Wichita's HumanKind Ministries gets $1 million for homelessness initiative

Yahoo20-03-2025
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – HumanKind Ministries has received a significant financial boost in its mission to combat homelessness in Wichita.
The Mabee Foundation granted $1 million to support HumanKind's $5.1 million Forward Together campaign, which requires an additional $1.6 million in gifts and pledges by December 2025 to unlock the full amount.
The funds will be used for renovations of six buildings on HumanKind's campus, including Villa Courts, Villa Central, Villa North, and The Studios, which offer 155 affordable housing units for those experiencing homelessness or poverty in Wichita.

'Housing is the key component that successfully transitions individuals from homelessness to a safe, sustainable lifestyle,' Cindy Claycomb, Board Chair of HumanKind, said in a news release. 'The Mabee Foundation recognized that HumanKind's existing campus of affordable, accessible housing provides a unique opportunity to make homelessness a rare and non-recurring instance in our community. That is why they offered to provide the final $1 million of our campaign goal – provided we can raise another $1.6 million by the end of this year.'
Scott Eilert from the campaign committee highlighted the importance of the Mabee Foundation grant, saying in the release, 'The initial $2.5 million in donations allows us to apply for the grant. We're now close to securing the final $1.6 million needed to meet the challenge. Together, these funds will enhance our facilities' energy efficiency and improve both interior and exterior features for residents.'
The renovations will improve HumanKind's housing facilities near the new Multi-Agency Center (MAC), which will centralize services and resources to aid individuals transitioning out of homelessness.
'Between the wraparound services soon to be offered at the MAC and the multiple types of housing offered by HumanKind, we can offer the most vulnerable among us a way to find stability and self-sufficiency,' Dawn Shepler, HumanKind President and CEO, said in the release. 'It's an exciting time for HumanKind, and we hope the community will be generous in helping us make this a reality.'

2025 Humankind 100 List Announced

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Humankind Investments, a quantitatively driven asset manager specializing in socially responsible investments, announced the release of 2025's 'Humankind 100,' its annual ranking of what it believes to be the top U.S. companies offering the greatest benefit to humanity, based on Humankind Investments' proprietary Humankind Value methodology. In response to the challenge of creating transparency around Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data and rankings, Humankind developed a holistic, quantitative way to calculate a company's impact in terms of human benefit versus human suffering. By publishing these rankings each year, and managing our clients' money in accordance with our philosophy, we're optimistic that we can motivate companies to make progress on their own human impact. Humankind's ranking rewards companies that sustain human well-being and significantly improve our daily lives. As such, industries that perform well include healthcare, food, water and technology. This year, Alphabet (GOOGL), which generates substantial value through its free online services like email, maps, and internet search, scored highest in the ranking. The positive value of creating free digital tools for consumers outweighs the negative impact of factors like data harvesting in Humankind's analysis. Other companies rounding out our top 10 include companies involved in providing healthcare products, food, and free digital tools: Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), AbbVie Inc. (ABBV), Pfizer (PFE), Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM), Merck & Co. (MRK), Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc (TMO), Amgen (AMGN), and Apple Inc. (AAPL). The complete rankings – with details on the positive contributions of each company – can be found at 'We launched the Humankind 100 four years ago to help people understand the companies best supporting their quality of life and to encourage companies to continue striving for progress,' said James Katz, founder and CEO of Humankind Investments. The ranking was calculated using Humankind Investments' proprietary Humankind Value methodology, which tends to favor companies that promote human health and improved quality of life. The methodology analyzes each company's positive and negative contributions to society to estimate a single dollar figure that is meant to represent a company's true social and economic value to humanity – its 'Humankind Value.' The methodology draws on a combination of nationally recognized third-party data providers, as well as academic research, government data and NGO data. 'Since day one, our mission has been to invest in what we believe is best for humanity and inspire others to do the same,' continued Katz. 'By publishing these rankings each year, and managing our clients' money in accordance with our philosophy, we're optimistic that we can motivate companies to make progress on their own human impact.' About Humankind Investments Humankind Investments was founded on the premise that it would be better for all of us if we paid closer attention to how our investments affect humankind. We are a quantitatively driven investment manager whose mission is to give investors concrete and measurable ways to invest in a manner that generates rewards for themselves and for humanity. Our robo advisor, Humankind Portfolios, provides our clients with the opportunity to invest in accordance with our universalist, humanistic philosophy. A company's Humankind Value is an estimate of how much value the company creates for humankind, is published annually, and is current as of May 8, 2025 or earlier. It is based on a quantitative analysis that calculates the comprehensive economic value of a company based not only upon its financial performance metrics but also on the costs and benefits to society from conducting its business. This calculation also attempts to take into account the Humankind Value of the company's critical supply chain partners. The components of the calculation include: (i) Investor Value, which is the estimated value to investors on the basis of multi-year profitability; (ii) Consumer Value, which is the estimated value to customers based on the offering of a product or service; (iii) Employee Value, which is the estimated value to employees based on their salaries, bonuses and benefits; and (iv) Societal Value, which is the estimated unaccounted costs and benefits to society from the operation of the company's business. Humankind Investments calculates a single dollar value of a company's Humankind Value, which is intended to capture the aggregate worth of a company based upon its economic impact on humanity, defined as investors, customers, employees, and society at large. It's important to understand that this single dollar value of Humankind Value for a company is not a precise measurement of the economic impact that companies have on humanity – rather, it represents a good faith estimate based on our internal model of how these companies behave and what the estimated impact on humanity of their behavior is. In other words, we've created a simplified mathematical representation of the real world, and are using that to derive this single dollar value for a company. Nebraska sues GM, OnStar over alleged sale of driver data recorded by vehicle tech

