Hollywood director James Foley dead after brain cancer battle
Hollywood director James Foley, who recently worked on the Fifty Shades Of Grey sequels, has died aged 71 after being diagnosed with brain cancer a year ago.
The American filmmaker, known for Glengarry Glen Ross, Fear, and The Corruptor, died peacefully in his sleep earlier this week, a statement from a representative confirmed.
His work spanned across music videos, television and film, making his directorial debut in 1984 with Reckless, starring American actor Aidan Quinn and Blade Runner's Daryl Hannah.
In 1986 he directed music videos for pop star Madonna, including for the hit songs Papa Don't Preach, Live To Tell and True Blue.
He more recently directed the two sequels to the Fifty Shades romantic thriller trilogy - Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (2018) - which starred Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, and also directed for television, including 12 episodes of the hit Netflix thriller series House Of Cards.
The filmmaker worked with Edward Burns, Dustin Hoffman and Rachel Weisz on the 2003 film Confidence, which follows Jake Vig, played by Burns, a grifter whose con plan to avenge his friend's murder goes awry, leaving him indebted to a mob boss and his enforcer.
He also directed the psychological thriller Perfect Stranger, starring Halle Berry as a journalist who goes undercover to investigate businessman Harrison Hill, played by Bruce Willis, who she suspects killed her childhood friend.
He is survived by his brother, Kevin Foley, sisters Eileen and Jo Ann Foley, and his nephew Quinn Foley and is also predeceased by his brother, Gerard Foley.

The counter also holds perfect rows of the signature 'Salty Boi' − salt bread, aka sogeum-ppang. It looks like a cross between a croissant and a dinner roll, made by baking a finger-sized log of salted butter into a coil of cold-fermented dough. The added butter creates a crispy base below the roll's crunchy exterior and soft filling. Pocked with several air holes, the Salty Boi accommodates a lavish spree of sweet and savoury fillings. The most luscious filling is potato, egg and mayo, followed by butter-glistening garlic cheese. A corn cheese version is swoony and plump and has a lovely pop of sweetness against the bread's saltiness. (That saltiness comes from the salted butter, by the way, not from extra sodium in the dough.) One of the most popular lunch items is the ham, tomato, lettuce and wasabi-mayo Salty Boi. Thanks to the seasoned bread, it's a va-va-voom improvement on the average meat and salad roll.

Atlantic Starr founding member Wayne Lewis dead aged 68
Wayne Lewis, founding member of the R B group Atlantic Starr, has died aged 68. The American singer and keyboardist was a pivotal force behind the group's success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which included chart-topping hits such as Always, Secret Lovers and Masterpiece, and died on Thursday (05.06.25), though news of his passing only came to light on Saturday (07.06.25.) His cause of death has not been disclosed. The news was announced on the band's official Facebook page, with a post saying: 'It's with great sadness we have to post the passing of Wayne Lewis on June 5, 2025. Please keep the family in your prayers and respect their privacy.' Tributes from fans flooded the page, describing Wayne as a 'legend' and the 'voice of a generation'. One wrote: 'RIP BROTHER… The voice of a generation!!!! My condolences to the family.' Another commented: 'Rest in Peace! Talented and Gorgeous.' Further tributes included: 'RIP thanks for the music,' and 'Thank you for the legacy condolences to the family and friends.' Wayne, who co-founded Atlantic Starr in New York, remained a core member of the group throughout decades of changes in its line-up. Alongside his brother Jonathan Lewis, also a founding member, Wayne helped shape the band's smooth blend of R and B, soul and pop. The group released their debut album in 1978 but found mainstream success nearly a decade later. Wayne's death comes just three months after the passing of another 1980s R ands B star, Stedman Pearson, frontman of British band Five Star. Stedman, who died aged 60 in March 2025, was known for his family group's slick performances and success with tracks such as Rain or Shine. He was described by family as an 'amazing son, brother and uncle' and 'a gentleman to the very end'.
