Canada off to gold-medal game at para hockey worlds after 3-0 win over Czechia

BUFFALO – Liam Hickey and Adam Dixon scored 18 seconds apart in the opening period as Canada booked its ticket to the gold-medal game of the world para ice hockey championship on Friday with a 3-0 win over Czechia.
Tyler McGregor also scored for Canada. Hickey and McGregor both had an assist in the game at LECOM Harborcenter.
Canada will next face the winner between the United States and China in a later semifinal.
'We came out flying and kept our composure all night,' Hickey said. 'When we take over games early, there isn't much that can slow us down and I think we did a great job right from the start. Physicality is something the boys love. We play fast and hard.
'Honestly, the Czechs brought it tonight. They came ready to play, but we wore them down. Hard-hitting games like that are so much fun to play in and that mentality of 'hard to play against' is what we will need tomorrow in the gold-medal game, no matter who the opponent is.'
The Canadians have outscored their opponents 30-2, including Friday's win, across four games in the tournament.
Only China has managed to score against Canada, with Canada taking that game 4-2 on Tuesday.

Sweden's Maja Stark wins the U.S. Women's Open for her first major championship

ERIN, Wis. (AP) — Maja Stark continued the steady play she had demonstrated all week to win the U.S. Women's Open and claim her first major championship Sunday at Erin Hills. Stark carded a final round 72 and finished with a four-round total of 7-under 281 to beat top-ranked Nelly Korda and Japan's Rio Takeda by two strokes. Stark received a $2.4 million winner's prize in the biggest event of the women's golf season. The 25-year-old Stark became the sixth Swede to win an LPGA major, and the first since Anna Nordqvist earned the Women's British Open title in 2021. Stark, who played at Oklahoma State from 2019-21, is the first Swede to win a U.S. Women's Open since Annika Sorenstam in 2006. This is Stark's second LPGA title. Canada's Marco Arop wins short-distance title at Grand Slam Track stop

PHILADELPHIA – Edmonton's Marco Arop won the short-distance title at a Grand Slam Track event after finishing fourth in Sunday's men's 1,500-metre race. Arop finished in a personal-best time of three minutes 35.38 seconds to take five points from the race. He had 17 points altogether in the short distances after winning Saturday's 800 metres. That was one point better than Britain's Josh Kerr, who won the 1,500 in 3:34.44 but was fifth in the 800. Arop, the Olympic silver medallist at the Paris Games, has won all three 800-metre Grand Slam races so far. He finished second overall in short distance at the first two stops on the circuit after finishing sixth and seventh in the 1,500. Andre De Grasse of Markham, Ont., was fifth and Aaron Brown of Toronto was seventh in Sunday's 100 metres to finish fourth and fifth respectively in the short sprint category. American Kenny Bednarek swept the races after winning Saturday's 200m. Grand Slam Track was started by American track and field legend Michael Johnson, and is in its inaugural season. The first event was in Kingston, Jamaica, the second in Miami, and the fourth and last one will be in Los Angeles June 27-29. All competitors have to compete in two events and are split into categories — short sprints (100, 200), long sprints (200, 400), short hurdles (100 hurdles for women, 110 hurdles for men, 100 for both), long hurdles (400 hurdles, 400), short distance (800, 1,500), long distance (3,000, 5,000) — with a points system in place. Winners get 12 points, second place gets eight points, third gets six points, fourth gets five points, fifth gets four points, sixth gets three points, seventh gets two points and eighth gets one point. The athlete with the most points after competing in both races from each category is named the 'Slam Champion' for their race group. The overall season leader in points for each race group will be recognized as 'Racer of the Year.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 1, 2025.

Mets get homers from Alonso, Lindor and Soto to finish 3-game sweep with 5-3 win over Rockies

NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor once again homered in a victory and Clay Holmes threw a career-high seven innings Sunday as the New York Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 5-3 win. Pete Alonso hit a three-run shot and Juan Soto also went deep as the Mets won for the seventh time in eight games to finish a 7-2 homestand. They regained sole possession of first place in the NL East, moving a game ahead of Philadelphia. The Rockies lost their eighth straight and fell to 9-50, the worst record through 59 games of any major league team in the modern era (since 1901). They have been swept 10 times in 20 series — tied for the most sweeps through 20 series with the 1962 Mets, the 1970 Milwaukee Brewers and the 1994 Oakland Athletics. Alonso homered in the fourth before Lindor snapped a 3-all tie an inning later. The Mets have won the last 26 games in which Lindor has homered, the second-longest streak in big league history behind the 29-game run authored by Carl Furillo and the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1951-53. Soto connected in the eighth to make it 5-3. Holmes (5-3) gave up three hits — including Orlando Arcia's first-inning solo homer and Tyler Freeman's two-run shot in the fifth. He struck out three and walked none. The right-hander, who entered this season with 300 consecutive relief appearances dating to 2019, has lasted at least six innings in six of his last eight starts. Reed Garrett and Edwin Díaz tossed a scoreless inning apiece, with Díaz earning his 13th save. Rockies rookie Carson Palmquist (0-3) gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings but struck out eight — two more than he'd fanned in his first three starts combined. Key moment Lindor's homer came just after Freeman's tying shot in the fifth. Key stat The Rockies haven't held a lead at the end of consecutive innings since they led for the final four innings of their most recent win, a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees on May 23. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Up next Rockies RHP Germán Márquez (1-7, 7.13 ERA) starts Monday in Miami against RHP Max Meyer (3-4, 4.53). Mets RHP Paul Blackburn is scheduled to make his season debut Monday night at Dodger Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. Blackburn has been rehabbing from right knee inflammation. ___ AP MLB:
