fan speculation. It led to a number of wild allegations, including someone making a fake contract about when and where the pair would end their romance. The hoax, last September, went viral and saw Travis's team furiously deny it. Insisting it is water off a duck's back, Taylor said: 'I detach from the internet in a huge way. I have had my comments disabled on Instagram for ten years. I don't miss it. 'I am not an online person at all. 'I am genuinely terrified to open my DMs — 20million unread DMs. I don't want to go there. 'I love to sew' 'Can you imagine if we just talked about what everyone said about our relationship? That is all we would talk about. 'We are too busy having an actual relationship.' She added: 'My business is making music and taking care of my fans.' Taylor wrapped up her Eras World Tour in Canada in December last year, and since then has been keeping a low profile. Opening up about how a multi-millionaire music megastar spends her days, Taylor conceded she was actually pretty boring. She said: 'All my hobbies are hobbies you could have had in the 1700s. 'I love to sew — I specialise in children's purses and baby blankets. 'I love to paint and I love to cook. I have a baking obsession every six months. 'Right now it's a sour dough obsession. I am really talking about baking 70 percent of the time now. 'I am baking bread and texting my friends to send it to them for feedback. 'I am on sourdough blogs. There is a whole community. 'All I use the internet for is sour dough and when Travis shows me cute otters.' Of taking a break from her mammoth run of gigs, where she performed 51 shows in 22 countries around the world, Taylor added: 'It feels great to be honest. 'I miss it but it was perfect for what it was. It was a lot of physical therapy and a lot of being in a state of discomfort. 'The heels for that long . . . 'I have an acupuncture mat and toe spacers. 'It was the most formative time of my life. I learned so much about how far I can push myself. 'I was on tour for so long and now I'm not on tour. I am getting my hobbies back. 'When I was on tour all I could think of was, 'What is the mash-up this week?' 'Or, 'How do I say welcome to the Eras tour in Portuguese?'' Ever the businesswoman, Taylor used her turn on Travis's podcast to announce her 12th studio album, The Life of A Showgirl. Almost one million fans watched the podcast live — and 17 hours after it was put on to YouTube more than 10million people had viewed it. The Life of A Showgirl is Taylor's first record since 2023's The Tortured Poets Department, which went on to become her 13th UK No1 album. 'Catching lightning in a bottle' That record, which detailed Taylor's break-up with British actor Joe Alwyn and her short lived romance with The 1975's Matty Healy, sold more than 3.4million copies. The Life Of A Showgirl, which comes out October 3, marks a drastic change of tone. Taylor secretly recorded the album last summer when she was in Europe at the height of her Eras Tour success. She said: 'I would do like three shows in a row [and then] I'd have three days off. 'I'd fly to Sweden, go back to the tour, and was actually working on this. I was physically exhausted at this point in the tour, but I was so mentally stimulated and so excited to be creating.' She added: 'This album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life when this tour was going on. That is why it is so vibrant. 'Writing and recording it felt like catching lightning in a bottle.' The album has been produced by Swedish producers Max Martin and Shellback, who previously helped craft some of Taylor's biggest hits. These include 22, Bad Blood, I Knew You Were Trouble and Shake It Off. Taylor said: 'I said I wanted to be as proud of an album as I am for The Eras Tour and they were like that's a lot of pressure. 'I know the pressure I am putting on this record but I don't care as I love it so much. 'It comes from the most infectious, joyful, wild dramatic place I was in my life. It's bangers. 'This is the record I've wanted to make for a very long time'.
