The hidden gem seaside town nestled in the UK with the ‘greatest' castle and puffins

It was actually crowned as one of the UK's best seaside towns in 2024 - but you've probably never heard of it IT'S A SECRET The hidden gem seaside town nestled in the UK with the 'greatest' castle and puffins Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IF you're contemplating a UK break over the summer holidays, there's a town that you may not have heard of which is perfect - and it's one of Europe's top 50 hidden gems. Beaumaris in Wales took the tenth spot on an expert list of discovered destinations in Europe, thanks to its long pier, pretty beach and there's even a nearby island which is home to colonies of puffins. The town is said to be ideal for "the explorer who's enchanted by rugged shorelines, medieval castles, and boat trips to wild islands". Beaumaris is a seaside town on the Isle of Anglesey, packed with charming pubs, cafes and beaches. Those looking for a more cultural break are also in luck, as it has a stunning castle dating back to the 13th century. It's known as the greatest ever built because it was the last of the royal strongholds created by Edward I in Wales – and perhaps his masterpiece. The castle is surrounded by a moat and has spellbinding views over Snowdonia, and tickets to look around it and the grounds are just £10.50 per adult. Beaumaris has a beach for those keen to get some steps in, but its not advisable for swimmers as it's near the Menai Straits - known for strong tidal currents. One visitor raved about the town on Tripadvisor: "Just beautiful! Love this place and would definitely recommend a visit for a relaxed atmosphere with stunning views." Near the beach is Beaumaris Pier, which originally opened in 1846 and rebuilt in 1872. These days it's a popular spot for crabbing and has a small kiosk near the entrance where you can nab an ice-cream or hot drink, plus souvenirs and beach toys. From Beaumaris you can easily get to Puffin Island, an uninhabited area off the eastern tip of Anglesey, on one of the regular boat trips or cruises. It's a wildlife hub for Atlantic grey seals as well as puffins - and if you're lucky you might also get a glimpse of porpoises and dolphins in the surrounding waters. Although most definitely a hidden gem, Beaumaris also has the backing of Which? - which put it high on a list of the best seaside towns in the UK last year. The Welsh town came in 25th place with a reader vote of 74 per cent. Plus, the seaside destination with famous Hollywood locals that was named one of the best places to live in the UK. And the Welsh seaside town named one of the cheapest places for a UK beach break – with hotels under £20 a night. What is a reasonable budget for a holiday? Expert explains

Based on a survey of 2,114 UK adults by Starling Bank, holiday spending has increased by a quarter (23%) since 2023. Brits are spending £822.50 more per week abroad than at home, compared to £668 two years ago. However, they are also taking a savvier approach to their holiday spending, with nearly eight in ten (78%) holidaymakers setting a budget ahead of their trip, compared to 66% of those surveyed by Starling in 2023. It's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to budgeting, and it will look different for every trip. Becca Stroud, Personal Finance Expert at Starling Bank, has shared a few tips for creating a reasonable holiday budget. What is a reasonable budget for a holiday, and how to create one? Think about the spending involved A good first step to creating a reasonable holiday budget is to make a list of all the things you need to account for when away and estimate how much it will all cost. Becca adds: "If your bank offers spending insights, you can try analysing your previous trip to see how much you typically spend on categories like drinks, groceries and experiences while away. "Once you know how much you'll need to roughly put aside, you can start saving up for your trip." Save up in advance, and separate out your savings Creating a dedicated savings fund can prevent you from accidentally spending money intended for your trip. Set a limit for how much you'd like to spend while you're away Planning what you'd like to do on your trip can be helpful in creating a rough daily spend target to stay within your holiday budget. Becca adds: "Some banks, like Starling, let you ringfence your funds into separate Spaces, so why not get creative with them? "You could create a Space for each day of your trip, or separate your Spaces for experiences, meals out and essentials." Keep track of your spending It's easy to lose track of your spending on holiday, particularly when you're having a nice time and you don't want to keep checking exchange rates. Becca explains: "It's worth having a daily check-in while on holiday to make sure you're aware of what you're spending. "To make this easier, you can turn on notifications for each time you make a purchase - this will give you a reality check and remind you to keep an eye on your budget." Don't tip your bank Transaction fees can be an issue when paying for items with your debit card, but some banks don't charge them. Becca says: "To avoid transaction fees make sure you click the option to pay in the local currency as opposed to in pounds. Recommended reading: "These small savings add up, giving you some extra cash to play with for guilt-free treats and activities." Consider a holiday spending buffer If you can, consider having a holiday spending buffer in place for any emergencies or unexpected expenses while away Becca explains: "Our research found that two-thirds of those surveyed created a buffer, setting aside a whopping £519.70 on average."

Family slam caravan park after being forced to leave during 'horrendous' stay

Nicola Jones and David Shirley checked in at the Lyons Robin Hood Holiday Park in Wales but were asked to leave early after experiencing several issues during their stay. A family in Wales have slammed a Welsh holiday park after they were forced to leave following an "awful" stay. ‌ Nicola Jones, her partner David Shirley, their three children, and other relatives arrived at the Lyons Robin Hood Holiday Park in Rhyl, Denbighshire, last Saturday. ‌ They had booked a £560 week -long stay and were due to check out today, but say they were told to leave early, which they did on Wednesday night. ‌ Among the issues they faced were finding toothpaste in the sink, urine in the toilet, a sewing needle in the carpet and no running water in the food kiosks. Nicola said she left a note for the cleaner to point out the issues in their caravan - but claimed her request was ignored. ‌ Nicola told the Mirror: "There was toothpaste in the sink, pee in the toilet and hair in the shower. I requested a cleaner to come and sort out the caravan. I left some notes to show the cleaner what was needed. But she didn't look at the notes. She hoovered the floor and left everything else. "I had to go to reception to complain but by then there were no cleaners left. I would have done it myself and requested some cleaning products as I was not going to buy them." Nicola said that in the end, a "lovely" lady arrived to solve the issues in the caravan. But the issues didn't end there, as there was no running water at two food kiosks - one selling ice cream and the other pizzas - on the site last Monday and Tuesday. ‌ Eventually Nicola said "sort kind of customer service manager" met her group to discuss about their problems - but claimed her group was eventually asked to leave. She said: "It's been horrendous. We were thrown off the site without a reason why. I was told if we left we would get a refund." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Due to their experience, Nicola said they will never return to the caravan park. A Lyons Holiday Parks spokesman told North Wales Live there were issues which were resolved: "We did have an issue with a burst main water pipe which did have to be repaired. We carried out the repair and operated in line with requirements. We did also have bottled water available for our guests. "This guest did report issues on Sunday to reception and was offered upgraded accommodation and many alternatives which were refused. Our housekeeping team resolved all issues with the accommodation that afternoon." The spokesman added: "Although we will not comment directly on the circumstances which prompted us to ask the guest to leave, a full refund will be issued and we have been in contact with the 3rd party operator today."
