Eurocell (LON:ECEL) investors are sitting on a loss of 3.6% if they invested three years ago
In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But if you try your hand at stock picking, you risk returning less than the market. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Eurocell plc (LON:ECEL) shareholders, since the share price is down 18% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 25%.
It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Eurocell saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 19% per year, over the last three years. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 6% compound annual share price fall. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
We know that Eurocell has improved its bottom line lately, but is it going to grow revenue? If you're interested, you could check this free report showing consensus revenue forecasts.
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Eurocell's TSR for the last 3 years was -3.6%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
It's nice to see that Eurocell shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 22% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 3% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Eurocell you should know about.

Clean Energy Assets Face Coverage Risks, Zurich Insurance Says
Assets designed to help fight climate change may soon risk losing access to insurance unless they're adequately shielded from extreme weather events. Roughly 46% of Europe's total renewable generation capacity will be at 'critical risk' from the fallout of climate change unless owners do more to protect existing and planned assets, according to a report by Zurich Resilience Solutions, a unit of Zurich Insurance Group AG, and Mandala Partners. Energy storage and solar assets are particularly exposed, it said.

US Stocks Head Toward Record as Geopolitics Fail to Derail Rally
Equities are headed for a blue-sky scenario after the ceasefire in the Middle East drastically reduced the odds of a major disruption to energy prices. The risks facing the stock market are swiftly diminishing as economic growth remains solid despite the turmoil from tariffs and geopolitics. Equities have been remarkably resilient over the past two months as the S&P 500 bounced sharply from April lows, putting it 2% away from its record high.