LINCOLN, Kan. (KSNW) — The Nebraska attorney general's office said Tuesday it has filed a lawsuit against General Motors (GM) and OnStar for allegedly collecting, processing and selling sensitive driving data from Nebraskans without their knowledge or consent. State Attorney General Mike Hilgers accuses GM and OnStar of installing telematics systems in their vehicles that collect data, including speed, seatbelt usage, driving habits, and location. That data was then allegedly sold to third-party data brokers who used it to create driving scores for individual drivers. Those scores were then sold to insurance companies, who used them to raise rates, deny coverage or cancel policies, according to the lawsuit. Nebraska drivers were never informed that their data was being collected or used against them. Among the key allegations: 'Nebraskans deserve to work with companies that are truthful and honest about what they are doing,' says Attorney General Hilgers. 'That is not what happened here, and we filed this lawsuit because one large company decided that it wouldn't honestly tell Nebraskans that their data was going to be used to impact their insurance rates. This is wrong. Our office will hold companies that mislead Nebraskans accountable, no matter how large.' You can read the full complaint below. When asked for comment on the lawsuit, a spokesperson for GM told Nexstar's KSNW, 'We remain committed to protecting consumers' privacy and will conduct a review of the complaint.' Nebraska is seeking civil penalties, restitution for affected Nebraskans, and an injunction to prevent GM and OnStar from continuing these practices in the state. GM is not the only company accused of misusing telematics programs. A 2024 investigation by the New York Times found instances of drivers who had not knowingly opted in to a telematics program being tracked. Data recorded without their consent was sold to third parties, sometimes resulting in a spike in insurance premiums, according to the Times.

Eisenhower Airport celebrates 10-year milestone

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Time flies. Wichita's Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport marked 10 years since the opening of its 'new' terminal on Wednesday with a celebration that looked back on a decade of growth—and ahead to what's next. The event, held in the terminal mezzanine, also included the unveiling of a bronze maquette of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a scaled version of the full statue that stands in the U.S. Capitol. 'Today we celebrate 10 years of the quote-unquote 'new terminal,'' Valerie Wise, the Air Service and Marketing Manager, said. 'Seems like it's still new, but 10 years old now—it's gone fast. We've seen a lot of progress in the last 10 years, with seven new nonstop destinations. We've had record traffic in 2024, so we've seen a lot of progress despite the many challenges we've had to deal with over the past decade.' Wise, who has been with the airport for 31 years, reflected on the terminal's opening as a career highlight. 'Definitely, the opening of the terminal was the biggest event,' she said. 'We had four grand opening events in nine days, so I'll never forget that. Whenever we add a new service, it's a big deal, and we always have a fun inaugural event—those I'll never forget.' Looking ahead, airport officials anticipate future growth to match rising demand. Wise noted several potential expansions, including additional ticketing areas, parking facilities, and possibly more nonstop flights. Sedgwick County Zoo welcomes third baby elephant 'Our parking might need additional areas, especially the garage. So, growing pains is basically what that is,' she said. 'I do expect us to add more nonstop destinations, which will be great for our region.' She added that new developments in Wichita—such as the proposed downtown biomedical campus—could help drive demand for more air service. 'The developments going on in downtown Wichita, like the biomedical facility, are going to be huge—a game changer for us,' Wise said. 'We need to talk to airlines about all the development projects going on, and those things should add more service to this region.' Wise said she's currently working on attracting new destinations that may take a few years to come to fruition, but she remains optimistic. 'I've enjoyed it very much,' she said. 'I'm working on destinations now that probably won't happen for maybe another two years, but that's OK.' For more Kansas news, click here.
