11 yrs since division, T & AP yet to agree on 9,000 cr liabilities
Hyderabad: Even 11 years after bifurcation, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are locked in a dispute over financial liabilities associated with loans taken for externally aided projects.
The erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh had secured nearly Rs 9,000 crore worth loans and external assistance, yet the division of the financial burden remains unresolved as both states struggle to reach a mutually agreeable solution.
Andhra Pradesh had accrued Rs 8,929 crore under 15 distinct foreign aid projects. In response to the ongoing dispute, the Union home ministry had convened a meeting two months ago and the department of economic affairs clarified that loans tied to projects situated in a particular region should be the responsibility of that state.
Furthermore, it was suggested that loans for projects benefiting both states should be apportioned according to the recommendations of the accountants general.
However, this approach has drawn fierce objections from Telangana's leadership. Many officials believe that constructive dialogue could alleviate a number of these challenges.
These loans are not all tied exclusively to projects within Andhra Pradesh.
Many are linked to initiatives in Telangana as well.
For instance, Andhra Pradesh contends that the division of loans for significant projects, such as the Krishnapatnam Super Critical power station located in Andhra Pradesh and the Hussainsagar development project in Telangana, should be determined based on territorial boundaries.
In stark contrast, Telangana advocates for loan division based on population ratio, as stipulated in Section 54(1) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. The officials from Telangana argue that this legislation prohibits a territorial basis for division and that loans were allocated without adequately addressing Telangana's perspectives.
Andhra Pradesh's position could impose an additional financial burden of approximately Rs 1,449.75 crore on Telangana, which is already grappling with substantial debts, raising alarm among state officials.

PM Modi to flag off Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat, inaugurate world's highest Chenab rail bridge
PM to inaugurate Chenab rail bridge NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the world's highest railway bridge, built over the Chenab River in Reasi district on June 6. Union minister Jitendra Singh confirmed this on Tuesday. Along with the bridge, the Prime Minister will also launch the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train service. In a post on X, Jitendra Singh wrote: "Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Chenab Bridge on 6th June... History in the making. Just 3 days to go! The mighty Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, stands tall in Jammu and Kashmir..." The Chenab railway bridge, now officially part of the Katra to Sangaldan rail section, stands as the world's highest railway arch bridge. This will be the first-ever train link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. The bridge towers 359 meters above the Chenab River, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower in height. For the first time, Kashmir will be directly linked to the rest of India via rail. This bridge is a key component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which spans 272 kilometers and includes 36 tunnels totaling 119 kilometers and nearly 1,000 bridges. The terrain's complexity and the region's seismic sensitivity posed major engineering challenges, but Indian engineers successfully executed this ambitious project, a feat many once deemed impossible. Railway officials highlighted the Chenab Bridge's structural strength, mentioning that it can withstand wind speeds over 250 km/h and was built using about 30,000 metric tons of steel. One foundation, known as S20, is so massive it covers nearly one-third of a football field, specifying the scale and vision behind the structure. The entire USBRL project represents not just engineering excellence but also New India's resolve and determination. With electric engines powered by specially designed overhead equipment (OHE) and advanced tunnel safety systems, the railway line is built for resilience and long-term service. The train service was earlier planned to begin on April 19 but was postponed after cancellation of PM Modi's visit due to bad weather. After the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, this railway project now holds even more importance than before. Gold price remains volatile amid geopolitical tensions. What should be your portfolio diversification strategy?
Gold rate today: Precious metal saw a marginal downward trend on Tuesday on Donald Trump's tariff tensions with China and the European Union, continued geopolitical instability from the Russia-Ukraine war, and investor caution ahead of the upcoming US Federal Reserve interest rate announcement. On Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), August gold futures declined by ₹ 308, or 0.31 per cent, to trade at ₹ 97,645 per 10 grams. Gold prices in the international market experienced a slight decline on Tuesday, pulling back from nearly a four-week high. As of 0249 GMT, spot gold slipped 0.3% to $3,369.98 per ounce, after earlier reaching its highest point since May 8. U.S. gold futures remained unchanged at $3,390. In the previous trading session, gold had surged around 2.7%, marking its strongest one-day increase in more than three weeks. Gold as an asset has been a good diversifier in any portfolio for decades, according to market experts. According to brokerage firm Angel One report, Gold demand and supply are inherent factors defining the volatility in the asset. The supply has been consistent around more than 4000 tons every year for more than the past decade. Jewellery contributes more than 50% of the overall demand for gold historically and this trend has been similar for more than a decade. Central banks have been increasing their interest in the yellow metal since the covid-19. Prathamesh Mallya, DVP- Research, Non-Agri Commodities and Currencies, Angel One, believes that the ongoing trend in gold prices will likely continue in 2025, boosting the yellow metal prices for the second half of 2025. Mallya further said that investors should wait for meaningful correction towards Rs.85000/10 gms for accumulation and recommends to allocate atleast 10 per cent of their portfolio allocation towards gold for better diversification. 'Gold prices have had a good run in the past one and half year as can be seen in the chart alongside. However, for investors with a long term perspective, they should accumulate on every dips taking benefit of value average for higher returns,' he said.
